The concept of sustainable production necessitates the utilization of waste and by-products as raw materials, the implementation of biotechnological processes, and the introduction of automated real-time monitoring for efficient use of resources. One example is the biocatalyzed conversion of the reusable by-product glycerin by acetic acid bacteria to dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is of great importance to the cosmetic industry. The application of compact spectrometers enables the rapid measurement of samples while simultaneously reducing the consumption of resources and energy.

Cardiovascular disease and cancer are the leading causes of death in the Western world. The associated risk factors are increased by smoking, hypertension, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, aging, unbalanced diet, and alcohol consumption. Therefore, the study of cellular metabolism has become of increasing importance, with current research focusing on the alterations and adjustments of the metabolism of cancer patients.

Background: Advanced swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) devices are the current gold standard for the measurement of ocular biometric and keratometric parameters, which are essential for the calculation and selection of intraocular lenses (IOLs). This study compares the agreement of two SS-OCT devices, the Eyestar 900 (Haag-Streit, Köniz, Switzerland) and the Anterion (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany).

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressing condition with a high mortality rate. The poor prognosis is often due to delayed diagnosis, which is typically made clinically or radiologically. This case report highlights a rare instance of fulminant NF with an atypical presentation-no initial clinical signs and an unusual radiological appearance.

Background: Older adults often face challenges in medication management due to multimorbidity and complex medication regimens, which frequently go unreported. Unrecognized problems, however, may lead to a loss of drug efficacy and harmful side effects. This study aimed to quantify the prevalence of such problems by applying a novel video-based assessment procedure in a sample of elderly patients.

MXenes are among the most diverse and prominent 2D materials. They are being explored in almost every field of science and technology, including biomedicine. In particular, they are being investigated for photothermal therapy, drug delivery, medical imaging, biosensing, tissue engineering, blood dialysis, and antibacterial coatings.

The treatment landscape for lymphoma and multiple myeloma, which disproportionally affect older adults, has been transformed by the advent of T cell-mediated immunotherapies, including immune checkpoint inhibition, T cell-engaging bispecific antibodies, and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy, during the last decade. These treatment modalities re-enable the patient's own immune system to combat malignant cells and offer the potential for sustained remissions and cure for various diseases.Age profoundly affects the physiological function of the immune system.

Aims: Conventional parameters of right ventricular (RV) function are load-dependent and therefore do not accurately reflect contractility in patients with relevant tricuspid regurgitation (TR). RV adaptability to load has been characterized using the Dandel's index in patients with heart failure, but its prognostic value in patients undergoing tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER) has not been investigated so far.
Methods And Results: From the EuroTR registry (2019 to 2022), patients with complete datasets and a minimum of 2-years of follow-up were included.

Herbicides are among the most commonly found contaminants in freshwater ecosystems. Standard tests are frequently employed to assess their ecotoxicological impacts, but sublethal endpoints in non-target species are often not considered. In addition, ecotoxicological investigations rarely take into account that many species from field populations are naturally infected with parasites.

Background: In the phase 3 SOLSTICE study (NCT02931539), maribavir was superior to investigator-assigned therapy (IAT) for confirmed cytomegalovirus viremia clearance at study week 8 in hematopoietic cell/solid organ transplant (HCT/SOT) recipients. We report additional efficacy and safety analyses from the SOT subgroup.
Methods: Eligible SOT recipients (n=211) received maribavir 400 mg twice daily (n=142) or IAT (n=69) for 8 weeks (12 weeks' follow-up).

Purpose: To investigate the predictive value of RECIST response within 3, 6, or 12 months on long-term survival, and explore differences between nivolumab+ipilimumab and nivolumab monotherapy, we analyzed pooled 5-year data of 935 responder and non-responder patients at various time points after treatment initiation in CheckMate 069, 066, and 067 studies.
Patients And Methods: Treatment-naive advanced melanoma patients received nivolumab+ipilimumab or nivolumab monotherapy. To decrease immortal time bias, 3-, 6-, or 12-month overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) landmark analyses were performed.

Background: Asymptomatic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation is often suspected in patients with cryptogenic stroke which constitute 20%-30% of ischemic strokes. Detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) and treatment with anticoagulation can reduce the risk of stroke. We sought to investigate the prevalence of asymptomatic atrial fibrillation (aAF) in patients with a history of stroke or an acute stroke on admission.

A certain proportion of patients undergoing cardiac surgery may experience bleeding complications that worsen outcomes. Numerous studies have investigated bleeding in cardiac surgery and some evaluate the role of hemostatic point-of-care tests in cardiac surgery patients. The prevalence of excessive bleeding varies in the literature, and such variability stems from the lack of a standardized definition of excessive bleeding.

Background: Inter-organizational partnerships and collaborations, used here interchangeably, have growing prominence across the health sector. Successful partnerships have received extensive study. However, especially for partnerships including nonprofit partners, limited attention has been given to negative factors that contribute to struggling partnerships, including failed partnerships, and/or impede potential partnerships, including unexplored and undeveloped potential partnerships.

Objective: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) has a high complications burden, with in-hospital mortality as the most devastating outcome. We aimed to develop and validate a risk score for early prediction of in-hospital mortality after aSAH.
Methods: Data from 2 university hospitals were pooled (n = 1070), with cohorts for score construction (n = 886) and external validation (n = 184).

Background: Pediatric organ transplantation is the primary treatment for end-organ failure. Improving medication adherence and healthcare compliance can decrease healthcare burdens, graft rejection, morbidity, and mortality. Adolescents commonly struggle with non-adherence, necessitating a smooth transition to adult care.

Lemierre Syndrome is a condition that appears to have been overlooked in recent decades in clinical practice, often resulting in death or long-lasting sequelae when left undetected and untreated. Typically, it occurs following an upper respiratory tract infection, often stemming from tonsillitis, leading to thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and subsequent multiple septic emboli. Here, we present a case a 46-year-old patient with the clinical presentation of pneumogenic sepsis.
