Collagen-based membrane is the most commonly used biomaterial for guided bone and tissue regeneration; however, its barrier function can be threatened by its rapid degradation pattern, affecting the success of the regeneration process. Differences in the origin and functionalization of the membrane to obtain better properties can alter the degradation rate. The objective of this study was to examine the biodegradation pattern of two commercially available collagen membranes (Jason and Collprotect) manufactured using porcine pericardium or dermis, doped or not with zinc-ions or doxycycline, in a period up to 21 days.

Dental disease remains the most common non-communicable disease worldwide. It predisposes patients to significant morbidities following bone modifying agents or radiation therapy to the head and neck. Preventative dental regimes effectively reduce the risk of both medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in these patients.

How we manage medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Eur J Med Res

August 2024

Cork University Dental School and Hospital, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland.

Bone-modifying agents (BMAs) are integral to managing patients with advanced cancer. They improve quality of survival by reducing skeletal-related events, treating hypercalcaemia and chemotherapy-induced bone loss (Coleman in Clin Cancer Res 12: 6243s-6249s, 2006), (Coleman in Ann Oncol 31: 1650-1663, 2020). Two decades ago, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) was first reported following BMA therapy (Marx in J Oral Maxillofac Surg 61: 1115-1117, 2003).

Article Synopsis
  • This report discusses the replacement of fixed implant-supported prostheses (FIP) with implant overdentures (IOD) in an older Parkinson's disease patient to enhance oral hygiene and manage mucosal health.
  • The patient struggled with various health issues, including hospitalization for cholecystitis and aspiration pneumonia, which complicated ongoing dental care and maintenance of the IOD.
  • Despite efforts to manage the patient's condition and provide regular oral cleaning, complications like mucosal ulcers and peri-implantitis persisted, ultimately leading to inadequate care and hospital readmission.

Innate and adaptive immune responses at mucosal surfaces play a role in protection against most infectious diseases. However, the relative importance either of mucosal versus systemic, or of cellular versus humoral immunity in protection against such infections remains unclear. We aimed to determine the relative percentages and reproducibility of detection of five major T lymphocyte phenotypes in stimulated whole mouth fluid (SWMF); to compare matched mucosal and blood phenotypes; to evaluate the consistency of phenotypes in SWMF over time; and to determine any associations with age or gender.

Background: Carbonic anhydrase VI (CA VI) is crucial in regulating oral pH and predicting susceptibility to dental caries. The hypothesis posits that caries activity may alter the CA VI function, diminishing its capacity to regulate pH effectively and potentially exacerbating cariogenic challenges. This 1-year cohort study sought to investigate the enzymatic activity of salivary CA VI and buffering capacity following a 20% sucrose rinse in 4 to 6.

Could retaining the dental recall interval save NHS dentistry?

Br Dent J

April 2024

Dean of Dentistry, Dundee University Dental School, Park Place, Dundee, DD1 4HR, Scotland, UK.

The World Health Assembly in May 2021 was a watershed moment in oral health, with the landmark resolution that designated oral diseases as non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This was strongly supported by a host of other NCDs in recognition of the common risk factor principle and acknowledgement of the fact that oral diseases do not occur in isolation from other NCDs, but are commonly associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes/obesity, respiratory diseases, metabolic syndrome, a range of other inflammatory disorders and cancers. Regular monitoring and early detection would potentially intercept these NCDs and this could form a central plank of a revamped holistic 'health'- as opposed to 'disease'-oriented health care system.
