Molecular adsorption to the nanoparticle surface may switch the colloidal interactions from repulsive to attractive and promote nanoparticle agglomeration. If the nanoparticles are magnetic, then their agglomerates exhibit a much stronger response to external magnetic fields than individual nanoparticles. Coupling between adsorption, agglomeration, and magnetism allows a synergy between the high specific area of nanoparticles (∼100 m/g) and their easy guidance or separation by magnetic fields.

Department of Radiation Therapy, Antoine Lacassagne Cancer Center and University of Nice-Sophia, University Cote d'Azur, Nice, France.

The origin of penile metastases is in 70% of cases from primary pelvic cancers (genitourinary and recto-sigmoid primary tumors). The prognosis is poor and it is often associated with synchronous bone metastases at the time of diagnosis. We present the case of a 61-year-old patient who developed a penile induration 7 years after radical prostatectomy followed by adjuvant external beam radiation therapy for high-risk prostatic adenocarcinoma.

Background: Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) is difficult to treat with 5-year survival rate of 10% in metastatic patients. Main reasons of therapy failure are lack of validated biomarkers and scarce knowledge of the biological processes occurring during RCC progression. Thus, the investigation of mechanisms regulating RCC progression is fundamental to improve RCC therapy.

Centre de Recherche en Cancérologie de Marseille (CRCM), INSERM U1068, CNRS UMR 7258, Aix-Marseille Université and Institut Paoli-Calmettes; Parc Scientifique et Technologique de Luminy, 163 Avenue de Luminy, 13288, Marseille, France.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent cell death characterized by the accumulation of hydroperoxided phospholipids. Here, we report that the NUPR1 inhibitor ZZW-115 induces ROS accumulation followed by a ferroptotic cell death, which could be prevented by ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) and ROS-scavenging agents. The ferroptotic activity can be improved by inhibiting antioxidant factors in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC)- and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-derived cells.

Using Theories of Behavior Change to Develop Interventions for Healthy Aging.

J Gerontol B Psychol Sci Soc Sci

September 2021

Department of Psychology and Human Movement Science, University of Hamburg, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • To stay healthy as we grow older, people need to make and keep good habits throughout their life.
  • Understanding what motivates people to change their behavior is important for helping them age well.
  • This overview talks about different psychological theories that can help create effective strategies (like planning and nudging) to help people maintain healthy habits as they get older.

This article discusses ways in which aging individuals respond to physical, social, and environmental changes and constraints by modifying their goals. We review aging-related trends, which we derive from several theoretical approaches, including goal systems theory, the motivational theory of life-span development and its action-phase model, and the Selection, Optimization, and Compensation model. These theories explain how biological and social role changes in later adulthood prompt individuals to make changes to the content, orientation, and composition of their goals, including disengaging from and adjusting previously central goals.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study involving high-coverage whole-genome sequencing of 232 lung cancer cases in never smokers (LCINS) identified three distinct subtypes based on genetic alterations, primarily involving copy number changes.
  • - The dominant subtype, termed "piano," is characterized by unique genetic features like UBA1 mutations and low mutational burden, indicating stem cell-like traits and a slower tumor growth rate compared to typical lung cancer in smokers.
  • - Notably, no significant tobacco-related mutations were found, even in patients exposed to secondhand smoke, and certain genetic changes were linked to increased mortality, suggesting potential for tailored treatment strategies for LCINS.

Pathogenic variants cause a rare autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder referred to as the Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf Optic Atrophy Syndrome. Although visual loss is a prominent feature seen in affected individuals, the molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to visual impairment are still poorly characterized. We conducted a deep phenotyping study on a cohort of 22 individuals carrying pathogenic variants to document the neurodevelopmental and ophthalmological manifestations, in particular the structural and functional changes within the retina and the optic nerve, which have not been detailed previously.

Non-ideal behaviour of mixed ions is disclosed in skin absorption experiments of mixed halide anions in excised pig skin. Comparison of skin absorption of pure and mixed ions shows enhanced penetration of chaotropic ions from mixed solutions. An experimental design and statistical analysis using a Scheffé {3,2} simplex-lattice allows investigating the full ternary diagram of anion mixtures of fluoride, bromide and iodide.

The coronavirus pandemic, which appeared in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, rapidly spread all over the world in only a few weeks. Faster testing techniques requiring less resources are key in managing the pandemic, either to enable larger scale testing or even just provide developing countries with limited resources, particularly in Africa, means to perform tests to manage the crisis. Here, we report an unprecedented, rapid, reagent-free and easy-to-use screening spectroscopic method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 on RNA extracts.
