Background: Understanding the genetic underpinnings of Alzheimer's disease is crucial for advancing research and developing targeted interventions. Genomic research in dementia in Africa is of utmost importance based on recent reports from studies in African Americans that African ancestral gene is associated with lower risk effect for developing AD. However, dementia related genetic study is an evolving research in sub-Saharan Africa with peculiar challenges influencing participant recruitment.

Public Health.

Background: Hand-grip strength (HGS) is known to be a surrogate marker of not only fitness and frailty, but of cognitive and cardiometabolic health. It is cheap, readily deployed and can be a valuable tool in resource-limited settings. Little however is known about the determinants and correlates of HGS in sub-Saharan Africa, where stroke and vascular cognitive disorders are projected to exponentially increase.

Background: By 2050, the prevalence of dementia is projected to triple with the greatest increases anticipated in Africa and Asia - largely attributable to population growth and cardiometabolic disorder. Hand-grip strength (HGS) is a known predictor of cardiometabolic and cognitive health. The relationship between HGS and cognitive impairment (CI) among elderly West Africans is not known.

The prevalent misconception of dementia as a result of witchcraft or wizardry is a challenge, and the media acts as a key agent in dispelling such myths. By reaching divers audiences, the media reinforces the notion that dementia is not confined to Africa alone but it is a global concern.

Dementia Care Research and Psychosocial Factors.

Background: Limited knowledge exists about the cultural approaches to managing the psychological and behavioral outcomes (PBO) of Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementia (AD/ADRD) in Africa. Specifically, to develop a culture-sensitive training framework for AD/ADRD caregivers, we explored AD/ADRD caregivers' cultural embeddedness in managing people living with AD/ADRD (PLWAD/ADRD) in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Method: Using hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative research design, we interviewed 23 caregivers providing care to PLWAD/ADRD in Ibadan, a Yoruba-speaking ethnic group of Nigeria.

Background: Historically, efforts to engage under-represented communities in health research have encountered limited success, attributable to inadequate community participation, acceptability, and ownership. Globally, an innovative strategy to foster community involvement in research is the establishment of Community Advisory Boards (CABs). These boards consist of stakeholders from the target community, providing partnership and support throughout all phases of the research, from conception to implementation and evaluation.

Most cognitive assessment batteries for Alzheimer's Disease(AD), are developed in high income countries (HICs), where most international dementia collaborations and data originate. The African Dementia Consortium (AfDC) is a new scientific collaboration network currently participating in the Recruitment and Retention for Alzheimer's Disease Diversity Genetic Cohorts in the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project (READD-ADSP).

Attitudes toward scale-up of an Intensive Combination Approach to Rollback the Epidemic in Nigerian adolescents (iCARE) intervention for youth in Nigeria: results of a mixed methods early-implementation study.

Background: Youth living with HIV (YLH) are disproportionately impacted by HIV with poor outcomes along the entire HIV care continuum. In a 2020-2022 pilot study, iCARE Nigeria, successfully tested a combination intervention incorporating mobile health technology and peer navigation to: 1) improve testing and linkage to HIV care for young men, especially young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and 2) improve medication adherence and treatment outcomes for YLH. The intervention was scaled up to 5 sites in 3 Nigerian cities.

Measurable residual disease and posttransplantation gilteritinib maintenance for patients with FLT3-ITD-mutated AML.

BMT CTN 1506 ("MORPHO"; NCT02997202) was a randomized phase 3 study of gilteritinib compared to placebo as maintenance therapy after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) for patients with FLT3-ITD-mutated acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A key secondary endpoint was to determine the impact on survival of pre- and/or post-HCT measurable residual disease (MRD), as determined using a highly sensitive assay for FLT3-ITD mutations. Generally, gilteritinib maintenance therapy was associated with improved relapse-free survival (RFS) for participants with detectable peri-HCT MRD, whereas no benefit was evident for those lacking detectable MRD.

Designing a prototype trauma registry framework for a tertiary health institution in a low- and middle-income country: A qualitative study.

Introduction: Low- and middle-income countries experience high injury-related mortality rates, with road traffic crashes being a significant contributor in Nigeria. Data from trauma registries are crucial for designing and advocating for trauma intervention programmes. However, there is limited research to inform the development of trauma registries in a Nigerian setting.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of an Angiotensin Receptor-Neprilysin Inhibitor in Patients Using a Durable Left Ventricular Assist Device.

Sacubitril/valsartan is an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) drug used to treat patients with heart failure and has shown improvement in outcomes. Different studies reported the use of an ARNI in patients using left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). However, there are limited data on the use of ARNIs in this population.

Performance validity tests in people with epilepsy: A review of the literature.

Objective: Professional bodies recommend the use of performance validity tests (PVTs) to aid the interpretation of scores obtained in neuropsychological assessments, but base rates of failure differ according to neurological diagnosis and the associated impairments. This review summarises the PVT literature in people with epilepsy with the aim of establishing base rates of PVT failure and the factors associated with PVT performance in this population.

Methods: Ovid and PubMed databases were searched for studies reporting PVT test performance in people with epilepsy.

Transplant-Free Approach in Relapsed Hodgkin Lymphoma in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults: A Nonrandomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Retrieval strategies for children, adolescents, and young adults with relapsed classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) aim to maintain efficacy while minimizing long-term toxic effects. Children, adolescents, and young adults with low-risk, relapsed cHL may benefit from replacing high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant with less intensive involved-site radiotherapy (ISRT).

Objective: To evaluate a risk-stratified, response-adapted, transplant-free approach for treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults with low-risk relapsed cHL with nivolumab plus brentuximab vedotin (BV) followed by BV plus bendamustine for patients with suboptimal response and ISRT (30.

Transplant and Nontransplant Salvage Therapy in Pediatric Relapsed or Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma: The EuroNet-PHL-R1 Phase 3 Nonrandomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: The current standard-of-care salvage therapy in relapsed/refractory classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) includes consolidation high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT)/autologous stem cell transplant (aSCT).

Objective: To investigate whether presalvage risk factors and fludeoxyglucose-18 (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) response to reinduction chemotherapy can guide escalation or de-escalation between HDCT/aSCT or transplant-free consolidation with radiotherapy to minimize toxic effects while maintaining high cure rates.

Atypical Variants of Spinal Dysraphism: A Case Series.

The aim of this study is to present and discuss atypical instances of spina bifida (SB) within a Nigerian paediatric cohort, highlighting their distinctive clinicoradiological features. Additionally, a brief literature review is provided to contextualise these congenital anomalies. This series comprises eight rare cases of SB managed in a Nigerian neurosurgical facility.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus. It is transmitted through sexual intercourse, shared intravenous drugs, contaminated needle use, blood transfusion, and mother-to-child transmission. Of the patients with HIV, 50%-75% have ocular manifestations and this may be the primary presentation.

Wound-related Pain and Quality of Life in Patients with Chronic Wounds in a Metropolitan City in Nigeria: An Analytic Cross-sectional Study.

Background: The prevalence of chronic wounds is expected to rise with the increasing elderly population in the society. This rise in prevalence of chronic wounds comes with its consequences such as wound pain and interference with activities of daily living. There's a paucity of data on the impact of chronic wounds in our clime.

Repair of Cleft Palate in Adult Patients; Impact of Speech Therapy Following Surgical Intervention in Africa.

Cleft lip and palate anomalies constitute both aesthetic and functional impairments for affected individuals. While an individual with an unrepaired cleft palate may adjust somewhat to the associated feeding challenges as he or she gets older, the consequent speech impairment is amenable primarily to surgery. It is pertinent to assess how well speech function is restored in individuals with cleft after surgical repairs.

Empowering professionals: a multidisciplinary approach to supporting people seeking asylum and refugees.

People seeking asylum and refugees living in initial accommodation in the UK can experience significant barriers to accessing care. They often have complex health and social needs and may experience fragmentation in the delivery of services. The Respond Integrated Refugee Health Service, hosted by University College London Hospital and operating across North Central London, has been created to address some of these challenges.
