Perineal Diagnostic Microbial Swabs As A Predictive Parameter In Pediatric Burn Injury.

Ann Burns Fire Disasters

September 2020

Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Darmstadt-Dieburg Clinics, Germany.

The aim is to evaluate the predictive usefulness of perineal diagnostic microbial swabs (PDMS) which will identify an enteric reservoir as possible source of concomitant wound infection following scald burn injury in infants. Perineal swabs were taken on admission of infants presenting with scald burn injury along with a standardized protocol of initial sterile surgical field cleansing and dressing. Complicated (CC) and uncomplicated (UC) clinical cases were discriminated based on parameters of significant microbial burn wound colonization, such as onset of fever, white blood cell count (WCC), C-reactive protein (CRP) and a concomitant need for surgical wound revision with/without guided antibiotic therapy.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess proper indications a nonsurgical treatment regime for pediatric fractures of the proximal phalanx based on principles of early functional treatment.

Methods: A case series (evidence level 4) of 30 pediatric patients with fractures of the proximal phalanx were treated nonsurgically using protective dynamic splinting techniques and fiberglass casting material. Assessments were performed clinically and by x-ray within 4 to 8 weeks of commencement of treatment.

Objective: Although admissions of children with anorexia nervosa (AN) are increasing, there remains a dearth of up-to-date knowledge of the course and outcome of early-onset AN. The aim of the present study was to investigate the outcomes of patients with AN onset before the age of 14.

Method: Sixty-eight consecutive former patients who met the DSM-IV criteria for AN and who had been treated at one of three German university hospitals were asked to participate in a follow-up study.

Extensive burn injury caused by fundamental electronic cigarette design flaw.

Ann Burns Fire Disasters

September 2016

Department of Plastic and Hand Surgery - Burn Centre, University Clinics RWTH Aachen, Germany.

Currently, electronic cigarette (EC) devices are widely used as an alternative to conventional smoking. The underlying technical principle is an electric coil-based vaporizer unit, which vaporizes various solutions for inhalation purposes with a rechargeable lithium battery unit as power source. We report a case of extensive burn injury resulting from the thermal explosion of a battery unit within an EC device.

Objective: High levels of expressed emotions (EE) and depressive symptoms (DS) are often found in caregivers of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). Both parameters are considered to influence AN symptoms of the patient.

Methods: One hundred seventy adolescent women with AN and their caregivers were assessed at admission, discharge, at 1-year and 2.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex and heritable eating disorder characterized by dangerously low body weight. Neither candidate gene studies nor an initial genome-wide association study (GWAS) have yielded significant and replicated results. We performed a GWAS in 2907 cases with AN from 14 countries (15 sites) and 14 860 ancestrally matched controls as part of the Genetic Consortium for AN (GCAN) and the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium 3 (WTCCC3).

Schmieder and colleagues introduced a new molecular magnetic resonance (MR) probe with a promising lipophilic gadolinium chelate complex that provides high relaxivity. Results of in vivo experiments clearly demonstrate the excellence of the probe for longitudinally monitoring α(v)β(3) integrin expression in tumors. In addition, the authors have developed a robust nonrelaxometric analysis method with which to quantify the spatial distribution of molecular MR probes.

Body mass index in adolescent anorexia nervosa patients in relation to age, time point and site of admission.

Eur Child Adolesc Psychiatry

July 2013

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy, University Clinics RWTH Aachen, Aachen, Germany.

Body mass index (BMI) at admission is an important predictor of outcome in adolescent eating disorders. However, few studies have investigated BMI at admission, its changes in recent years, or modifying factors, such as duration of illness and age at onset in different geographical regions. Thus, this study aimed to investigate changes in BMI at admission over the past decade in one clinic, the differences in BMI between various treatment sites and the influence of duration of illness before admission and age at admission.
