Neurobiology Laboratory for Brain Aging and Mental Health, Psychiatric University Clinics Basel, Basel, Switzerland.

We present a narrative review of clinical trials investigating the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of silexan, an active substance derived from lavender oil and summarize nonclinical findings from pharmacological studies supporting its therapeutic use. Six studies investigated the efficacy of the lavender oil in patients with subthreshold and generalized anxiety disorders as well as in mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (MADD). Furthermore, we present data indicating that silexan may influence sleep quality as well as anxiety or depressive disorders in individuals with post-COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to explore the connection between exercise addiction (EA) and mental disorders, specifically depression and ADHD, as there are no official diagnostic criteria for EA yet.
  • Researchers surveyed 173 participants who exercised over 10 hours a week, assessing their mental health through various questionnaires while controlling for factors like age and gender.
  • Results indicated that depressive symptoms had a stronger correlation and predictive power for exercise addiction than ADHD symptoms, suggesting that those with depression might be at a higher risk for EA compared to those with ADHD.

Introduction: The first-line treatment for opioid dependence is opioid agonist treatment (OAT) with oral opioids. However, in some cases, treatment with intravenous diacetylmorphine (IV-DAM) is indicated. Research on neurocognitive impairments and treatment effects of OAT - particularly with IV-DAM - on neurocognitive functioning, is scarce.

Child and Adolescent Research Department, University Psychiatric Clinics Basel (UPK), University of Basel, Wilhelm Klein-Strasse 27, 4002, Basel, Switzerland.

Children in institutional care have a high risk to experience childhood adversities (CAs), with consequences for physical and mental well-being. The long-term effects of CAs on the brain, including consequences for neuronal plasticity and sleep, are poorly understood. This study examined the interplay between stress (including CAs), sleep, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a prominent marker for neuronal plasticity.

The International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 11th Revision introduced a fully dimensional approach to personality disorders which conceptionally converges with the long-standing psychodynamic understanding of psychopathology through underlying intra- and interpersonal impairments. In this study, the diagnostic contributions of the two psychodynamic concepts of personality structure and psychodynamic conflicts were investigated through the comparison of self-report data of 189 adolescents with mental health problems and 321 mentally healthy controls. The study results reveal that adolescents with mental health problems show significantly higher impairments in all four domains of personality structure and significantly higher levels of several psychodynamic conflicts.

: Now more than ever, there is an obvious need to reduce the overall burden of disease and risk of premature mortality that are associated with mental health and substance use disorders among young people. However, the current state of research and evidence-based clinical care for high-risk substance use among youth is fragmented and scarce. The objective of the study is to establish consensus for the prevention, treatment, and management of high-risk substance use and overdose among youth (10 to 24 years old).

Psychiatric University Clinics Basel, University of Basel, Wilhelm Klein-Strasse 27, 4002 Basel, Switzerland; Department for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, Psychiatric Hospital, University of Zurich, Lenggstrasse 3, 8008 Zurich, Switzerland.

Heroin-assisted treatment comprises the use of diacetylmorphine (pharmaceutical heroin) for individuals with severe opioid use disorder. In Switzerland, take-home doses in heroin-assisted treatment are more strictly regulated as compared to conventional opioid agonist treatment. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swiss Federal Council provisionally adapted its policy, allowing for longer prescriptions of take-home diacetylmorphine.

Informal coercion during childbirth: risk factors and prevalence estimates from a nationwide survey of women in Switzerland.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

May 2021

Department of Health Professions, Applied Research & Development in Midwifery, Bern University of Applied Sciences, Murtenstrasse 10, 3008, Bern, Switzerland.

Background: In many countries, the increase in facility births is accompanied by a high rate of obstetric interventions. Lower birthrates or elevated risk factors such as women's higher age at childbirth and an increased need for control and security cannot entirely explain this rise in obstetric interventions. Another possible factor is that women are coerced to agree to interventions, but the prevalence of coercive interventions in Switzerland is unknown.

February 2022

Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine, University of Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: In recent years, some have suggested that palliative care approaches be considered for patients diagnosed with severe, persistent mental illness. Palliative care aims to decrease the suffering related to illness rather than focusing on curing the illness. Palliative care approaches for patients diagnosed with severe, persistent mental illness are controversial: Some argue palliative care would improve quality of life while others argue it would negatively affect patients' well-being.

October 2020

Neurobiology Lab for Brain Aging and Mental Health, Molecular & Cognitive Neuroscience, Transfaculty Research Platform, University of Basel, 4002 Basel, Switzerland.

Neurosteroids are steroids synthetized in the nervous system, with the first step of steroidogenesis taking place within mitochondria with the synthesis of pregnenolone. They exert important brain-specific functions by playing a role in neurotransmission, learning and memory processes, and neuroprotection. Here, we show for the first time that mitochondrial neurosteroidogenesis follows a circadian rhythm and correlates with the rhythmic changes in mitochondrial morphology.

September 2020

Neurobiology Lab for Brain Aging and Mental Health, Transfaculty Research Platform, Molecular & Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Basel, 4002 Basel, Switzerland.

Recently, nutritional interventions have received attention as promising approaches to promote human health during a lifespan. The Mediterranean and Okinawan diets have been associated with longevity and decreasing risk for age-related diseases in contrast to the Western diet. The effect might be due to several antioxidative bioactive compounds highly consumed in both diets, namely, resveratrol, hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, curcumin, and spermidine.
