Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder whose clinical presentation consists of motor and non-motor signs and symptoms. Among the non-motor symptoms, psychosis can occur in the later stages of the disease. Psychosis in PD (PDP) is a common, complex, and significantly disabling disorder associated with poorer quality of life, accelerated cognitive decline, need for hospitalization or institutionalization, and mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the characteristics and dermatoscopic features of cutaneous metastases (CMs) from various primary tumors, highlighting the challenge of diagnosing them.
  • A total of 583 patients were analyzed, with melanomas being the most common primary tumors, and a significant portion of the metastases was found in the head and neck region.
  • The findings suggest that pigmented melanoma metastases often appear as structureless blue lesions, while amelanotic metastases display linear serpentine vessels; both types can be confused with other skin lesions.

Objectives: Advanced age is a well-established risk factor for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Exacerbated inflammation affects multiple organs, among which hematopoiesis responds by increased output of various cells. We aimed to determine the association between COVID-19 progression and large immature cell (LIC) counts, changes in erythrocyte and platelet distribution widths (RDW, PDW) with reference to patients' age.

: It is well known that alterations in microvascular structure and function contribute to the development of ocular, renal, and cardiovascular diseases. Accordingly, the presence of fundus vascular changes in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) may provide information of prognostic value regarding the progression of renal disease. This study aimed to examine the associations between clinical characteristics and retinal optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) parameters in patients with BEN and compare them with those in CKD.

Introduction: Differences in pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and natural course of ST-elevation myocardial infarction in female patients due to either spontaneous dissection (SCAD-STEMI) or atherothrombotic occlusion (type 1 STEMI) have been discussed. Current knowledge on differences in left ventricular myocardial function and infarct size is limited. The aim of this study was to assess baseline clinical characteristics, imaging findings, and therapeutic approach and to compare differences in echocardiographic findings at baseline and 3-month follow-up in patients with SCAD-STEMI and type 1 STEMI.

Monitoring patients with spontaneous coronary dissection (SCAD) is critical in their care, as there are no accepted recommendations. To this end, finding clinical or imaging predictors of recurrent events in these patients is essential for predicting adverse events and guiding treatment decisions between conservative medical therapy and percutaneous coronary intervention. Myocardial injury and left ventricular function after SCAD can be variable parameters that require monitoring.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) accounts for 1.7%-4% of all acute coronary syndrome presentations, particularly among young women with an emerging awareness of its importance. The demarcation of acute SCAD from coronary atherothrombosis and the proper therapeutic approach still represents a major clinical challenge.

Innate and adaptive immune responses exert their role in CIDP pathogenesis through cytokine production. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may alter cytokine gene expression, with a potential influence on the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. However, cytokine gene SNPs have not been assessed in CIDP patients yet.

Purpose: Unpredictable drug efficacy and safety of combined antiepileptic therapy is a major challenge during pharmacotherapy decisions in everyday clinical practice. The aim of this study was to describe the pharmacokinetics of valproic acid (VA), lamotrigine (LTG), and levetiracetam (LEV) in a pediatric population using nonlinear mixed-effect modeling, while machine learning (ML) algorithms were applied to identify any relationships among the plasma levels of the three medications and patients' characteristics, as well as to develop a predictive model for epileptic seizures.

Methods: The study included 71 pediatric patients of both genders, aged 2-18 years, on combined antiepileptic therapy.

Vitamin C and epigenetics: A short physiological overview.

Open Med (Wars)

June 2023

Clinic for Cardiosurgery, Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive care, University Clinical center of Nis, 18000 Nis, Serbia.

In recent years, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) has acquired great interest due to its multiple functions, which results in homeostasis of normal tissues and organs. On the other hand, it has been shown that epigenetic modifications may have an important role in various diseases and therefore are a focus of the extraordinary investigation. Ascorbic acid serves as a cofactor for ten-eleven translocation dioxygenases, which are responsible for deoxyribonucleic acid methylation.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) profoundly affects the immune and hematopoietic systems with various degrees of reactive changes in the blood cell counts. Immuno-inflammatory indices are considered a simple and effective tool in the prediction of COVID-19 outcomes. We aimed to evaluate and compare the usefulness of leukocyte and platelet counts-based immuno-inflammatory indices on admission to hospital in predicting COVID-19 progression and mortality.

Background And Aims: Fatigue is a common but poorly understood complaint in patients with immune-mediated polyneuropathies. We sought to evaluate changes in fatigue over 1 year in a cohort of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) patients and to correlate changes in fatigue with changes in disability and quality of life. Investigation into other factors that may contribute to fatigue with a particular interest in the role other chronic disease states may play was also performed.
