Bosn J Basic Med Sci

February 2021

Multidisciplinary Epidemiology and Translational Research in Intensive Care, Emergency and Perioperative Medicine (METRIC), Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA; Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA.

In many areas of the world, critical care providers caring for COVID-19 patients lacked specific knowledge and were exposed to the abundance of new and unfiltered information. With support from the World Health Organization, we created a multimodal tele-education intervention to rapidly share critical care knowledge related to COVID-19 targeting providers in a region of Southeastern Europe. We delivered 60-minute weekly interactive tele-education sessions over YouTubeTM between March 2020 and May 2020, supplemented by a dedicated webpage.

Incremental prognostic value of a novel metabolite-based biomarker score in congestive heart failure patients.

ESC Heart Fail

October 2020

Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Berlin, Germany.

Aims: The Cardiac Lipid Panel (CLP) is a newly discovered panel of metabolite-based biomarkers that has shown to improve the diagnostic value of N terminal pro B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). However, little is known about its usefulness in predicting outcomes. In this study, we developed a risk score for 4-year cardiovascular death in elderly chronic heart failure (CHF) patients using the CLP.

Overactivation of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is one of the main pathophysiological features in the evolution of chronic heart failure (CHF). The (pro)renin receptor ((P)RR) represents an important player in a tissue renin-angiotensin system (tissue RAS), which mediates tissue injury through fibrosis and hypertrophy of the affected organs in CHF patients. In our study we used plasma samples from 556 elderly subjects with CHF and 198 healthy participants in order to evaluate prognostic and diagnostic potential of s(P)RR in setting of CHF.

Importance: While many features of stable ischemic heart disease vary by sex, differences in ischemia, coronary anatomy, and symptoms by sex have not been investigated among patients with moderate or severe ischemia. The enrolled ISCHEMIA trial cohort that underwent coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) was required to have obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) for randomization.

Objective: To describe sex differences in stress testing, CCTA findings, and symptoms in ISCHEMIA trial participants.

Myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) is a recently described, clinically significant entity, with prevalence rates ranging from 1% to 14% and a mean of 6% of all patients with myocardial infarction. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS; Hughes syndrome) is characterized by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies associated with thrombosis (arterial and/or venous) and/or pregnancy morbidity and could be the cause of MINOCA. Data on genetic predisposition to APS are scarce.

Background: The addition of atezolizumab to carboplatin and etoposide (CP/ET) significantly improved progression-free and overall survival for patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) in the IMpower133 study (NCT02763579). We have evaluated adverse events (AEs) and patient-reported outcomes in IMpower133 to assess the benefit-risk profile of this regimen.

Patients And Methods: Patients received four 21-day cycles of CP/ET plus intravenous atezolizumab 1200 mg or placebo (induction phase), followed by atezolizumab or placebo (maintenance phase) until progression or loss of benefit.

Potential drug-drug interactions associated with clinical and laboratory findings at hospital admission.

Int J Clin Pharm

February 2020

Department of Pharmacokinetics and Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Belgrade, Vojvode Stepe 450, 11000, Belgrade, Serbia.

Background Drug-drug interactions represent one of the causes of adverse therapy outcomes through deteriorated efficacy or safety. However, the true extent of harm related to drug-drug interactions is not well established due to a lack of recognition and understanding. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the association of potential drug-drug interactions with patients variables recorded at admission.

Heart failure negatively impacts quality of life (QoL), which in turn contributes to an adverse long-term prognosis. We aimed at identifying biomarker trajectories after an episode of acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF) that differ between patients showing average versus impaired QoL 1 year later, thus allowing to predict impaired QoL. Biomarkers were repeatedly measured throughout the year in 104 ADHF patients.
