Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the dysregulated and overwhelming response to infection, accompanied by an exaggerated pro-inflammatory state and lipid metabolism disturbance leading to sequential organ failure. Meldonium is an anti-ischemic and anti-inflammatory agent which negatively interferes with lipid metabolism by shifting energy production from fatty acid oxidation to glycolysis, as a less oxygen-demanding pathway. Thus, we investigated the effects of a four-week meldonium pre-treatment on faecal-induced sepsis in Sprague-Dawley male rats.

The hypoestrogenic period after menopause and associated metabolic imbalance might facilitate the onset of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its progression. The prevalence of NAFLD increases in patients experiencing premature ovarian insufficiency, as well as surgical or natural menopause. The postmenopausal period is characterized by dyslipidemia and insulin resistance associated with an increased influx of free fatty acids to the liver with consequent steatosis and further progression of NAFLD.

Beta blockers (BBs) have important side effects that contribute to low adherence and persistence. Therefore, the optimal choice of BB is an important mode to prevent BB's side effects, leading to an increase in compliance, which can improve the outcomes in BBs' evidence-based indications, such as acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, etc. The aim of the paper is to suggest an improved method of reporting contraindications for BBs.

Introduction: IMpower110 previously revealed significant overall survival (OS) benefit with atezolizumab versus chemotherapy in patients with treatment-naive EGFR- and ALK-negative (wild type [WT]) metastatic NSCLC with high programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression (≥50% on tumor cells [TCs] or ≥10% on tumor-infiltrating immune cells [ICs], per SP142 immunohistochemistry assay; p = 0.0106). We present primary OS analyses in lower PD-L1 expression groups and an updated, exploratory analysis in the high PD-L1 expression group.

Introduction: Risk stratification is an important aspect of COVID-19 management, especially in patients admitted to ICU as it can provide more useful consumption of health resources, as well as prioritize critical care services in situations of overwhelming number of patients.
Materials And Methods: A multivariable predictive model for mortality was developed using data solely from a derivation cohort of 160 COVID-19 patients with moderate to severe ARDS admitted to ICU. The regression coefficients from the final multivariate model of the derivation study were used to assign points for the risk model, consisted of all significant variables from the multivariate analysis and age as a known risk factor for COVID-19 patient mortality.

For the past 80 years, the effect of the Mediterranean diet on overall health has been a constant topic of interest among medical and scientific researchers. Parallel with the persistent global rise of cases of type 2 diabetes, many studies conducted in the past 20 years have shown the benefits of the Mediterranean lifestyle for people with, or at risk of developing, type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, despite the large body of evidence, concerns exist amongst scientists regarding the reliability of the data related to this topic.

Mortality decline in women to a lesser extent than in men with coronary artery disease (CAD) has provoked a bigger interest in some already existing dilemmas and questions. Many studies carried out in the past three decades did not provide us with precise conclusions. Moreover, various challenges in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and outcome of CAD in women are still remaining.

Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet drug that displays significant interindividual variability in treatment response. Its bioavailability depends on the function of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which is coded by a highly polymorphic gene. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of genetic polymorphism on clopidogrel efficacy and safety and to determine the frequency distribution of its most common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 106 Montenegrin cardiology patients.

Lipids play an essential role in platelet functions. It is known that polyunsaturated fatty acids play a role in increasing platelet reactivity and that the prothrombotic phenotype plays a crucial role in the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events. The ongoing increase in cardiovascular diseases' incidence emphasizes the importance of research linking lipids and platelet function.

Hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (HTN LVH) is associated with almost threefold increased risk of ventricular tachycardia (VT)/ventricular fibrillation (VF). Furthermore, HTN LVH increases the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). The reverse LV remodeling due to efficient antihypertensive therapy lowers the incidence rates of cardiovascular events and SCD and the vast majority of available arterial hypertension (HTN) guidelines recommend renin angiotensin system (RAS) blockers and calcium channel blockers (CCBs) for HTN LVH aiming for LVH regression.

The world has faced a coronavirus outbreak, which, in addition to lung complications, has caused other serious problems, including cardiovascular. There is still no explanation for the mechanisms of coronavirus that trigger dysfunction of the cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS). We believe that the complex mechanisms that change the status of ANS could only be solved by advanced multidimensional analysis of many variables, obtained both from the original cardiovascular signals and from laboratory analysis and detailed patient history.
