Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), usually caused by long-term tobacco smoking, is independently associated with systemic inflammation. However, little is known about the systemic inflammatory status of patients with early-stage COPD (classified as GOLD 1) and long-term smokers with normal lung function (LF). Here, we characterised the early changes in the associated inflammatory state in patients with GOLD 1 and in long-term smokers with normal LF.

Objective: The efficacy and safety of propranolol for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remain under debate. This network meta-analysis (NMA) focuses on whether a ranking may be established for different dose levels of propranolol as treatment of ROP in terms of stage progression as the primary outcome, with appearance of plus disease and need for anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (anti-VEGFs) or laser therapy as secondary endpoints.
Methods: Fourteen studies (10 randomised controlled trials, three single-arm trials and one retrospective observational study) of 474 patients treated with oral or ocular propranolol were retrieved from databases up to April 2024.

We have previously reported the total synthesis and structure-activity relationships (SAR) of 2-prenylated benzopyrans with PPAR agonist activity. Herein, we have described the synthesis and PPAR activity of 2-prenylated benzopyrans and 2-prenylated quinolines. The benzopyran nucleus was generated via enamine-catalyzed Kabbe condensation, and the quinoline nucleus via Friedländer condensation.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. While many factors can contribute to CVD, atherosclerosis is the cardinal underlying pathology, and its development is associated with several metabolic risk factors including dyslipidemia and obesity. Recent studies have definitively demonstrated a link between low-grade systemic inflammation and two relevant metabolic abnormalities: hypercholesterolemia and obesity.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) play a major role in regulating inflammatory processes, and dual or pan-PPAR agonists with PPARγ partial activation have been recognised to be useful to manage both metabolic syndrome and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Previous works have demonstrated the capacity of 2-prenylated benzopyrans as PPAR ligands. Herein, we have replaced the isoprenoid bond by hydrazone, a highly attractive functional group in medicinal chemistry.

Introduction: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is the most common cause of congenital hydronephrosis. Techniques such as laparoscopic pyeloplasty (LP) have gained in popularity over recent years. Although some retrospective studies have compared minimally invasive reconstructive techniques with open surgery for treatment of UPJO in infants, results remain controversial due to the small sample size in most of these studies.

Synthesis of three series of 2-aminopropyl derivatives containing a benzopyran nucleus was performed to evaluate their performance against triple-negative breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-436) and normal breast epithelial cells (MCF10A). For the three series, the cytotoxic activity was as follows: -methylated derivatives (tertiary amines) 5b, 6b, and 7b > secondary amine benzopyrans 5, 6, and 7 > quaternary amine salts 5c, 6c, and 7c > free phenolic derivatives 5a, 6a, and 7a. The structure-activity relationship showed the importance of the presence of an amine group and a -fluorobenzyloxy substituent in the chromanol ring (IC values from 1.

There are several implications of the surge in the incidence of pandemics and epidemics in the last decades. COVID-19 being the most remarkable one, showed the vulnerability of patients with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review studies the pathological interlinks and triggering factors between the two illnesses and proposes a multifactorial pathway of AD causation due to COVID-19.

Biological aging is a relevant risk factor for chronic diseases, and several indicators for measuring this factor have been proposed, with telomere length (TL) among the most studied. Oxidative stress may regulate telomere shortening, which is implicated in the increased risk. Using a novel estimator for TL, we examined whether adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), a highly antioxidant-rich dietary pattern, is associated with longer TL.

Biomarkers based on DNA methylation are relevant in the field of environmental health for precision health. Although tobacco smoking is one of the factors with a strong and consistent impact on DNA methylation, there are very few studies analyzing its methylation signature in southern European populations and none examining its modulation by the Mediterranean diet at the epigenome-wide level. We examined blood methylation smoking signatures on the EPIC 850 K array in this population (n = 414 high cardiovascular risk subjects).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently the most prevalent chronic liver disease in Western countries, affecting approximately 25% of the adult population. This condition encompasses a spectrum of liver diseases characterized by abnormal accumulation of fat in liver tissue (non-alcoholic fatty liver, NAFL) that can progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), characterized by the presence of liver inflammation and damage. The latter form often coexists with liver fibrosis which, in turn, may progress to a state of cirrhosis and, potentially, hepatocarcinoma, both irreversible processes that often lead to the patient's death and/or the need for liver transplantation.
