Accurate diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases require reliable biomarkers. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins are promising candidates for reflecting brain pathology; however, their diagnostic utility may be compromised by natural variability between individuals, weakening their association with disease. Here, we measured the levels of 69 pre-selected proteins in cerebrospinal fluid using antibody-based suspension bead array technology in a multi-disease cohort of 499 individuals with neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD), behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasias, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), corticobasal syndrome, primary supranuclear palsy, along with healthy controls.

For a proper representation of the causal structure of the world, it is adaptive to consider both evidence for and evidence against causality. To take punishment as an example, the causality of a stimulus is unlikely if there is a temporal gap before punishment is received, but causality is credible if the stimulus immediately precedes punishment. In contrast, causality can be ruled out if the punishment occurred first.

Background: Access to clear and comprehensible health information is crucial for patient empowerment, leading to improved self-care, adherence to treatment plans, and overall health outcomes. Traditional methods of information delivery, such as written documents and oral communication, often result in poor memorization and comprehension. Recent innovations, such as animation videos, have shown promise in enhancing patient understanding, but comprehensive investigations into their effectiveness across various health care settings are lacking.

Maternal capabilities to engage in sensitive caregiving are important for infant development and mother-infant-interaction, however, can be negatively affected by cortisol due to a stress response. Previous research suggested that cortisol possibly impairs cognitive functions important for caregiving behavior, which potentially leads to less maternal sensitivity. However, studies investigating the influence of cortisol using endocrine parameters on the mother-infant-interaction during the early postpartum are lacking.

Background And Objective: Non-motor symptoms frequently develop throughout the disease course of Parkinson's disease (PD), and pose affected individuals at risk of complications, more rapid disease progression and poorer quality of life. Addressing such symptom burden, the 2023 revised "Parkinson's disease" guideline of the German Society of Neurology aimed at providing evidence-based recommendations for managing PD non-motor symptoms, including autonomic failure, pain and sleep disturbances.
Methods: Key PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) questions were formulated by the steering committee and refined by the assigned authors.

Background: This study focused on comparing clinical and neuropsychological aspects in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) versus healthy controls (HCs) in a memory clinic, aiming to identify factors linked to the progression towards mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia.
Method: We retrospectively analysed data from 945 SCD patients and 68 HCs at Clínica Universidad de Navarra memory clinic between 2001 and 2017, with 450 followed up until January 2020, the study involved various assessments including medical interviews, lab tests, neuropsychological evaluations (during the first interview and follow-ups), and brain imaging. All the neuropsychological variables were adjusted for age, sex and education.

Introduction: Percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) is a non-invasive treatment option for finger flexion contractures caused by Dupuytren's disease. Variations in PNF techniques include the use of corticosteroid injection. In the presented randomised controlled trial, we compare the efficacy of PNF +/- corticosteroid injection in terms of reducing the recurrence rate.

Purpose: Postoperative fever (POF)/urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most unpleasant and undesirable conditions for surgeons after retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS). RIRS is not recommended for any patient with a positive urine culture to avoid POF and UTI, but some patients may develop postoperative UTI even if the urine culture is sterile. This study investigated the predictive factors of fever and UTIs after RIRS.

Introduction: Diagnostic work-up of older women with a positive cervical cancer screening test is often challenging due to incomplete visualization of the transformation zone. To reduce the risk of missing disease, a diagnostic cervical excision may be performed. However, little is known on treatment efficacy and post-treatment surveillance for older women.

Establishing an accurate prognosis for women diagnosed with breast cancer (BC) is extremely challenging. Axillary lymph node (ALN) evaluation is considered of major prognostic value. The one-step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA) assay is currently used for assessing axillary sentinel lymph node (SLN) status in BC.

Objective: Myocardial protection is important for a successful procedure cardiac surgery, and the key element of myocardial protection is cardioplegia. We compared Del Nido cardioplegia (DN) and Bretschneider histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate cardioplegia (HTK) regarding cardioprotective effects in a porcine model of prolonged ischaemia.
Methods: Landrace pigs weighing 50-60 kg were randomized to receive either DN ( = 9) or HTK ( = 9).

Classic psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin are showing promising effects in treating certain psychiatric disorders. Despite their low toxicity and lack of an addictive potential, in some individuals, psychedelics can be associated with persisting psychological harms. Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) is one of those complications, a rare disorder characterized by enduring perceptual symptoms without impaired reality control.

The demand for cartilage reconstruction in the head and neck region arises frequently due to trauma, malignancies, and hereditary diseases. Traditional tissue engineering produces cartilage from a small biopsy by combining biomaterials and expanded cells. However, this top-down approach is associated with several limitations, including the non-uniform distribution of cells, lack of physiological cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and compromised mechanical properties and tissue architecture.

Individuals with ADHD struggle with time perception. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) are two distinct cortical areas that are involved in the psychopathology of ADHD, including time perception. In the present study, we aimed to explore if modulation of the excitability of these areas with non-invasive brain stimulation alters time perception in ADHD.

Introduction: Autoantibody-mediated complement activation plays an essential role in a variety of autoimmune disorders. However, the role of complement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to determine the role of complement C3 in the development of a recently described SSc mouse model based on autoimmunity to angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1R).

Introduction: The differentiation between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) can be complicated in the initial phase by shared symptoms and pathophysiological traits. Nevertheless, advancements in understanding AD's diverse pathobiology suggest the potential for establishing blood-based methods for differential diagnosis.
Methods: We devised a novel assay combining immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry (IP-MS) to quantify Amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides in plasma.

PER: and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of synthetic organic chemicals that are ubiquitous environmental pollutants. Among PFAS, perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) is one of the most toxic compounds, but the molecular basis behind its toxicity is not fully understood. In an interspecies comparison with placental cells (HTR-8/SVneo) and zebrafish embryos, we demonstrate that PFDA induces mitochondrial dysfunction and impairs fatty acid β-oxidation.
