Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to validate micro computed tomography (microCT) as an effective method for assessing bone healing in irradiated rabbits, comparing its results to traditional histology.
  • Nineteen female New Zealand white rabbits were subjected to radiation therapy followed by microCT scans at various intervals, revealing significant differences in bone quality and density between irradiated and non-irradiated bones primarily at Days 28 and 42.
  • The strong correlation between microCT and histological results suggests that microCT could be a reliable, non-invasive tool for evaluating bone healing post-radiation, benefiting both research and clinical settings by reducing the need for invasive techniques.

Department of Oncology, Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, Geneva, Switzerland; Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Platinum resistant ovarian cancer, usually defined as progression occurring within 6 months after completing platinum-based therapy, is a heterogeneous disease with poor prognosis and short survival (less than 18 months). It is typically considered as a "cold tumor", characterized by reduced infiltration by immune cells, particularly CD8 T cells. Response rate to anti-PD1/PD-L1 monotherapy is low, not exceeding 8%.

Density-dependent competition for food reduces vital rates, with juvenile survival often the first to decline. A clear prediction of food-based, density-dependent competition for large herbivores is decreasing juvenile survival with increasing density. However, competition for enemy-free space could also be a significant mechanism for density dependence in territorial species.

In the OS2006 study, patients younger than 18 years were treated with a methotrexate-based regimen (MTX), patients older than 25 years with a doxorubicin-cisplatin-ifosfamide-based regimen (API-AI), whereas patients aged 18-25 years received either API-AI or MTX. We herein report the prespecified subgroup analysis of the outcome of 106 patients treated with API-AI. Preoperative chemotherapy combined three doxorubicin-ifosfamide-cisplatin (API) and two doxorubicin-ifosfamide (AI) courses.

Over the past two decades, the field of osteoimmunology has emerged in response to a range of evidence demonstrating the reciprocal relationship between the immune system and bone. In particular, localized bone loss, in the form of joint erosions and periarticular osteopenia, as well as systemic osteoporosis, caused by inflammatory rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, the prototype of inflammatory arthritis has highlighted the importance of this interplay. Osteoclast-mediated resorption at the interface between synovium and bone is responsible for the joint erosion seen in patients suffering from inflammatory arthritis.

Article Synopsis
  • Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare tumors, making up less than 1% of cancers, and the elderly, particularly those over 90, are often underrepresented in clinical trials.
  • A study using data from the NETSARC network analyzed STS patients over 90, revealing they often have complex genomic tumors but are less likely to undergo optimal surgeries compared to younger patients.
  • Although survival rates are generally worse for patients over 90, those who had surgeries demonstrated survival outcomes similar to younger patients, indicating the need for better management in this age group.

Scope: Obese adipose tissue (AT) is infiltrated by inflammatory immune cells including IL-17A-producing-T (Th17) cells. It has been previously demonstrated that adipose-derived stem cells from obese (ob-ASCs), but not lean AT promote Th17 cells. Because n-3 PUFAs are known to inhibit obese AT inflammation, it is tested here whether they could inhibit ob-ASC-mediated IL-17A secretion.

Background: Alternative endpoints to overall survival (OS) are frequently used to assess treatment efficacy in randomized controlled trials (RCT). Their properties in terms of surrogate outcomes for OS need to be assessed. We evaluated the surrogate properties of progression-free survival (PFS), time-to-progression (TTP) and time-to-treatment failure (TTF) in advanced soft tissue sarcomas (STS).

Rhythmic neuronal synchronization across large-scale networks is thought to play a key role in the regulation of conscious states. Changes in neuronal oscillation amplitude across states of consciousness have been widely reported, but little is known about possible changes in the temporal dynamics of these oscillations. The temporal structure of brain oscillations may provide novel insights into the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness.

Purpose Of Review: In this article, we focus on recent published data (2017) on the management of gynecologic sarcomas.

Recent Findings: The most significant data published in 2017 develop definition of a new molecular subtype of high grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) using molecular technics added to histological analysis. The identification of a new translocation on presumed uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) points to refinement of nosological classification, with fragmentation of even rare tumors into distinct molecular entities: gynecologic sarcomas are now distinguished into distinct entities from a heterogeneous group of tumors.

Surgery (+ radiation therapy in selected cases) is standard treatment for adult-type localized soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Accumulating randomized clinical evidence also supports adjuvant chemotherapy as a treatment option, although this remains contentious. Doxorubicin (± ifosfamide) is the standard first-line systemic treatment for advanced STS; however, newer chemotherapeutic agents may improve outcomes achieved with single-agent doxorubicin.

The mechanisms affecting epidermal homeostasis during aging remain poorly understood. To identify age-related microRNAs, a class of non-coding RNAs known to play a key role in the regulation of epidermal homeostasis, an exhaustive miRNA expression screen was performed in human keratinocytes from young or elderly subjects. Many microRNAs modulated by aging were identified, including miR-30a, in which both strands were overexpressed in aged cells and epidermal tissue.

Article Synopsis
  • - The POCIS is a passive sampling device used to collect micropollutants, with an outer PES membrane and an inner HLB phase that allows for different patterns of chemical uptake, specifically modeled as CRK1 and CRK2.
  • - In earlier research, the study identified 30 micropollutants following the CRK1 model and 13 following the CRK2 model, and explored how the outer membrane's uptake may affect these models.
  • - The research also revealed that the lag time for micropollutants to penetrate the PES membrane increased with their hydrophobicity, and a factorial discriminant analysis achieved over 90% prediction confidence for the accumulation pattern based on properties like log D and polar surface
