There is currently growing clinical concern regarding dysfunctional breathing disorder(s) (DBD), an umbrella term for a set of multidimensional clinical conditions that are characterized by altered breathing pattern associated with a variety of intermittent or chronic symptoms, notably dyspnea, in the absence or in excess of, organic disease. However, several aspects of DBD remain poorly understood and/or open to debate, especially the inconsistent relationship between the array of experienced symptoms and their supposedly underlying mechanisms. This may be partly due to a more general problem, i.

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disease with possible dysregulation of the apoptotic pathways. We aimed to evaluate the possible role of some apoptotic markers (caspase 3, caspase 8 and BCL2) in the pathogenesis and course of ITP. We investigated some apoptotic markers (caspase 3, caspase 8 and BCL2) using the flow cytometry in 60 children with newly diagnosed ITP, 20 children with chemotherapy-related thrombocytopenia (CRT) and 20 healthy children.

Background: Electrocardiographic (ECG) findings in arrhythmogenic left ventricular cardiomyopathy (ALVC) are limited to small case series.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the ECG characteristics of ALVC patients and to correlate ECG with cardiac magnetic resonance and genotype data.
Methods: We reviewed data of 54 consecutive ALVC patients (32 men, age 39 ± 15 years) and compared them with 84 healthy controls with normal cardiac magnetic resonance.

Objectives: Juvenile systemic sclerosis is a rare childhood disease. Three disease activity indices have been published for adult patients with systemic sclerosis: the European Scleroderma Study Group Index, a modified version of the European Scleroderma Study Group Index and the revised European Scleroderma Trials and Research index. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility and performance of the three disease activity indices in a prospectively followed cohort of patients with juvenile systemic sclerosis.

Introduction: New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-producing poses a high risk, especially among Egyptian pediatric patients who consume carbapenems antibiotics very widely and without adequate diagnostic sources. In addition, presence of efflux pump genes such as increases resistance against many groups of antimicrobials which exacerbates the problem faced for human health. This study aimed to determine NDM variants among strains isolated from pediatric patients in Egypt, analyze the presence of genes, and molecular characterization of -positive .

Children with acquired hypocellular bone marrow failure of unknown cause (AHBMF) are usually diagnosed either with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) or refractory cytopenia of childhood (RCC). Patients with AHBMF who lack a matched donor and who failed or relapsed after immunosuppressive therapy (IST) need alternative therapies. Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) offers a curative treatment for these patients.

Background: Electrocardiogram (ECG) has proven to be useful for early detection of cardiac involvement in Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD); however, little evidence is available on the association between ECG alterations and the progression of the disease.
Aim And Methods: To perform a cross sectional comparison of ECG abnormalities throughout different left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) severity subgroups, providing ECG patterns specific of the progressive AFD stages. 189 AFD patients from a multicenter cohort underwent comprehensive ECG analysis, echocardiography, and clinical evaluation.

Objective: To compare organ involvement and disease severity between male and female patients with juvenile onset systemic sclerosis.
Methods: Demographics, organ involvement, laboratory evaluation, patient-reported outcomes and physician assessment variables were compared between male and female juvenile onset systemic sclerosis patients enrolled in the prospective international juvenile systemic sclerosis cohort at their baseline visit and after 12 months.
Results: One hundred and seventy-five juvenile onset systemic sclerosis patients were evaluated, 142 females and 33 males.

Background/objectives: Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is a multiorgan disorder with increased vulnerability to cancer. Despite this increased cancer risk, there are no widely accepted guidelines for cancer surveillance in people affected by A-T. We aimed to understand the current international practice regarding cancer surveillance in A-T and agreed-upon approaches to develop cancer surveillance in A-T.

Background: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) surgery is the traditional method for treating hydrocephalus, remaining one of the most regularly used procedures in pediatric neurosurgery. The reported revision rate of VPS can reach up to 80% and significantly reduces the quality of life in the affected children and has a high socioeconomic burden. Traditionally, distal VPS placement has been achieved open via a small laparotomy.

Background: Tacrolimus is the backbone drug in kidney transplantation. Single nucleotide polymorphism of Multidrug resistant 1 gene can affect tacrolimus metabolism consequently it can affect tacrolimus trough level and incidence of acute rejection. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of Multidrug resistant 1 gene, C3435T and G2677T Single nucleotide polymorphisms on tacrolimus pharmacokinetics and on the risk of acute rejection in pediatric kidney transplant recipients.

Objective: Epilepsy surgery is widely accepted as an effective therapeutic option for carefully selected patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). There is limited data on the outcome of epilepsy surgery, especially in pediatric patients from the Eastern Mediterranean region. Hence, we performed a retrospective study examining the outcomes of resective surgery in 53 pediatric patients with focal DRE.

Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by isolated thrombocytopenia in the absence of other disorders. Vitamin D (VD) has been shown to modulate the immune system and its deficiency is linked to many immunological disorders. Supplementation with VD in ITP has promising results.

Background: Follicular cell-derived thyroid carcinoma represents the vast majority of paediatric thyroid cancers (TCs). Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) accounts for over 90% of all childhood TC cases, and its incidence in paediatric patients is increasing. The objective of this follow-up study was to present the outcome of ultrasound (US) and laboratory monitoring of paediatric patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) prior to the development of PTC.

Syndromic craniosynostosis (SC) is a genetically determined premature closure of one or more of the cranial sutures, which may result in severe dysmorphism, increased intracranial pressure along with many other clinical manifestations. The considerable risk of complications along with their significant incidence makes these cranial deformations an important medical problem. Aiming to elucidate the complex genetic etiology of syndromic craniosynostosis, we investigated 39 children, screened systematically with a combination of conventional cytogenetic analysis, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and array-based comparative genomic hybridisation (aCGH).
