Although extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) improves oxygenation, pulmonary vascular resistance may be increased due to endothelial function impairment. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) is increasingly used for treatment of pulmonary hypertension after surgical repair of congenital heart defects, with or without ECMO. One of the main complications of its application is deterioration of oxygenation following withdrawal of iNO.

Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to investigate environmental risk factors in the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus in a population-based case-control study. Parents of all patients with manifestation of type 1 diabetes between 1989 and 1994 in Vienna were asked to complete a questionnaire (n = 114). Control children (n = 495), matched for age and sex, were randomly recruited from all schools in Vienna.

IGF-II plays a major role in the regulation of human fetal growth and development. However, more extensive information on the cellular sites of IGF-II synthesis in the fetus would provide more insight into its role in fetal organogenesis. Thus we have determined the sites of IGF-II synthesis in 18-26-wk gestation human fetal tissues using in situ hybridization with a digoxigenin-labeled cRNA probe to localize IGF-II mRNA in fetal liver, kidney, adrenal gland, cerebral cortex, costal cartilage, skeletal muscle, and lung, and in placental tissue.

Background: Recently, increased serum levels of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in cystic fibrosis (CF) have been reported which were closely related to the levels in sputum. In the present study we investigated other eosinophil proteins such as eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) and eosinophil protein X (EPX) in sera of patients with CF and their relation to pulmonary function.

Methods: Serum samples from 42 patients with CF and from 25 healthy control subjects were measured for ECP, EPO and EPX.

We report on a male infant who presented with intrauterine growth retardation, severe postnatal failure to thrive, microcephaly, facial dysmorphism, and skeletal dysplasia. The clinical and radiological findings are consistent with former descriptions of microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism (MOPD) type I/III. In addition to previously published features, multiple fractures of the long bones, severe neonatal cholestasis, and histological dysplasia of the kidneys were found.
