Article Synopsis
  • Cancer can lead to serious kidney issues in children requiring kidney replacement therapy (KRT), with a study identifying 287 pediatric KRT patients who had a history of cancer.
  • The study showed that those whose cancer caused KRT had a longer wait for kidney transplantation compared to matched controls, with a median time of 2.4 years for cancer patients versus shorter times for controls.
  • While childhood cancer survivors experienced increased mortality rates while on KRT (16% for group 1 and 23% for group 2) compared to controls, their long-term survival rates after kidney transplantation were similar to non-cancer patients.

Introduction: The death of a child has a tremendous impact on parents' lives. The experience of parents who have lost a child to cancer may differ from other bereavement experiences, including other childhood and adulthood causes of death, because of the uncertainty of the prognosis, the aggressive treatment, and the potential for regret about treatment decisions. Bereavement care remains scarce, and effective interventions to meet the diverse needs of parents have not been defined.

Lung function parameters are associated with acute mountain sickness and are improved at high and extreme altitude.

Respir Physiol Neurobiol

December 2024

Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Allergology and Clinical Immunology, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, University of Bern, Switzerland; Swiss Sportclinic, Bern, Switzerland. Electronic address:

At altitude, factors such as decreased barometric pressure, low temperatures, and acclimatization might affect lung function. The effects of exposure and acclimatization to high-altitude on lung function were assessed in 39 subjects by repetitive spirometry up to 6022 m during a high-altitude expedition. Subjects were classified depending on the occurrence of acute mountain sickness (AMS) and summit success to evaluate whether lung function relates to successful climb and risk of developing AMS.

Author Affiliations: Head Office of Nursing, Department of Nursing Development, Inselspital University Hospital Bern, Bern, Switzerland (Ms Hirter and Dr Spichiger); Department of Neonatology, University Hospital Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland (Ms Dinten-Schmid); Medical University Graz, Graz, Austria (Dr Avian); COPE for HOPE Inc, Hammondsport, New York (Dr Feinstein); Children's Hospital Boblingen, Boblingen, Germany (Dr Nelle); and Department of Neonatology, University Children's Hospital Bern, Bern, Switzerland (Ms Stoffel Zurcher).

The birth of a premature infant and its subsequent hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit are stressful experiences for mothers. Because of uncertainty concerning interactions with a premature baby, mothers often feel helpless and only hesitantly assume their maternal role. This may have a negative impact on the mother-child interaction and prevents mothers from taking an active part in E46www.

Psychological distress is an important and frequent health problem. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) allows screening for psychological distress in clinical, general and research populations. We aimed to provide normative data for the BSI and the BSI-18 for the Swiss general population: We 1) present psychometric properties, 2) develop a Swiss T-standardization and validate it using a clinical sample, 3) describe psychological distress in the Swiss general population and the clinical sample, and 4) compare the means and T-standardized scores of the Swiss general population to different German norm populations.

Background: Normal hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) endocrine function is essential for female pubertal and psychosocial development and for ongoing adult physical, sexual, and psychosocial health. Girls with hypogonadism, any endocrine disorder causing abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) or with contraception needs may require sex hormone treatment. Challenges include evolving needs of a young girl through the course of sexual maturation, potential health risks related to the use of sex hormones for pubertal induction, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), menstrual management, and/or contraception.

Background: Newborn bloodspot screening (NBS) for cystic fibrosis (CF) is important for early diagnosis and treatment. However, screening can lead to false-positive results leading to unnecessary follow-up tests and distress. This study evaluated the 11-year performance of the Swiss CF-NBS programme, estimated optimal cut-offs for immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT), and examined how simulated algorithms would change performance.

Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome (RMS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by severe insulin resistance, resulting in early-onset diabetes mellitus. We report the first case of RMS in a Paraguayan patient. The patient is a 6-year-old girl who presented with hypertrichosis, acanthosis nigricans, nephrocalcinosis, and elevated levels of glucose and insulin that served as diagnostic indicators for RMS.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) screening is tedious and still performed by analysis of total glycosaminoglycans (GAG) using 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue (DMB) photometric assay, although false positive and negative tests have been reported. Analysis of differentiated GAGs have been pursued classically by gel electrophoresis or more recently by quantitative LC-MS assays. Secondary elevations of GAGs have been reported in urinary tract infections (UTI).

Pharmacogenomics of poor drug metabolism in greyhounds: Canine P450 oxidoreductase genetic variation, breed heterogeneity, and functional characterization.

PLoS One

February 2024

Pharmacogenomics Laboratory, Program in Individualized Medicine (PrIMe), Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University, Pullman, Washington, United States of America.

Greyhounds metabolize cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2B11 substrates more slowly than other dog breeds. However, CYP2B11 gene variants associated with decreased CYP2B11 expression do not fully explain reduced CYP2B11 activity in this breed. P450 oxidoreductase (POR) is an essential redox partner for all CYPs.

Cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase (POR) is an essential redox partner for steroid and drug-metabolizing cytochromes P450 located in the endoplasmic reticulum. Mutations in lead to metabolic disorders, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and affect the metabolism of steroids, drugs, and xenobiotics. In this study, we examined approximately 450 missense variants of the gene listed in the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) using eleven different in silico prediction tools.

Background: Cancer predisposition syndromes (CPSs) are responsible for at least 10% of cancer diagnoses in children and adolescents, most of which are not clinically recognised prior to cancer diagnosis. A variety of clinical screening guidelines are used in healthcare settings to help clinicians detect patients who have a higher likelihood of having a CPS. The McGill Interactive Pediatric OncoGenetic Guidelines (MIPOGG) is an electronic health decision support tool that uses algorithms to help clinicians determine if a child/adolescent diagnosed with cancer should be referred to genetics for a CPS evaluation.
