Background: Several appliances or treatment protocols are marketed to either patients or orthodontists as being associated with improved orthodontic outcomes. However, clinical decision-making should be based on robust scientific evidence and not marketing claims or anecdotal evidence.
Objective: To identify appliances/protocols being associated with improved outcomes of fixed appliance treatment.

Objective: Dental implants show impressive survival and like rates, but peri-implantitis is a frequent inflammatory disease which affects the implant-surrounding tissues. While biofilms on the implant surface is considered its etiologic reason, several risk factors determine the pace of progression of peri-implant bone loss. Some risk factors are generally accepted while others are still unconfirmed and a matter of ongoing discussion.

Purpose: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients receiving long-term and high-dose immunosuppressive medications suffer commonly from oral candida infections. This prospective cohort study examined oral fungal carriage in HSCT recipients and screened the susceptibility against commonly used antifungal agents. An increasing oral occurrence of Candida spp.

Background: Numerous studies support a bidirectional association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune degenerative inflammatory joint disease, and periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the immune reaction to bacteria organized in biofilms. RA and periodontitis are both multifactorial chronic inflammatory diseases that share common modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. There is no cure for RA; treatment is based on lifestyle modifications and a variety of medications: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), glucocorticoids, and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs, e.

The study aimed to summarize current knowledge regarding the use of orthopaedic functional appliances (OFA) in managing unilateral craniofacial microsomia (UCM). The eligibility criteria for the review were (1) assessing use of OFA as a stand-alone treatment and (2) using OFA in combination during or after MDO. The PICO (population, intervention, comparison and outcome) format formulated clinical questions with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Previous systematic reviews have reported that coronally advanced flap (CAF) + connective tissue graft (CTG) are the gold standard in root coverage procedures (RCP). Nevertheless, adjunctive treatment with hyaluronic acid (HA) has been proposed to aim at improving clinical outcomes and reducing patient morbidity. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare the use of HA as an adjunctive treatment to CAF procedures in Miller class I and II (recession type 1; RT1) gingival recession (GR) defects treatment with no adjunctive/other treatments.

Aim: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of commonly used methods for occlusal caries diagnostics, such as visual examination (VE), bitewing radiography (BW) and laser fluorescence (LF), in relation to their ability to detect (dentin) caries under clinical and laboratory conditions.
Materials And Methods: A systematic search of the literature was performed to identify studies meeting the inclusion criteria using the PIRDS concept (N = 1090). A risk of bias (RoB) assessment tool was used for quality evaluation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of dentists to remove composite fillings from endodontic access cavities using illumination from a conventional light source (CLS) versus the fluorescence-aided identification technique (FIT) in terms of completeness, selectivity and treatment duration. Therefore, two independent operators removed composite resin from six sets of root-filled incisors in a maxillary model under simulated clinical conditions using the CLS or FIT method (twelve teeth per operator and technique). The duration of treatment was recorded and before-after micro-CT scans were superimposed for volumetric assessment of treatment completeness and selectivity.

Background: To report the outcome of guided endodontic treatment (GET) of a case of dentin dysplasia with pulp canal calcification (PCC) and apical periodontitis based on the use of a 3D-printed template designed by merging cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and surface scan data.
Case Presentation: A 12-year old female with radicular dentin dysplasia type I (DD-1) presented for endodontic treatment. Radiography revealed PCC in all teeth and apical radiolucency in seven teeth (12, 15, 26, 31, 32, 36 and 46).

Aims To investigate the awareness and practice of 2D and 3D diagnostic imaging, including respective equipment, specifications, number of images acquired, indications for CBCT scans, preference between 2D and 3D imaging, and the confidence in acquiring and interpreting radiographic images among dentists in Hong Kong.Materials and methods A citywide survey was performed with an online questionnaire that was sent via the local dental association to registered dentists in Hong Kong. The anonymous survey focused on: their dental background; number, type and age of their intra-oral, panoramic devices; CBCT indications, field-of-view and consideration of low-dose protocols; and their confidence in taking and interpreting these images.

Background: To investigate the impact of scanning parameter in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images on accuracy and confidence with measurements of furcation involvement (FI) in maxillary molars.
Material And Methods: Six half cadaver heads with present maxillary molars (n = 10) were available. CBCT scans with the fixed-parameter field of view (4 × 4 cm, 12 × 17 cm) amperage and voltage (4 mA, 90 kV) and with varying scan modes (SM), that is images/scan (IS), voxel sizes (VZ) and rotation (R), were performed using one CBCT apparatus.

Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare endodontic access cavities in teeth with calcified root canals prepared with the conventional technique and a guided endodontics approach regarding the detection of root canals, substance loss, and treatment duration.
Methods: Six identical sets of upper and lower jaw models were produced with 3-dimensional-printed incisors that had simulated calcified root canals. Splints for guided access preparations were fabricated based on 3-dimensional surface scans and cone-beam computed tomographic data sets.

This case report is the fourth in a series that illustrates the application of the BSP implementation plan for diagnosing periodontitis patients according to the 2017 classification. It demonstrates the diagnostic approach and disease classification for a previously treated patient who presented with a diagnosis of unstable generalised periodontitis; stage IV, grade C. We describe a case of a 49-year-old patient who attended with a history of periodontal treatment over several years.

The objective of this case report is to illustrate the diagnosis and classification of periodontitis, according to the 2017 classification system, as recommended in the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) implementation plan. A 37-year-old female was diagnosed with periodontitis (molar-incisor pattern), stage III, grade C, currently unstable. Several issues pertinent to the diagnosis of localised forms of periodontitis in young patients are discussed in relation to the current and previous classification systems.

The objective of this case report is to illustrate the diagnosis and classification of periodontitis according to the 2017 classification system as recommended in the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) implementation plan. We describe a case of a patient who was diagnosed with 'localised periodontitis; stage II, grade B; currently unstable'. The present case report presents an example for the application of the new classification system and illustrates how the new classification system captures disease severity, extent and disease susceptibility by staging and grading periodontitis.
