Objectives: The performance of synovial fluid biomarker D-lactate to diagnose septic arthritis (SA) and differentiate it from crystal-induced arthritis (CA), other non-infectious rheumatic joint diseases (RD) and osteoarthrosis (OA) was evaluated.

Fracture fixation in an ageing population is challenging and fixation failure increases mortality and societal costs. We report a novel fracture fixation treatment by applying a hydroxyapatite (HA) based biomaterial at the bone-implant interface and biologically activating the biomaterial by systemic administration of a bisphosphonate (zoledronic acid, ZA). Objective: Severe soft tissue damage with destruction of the dermis requires plastic reconstructive treatment. For multimorbid patients or patients unable to undergo major reconstructive surgery, use of dermal substitutes, such as a collagen-elastin matrix (CEM) with a split-thickness skin graft (STSG), instead of local or free flap surgery, may be a valid and easy treatment option. Despite the glimmer of hope provided by the discovery and commercialization of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) as a bone graft substitute, side effects related to the use of supraphysiological doses have hindered its clinical usage. In this study, we compared the osteoinductive potential of BMP-2 homodimer with a heterodimer of BMP-2/7, both delivered via a collagen-hydroxyapatite (CHA) scaffold delivery system, with the aim to reduce the overall therapeutic BMP doses and the associated side-effects. We first show that the incorporation of hydroxyapatite in collagen-based BMP delivery systems is pivotal for achieving efficient BMP sequestration and controlled release.

Background: Periacetabular osteotomy is a successful treatment for hip dysplasia. The results are influenced, however, by optimal positioning of the acetabular fragment, femoral head morphology and maybe even femoral version as well as combined anteversion have an impact. The influence of drugs on peripheral nerve regeneration.

Currently, there are no established adjuvant drugs for the acceleration of peripheral nerve regeneration. In this paper, we reviewed the literature from the last 10 years and described the drugs proved to accelerate the functional and histological regeneration of the peripheral nerves, either after trauma or in neuropathy experimental models. The vast majority of the studies were experimental with very few small clinical studies, which indicates the need for prospective randomized studies to identify the best drugs to use as adjuvants for nerve regeneration.

Background: Taper corrosion in total hip arthroplasty for bearings with metal heads against polyethylene has developed from an anecdotal observation to a clinical problem. Increased taper wear and even gross taper failure have been reported for one particular design. It is hypothesized that corrosion of the female head taper results in taper widening, allowing the cobalt-chromium head to turn on the stem and wear down the softer titanium alloy by abrasive wear, ultimately causing failure.
