Article Synopsis
  • Statin use is linked to a reduced risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), particularly among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a group already at high risk for CRC.
  • In a study involving over 5,000 statin users and non-statin users, those on statins showed a significantly lower incidence of CRC and related mortality over a median follow-up of 5.6 years.
  • The protective effect of statins against CRC was found to increase with the duration of use, particularly noticeable after two years of consistent usage.

December 2023

Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden; Department of Pediatrics, Örebro University Hospital, Örebro, Sweden; Department of Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, New York, USA.

Background & Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD; formerly NAFLD) is the fastest growing cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. However, whether family members of individuals with MASLD also share an increased risk of developing HCC is unknown.

Methods: This nationwide multigenerational cohort study involved family members of all Swedish adults diagnosed with biopsy-proven MASLD (1969-2017), and matched general population comparators.

Introduction: The learning curve in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is steep compared to open surgery. One of the reasons is that training in the operating room in MIS is mainly limited to verbal instructions. The iSurgeon telestration device with augmented reality (AR) enables visual instructions, guidance, and feedback during MIS.

Electronic address:

The intricate interplay between gut microbes and the onset of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) remains poorly understood. Here, we uncover remarkable similarities between CD4 T cells in the spinal cord and their counterparts in the small intestine. Furthermore, we unveil a synergistic relationship between the microbiota, particularly enriched with the tryptophan metabolism gene EC:1.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. Extensive screening studies have revealed the accumulation of immune cell subsets with unique plasticity and immunoregulatory properties in patients with CD. We performed phenotypic and functional studies on inflamed and non-inflamed bioptic tissue to investigate the presence of distinct T cells in the intestinal mucosa of CD patients.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are innate-like T cells that recognize microbial metabolites through a semi-invariant T cell receptor (TCR). Major questions remain regarding the extent of human MAIT cell functional and clonal diversity. To address these, we analyzed the single-cell transcriptome and TCR repertoire of blood and liver MAIT cells and developed functional RNA-sequencing, a method to integrate function and TCR clonotype at single-cell resolution.

Background And Aims: Previous literature suggests an association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and infections. We aimed to determine the rate and risk of severe infections in NAFLD compared to the general population.

Methods: In this population-based cohort study, we used national registers to identify all patients with a hospital-based diagnosis of NAFLD in Sweden 1987-2020 (n = 14 869).

Background: ChatGPT-4 is the latest release of a novel artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot able to answer freely formulated and complex questions. In the near future, ChatGPT could become the new standard for health care professionals and patients to access medical information. However, little is known about the quality of medical information provided by the AI.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the potential link between antibiotic use and the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a large cohort of Swedish adults, finding a 1.35-fold increased risk in those with prior antibiotic use compared to controls.
  • - The research highlights a dose-dependent relationship, indicating the more antibiotics prescribed, the higher the risk of NAFLD, particularly after treatment with fluoroquinolones.
  • - Importantly, the association between antibiotic use and NAFLD was significant mainly in patients without metabolic syndrome, suggesting specific risk factors influence the disease's development.

Introduction: Successful R0 resection is crucial for the survival of patients with primary liver cancer (PLC) or liver metastases. Up to date, surgical resection lacks a sensitive, real-time intraoperative imaging modality to determine R0 resection. Real-time intraoperative visualization with near-infrared light fluorescence (NIRF) using indocyanine green (ICG) may have the potential to meet this demand.

Background And Objectives: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at an increased risk of thromboembolic events, but evidence on the long-term risk of stroke remains scarce. We aimed to explore whether patients with a biopsy-confirmed IBD had an increased long-term risk of stroke.

Methods: This cohort included all patients with biopsy-confirmed IBD in Sweden between 1969 and 2019 and up to 5 matched reference individuals per patient who were randomly selected from the general population and IBD-free full siblings.

Context: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is highly prevalent among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); however, there is still no approved pharmacological treatment. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors have been suggested to beneficially modify liver-related outcomes in patients with diabetes.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the effects of the SGLT-2 inhibitor canagliflozin on liver-related outcomes in patients with advanced T2DM and high cardiovascular risk.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) makes up less than 1% of all gastrointestinal tumors, but it is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the digestive system. It is commonly found in the stomach and the small intestine and rarely seen in the colon and the esophagus. Additionally, sigmoid GIST is quite rare since colorectal GIST often occurs in the rectum.

Following severe liver injury, when hepatocyte-mediated regeneration is impaired, biliary epithelial cells (BECs) can transdifferentiate into functional hepatocytes. However, the subset of BECs with such facultative tissue stem cell potential, as well as the mechanisms enabling transdifferentiation, remains elusive. Here we identify a transitional liver progenitor cell (TLPC), which originates from BECs and differentiates into hepatocytes during regeneration from severe liver injury.
