Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed within the 2030 Agenda and adopted by all the United Nations member states, the 13th SDG is a call for action to combat climate change. Moreover, SDGs 14 and 15 claim the protection and conservation of life below water and life on land, respectively. In this work, we provide a literature-founded overview of application areas, in which computer audition - a powerful but in this context so far hardly considered technology, combining audio signal processing and machine intelligence - is employed to monitor our ecosystem with the potential to identify ecologically critical processes or states.

The optimized design of the catalyst layer (CL) plays a vital role in improving the performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The need to improve transport and catalyst activity is especially important at low Pt loading, where local oxygen and ionic transport resistances decrease the performance due to an inevitable reduction in active catalyst sites. In this work, local oxygen and ionic transport are analyzed using direct numerical simulation on virtually reconstructed microstructures.

Fiber Metal Laminates (FMLs) have garnered considerable attention and are increasingly being utilized in the development of protective armors for explosion and ballistic scenarios. While most research has focused on assessing the response of FMLs to single impacts, real battlefield situations often require shielding structures to endure multiple impacts. Thus, this study revolves around the creation of hybrid FMLs designed for shock shielding purposes.

Novel materials such as fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) have demonstrated significant potential in a variety of applications. They must contend with problems such fatigue, creep, high-speed projectile impact, and deformation at high strain rates while in use. When employed as structural materials in aircraft, especially when exposed to shock wave impact and high velocity impact, fiber-metal laminates' high strain rate characteristics become crucial.

Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is used in the defence industry mainly owing to its properties, such as excellent dimensional stability, excellent ballistic performance, and light weight. Although UHMWPE laminates are generally studied under impact loads, it is crucial to understand better the optimal machining conditions for assembling auxiliary structures in combat helmets or armour. This work analyses the machinability of UHMWPE laminates by drilling.

The reliable and safe operation of industrial systems needs to detect and diagnose bearing faults as early as possible. Intelligent fault diagnostic systems that use deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) techniques have achieved a great deal of success in recent years. In a traditional CNN, the fully connected layer is located in the final three layers, and such a layer consists of multiple layers that are all connected.

Biological rhythms are periodic internal variations of living organisms that act as adaptive responses to environmental changes. The human pacemaker is the suprachiasmatic nucleus, a brain region involved in biological functions like homeostasis or emotion. Biological rhythms are ultradian (<24 h), circadian (∼24 h), or infradian (>24 h) depending on their period.

Background: Muscle strength and dexterity impairments are common among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) producing limitations in activities of daily living related to the upper limb (UL). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of serious games specifically developed for the MYO Armband® capture sensor in improving forearm and wrist mobility, UL muscle strength, dexterity, fatigue, functionality, quality of life, satisfaction, adverse effects and compliance.
Methods: A double-blinded (allocation concealment was performed by a blinded investigator and by blinding for assessors) randomised controlled trial was conducted.

is a bacterial genus with some saprophytic species from land and others associated with opportunistic infections in humans and animals. Factors such as pathogenicity or metabolic aspects have been related to CRISPR-Cas, and in silico studies into it have focused more on the clinical and non-environmental setting. This work aimed to perform an in silico analysis of the CRISPR-Cas systems present in genomes.

This article presents a 3D-printed cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna operating at 5.8 GHz that achieves circular polarization by integrating a fully dielectric parasitic helix with a higher permittivity than the cylindrical resonator. The antenna polarization can be right-handed or left-handed depending on the turning sense of the helix.

Mental disorders in children and adolescents may follow different trajectories, such as remission, change of diagnosis, or addition of two or more comorbid diagnoses, showing a heterotypic pattern. This study aims to describe the main diagnostic trajectories across a broad range of mental disorder diagnostic categories, from childhood to adolescence and from adolescence to young adulthood in a clinical population. A prospective study was conducted among a clinical sample of children and adolescents who were aged 3-17 years at the face-to-face baseline interview.

Recently, various research studies have been developed to address communication sensors for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). In particular, when pondering control difficulties, communication is a crucial component. To this end, strengthening a control algorithm with redundant linking sensors ensures the overall system works accurately, even if some components fail.

One of the consequences of the big data revolution is that data are more heterogeneous than ever. A new challenge appears when mixed-type data sets evolve over time and we are interested in the comparison among individuals. In this work, we propose a new protocol that integrates robust distances and visualization techniques for dynamic mixed data.

Studies on macro-level conditions related to abortion attitudes overlook the role of gender balance in the workforce-specifically the degree of female representation in a country's workforce. There are strong reasons why this factor could shape abortion attitudes.

We present a novel near-infrared spectroscopy technique based on Dual-Comb optical interrogation (DC-NIRS) applied to dispersive media. The technique recovers the frequency response of the medium under investigation by sampling its spectral response in amplitude and phase. The DC-NIRS reference and sample signals are generated using electro-optic modulation which offers a cost-effective, integrable solution while providing high adaptability to the interrogated medium.

The decisions made by social robots while they fulfill their tasks have a strong influence on their performance. In these contexts, autonomous social robots must exhibit adaptive and social-based behavior to make appropriate decisions and operate correctly in complex and dynamic scenarios. This paper presents a Decision-Making System for social robots working on long-term interactions like cognitive stimulation or entertainment.

Disruptions to left atrial (LA) blood flow, such as those caused by atrial fibrillation (AF), can lead to thrombosis in the left atrial appendage (LAA) and an increased risk of systemic embolism. LA hemodynamics are influenced by various factors, including LA anatomy and function, and pulmonary vein (PV) inflow conditions. In particular, the PV flow split can vary significantly among and within patients depending on multiple factors.

The Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) encompasses heterogeneous clusters of species that have been associated with nosocomial outbreaks. These species may have different acquired antimicrobial resistance and virulence mechanisms, and their identification is challenging. This study aims to develop predictive models based on matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) profiles and machine learning for species-level identification.

The development of a datalogger for identifying Energy Poverty (EP) using thermal comfort monitoring is described in this work. There is not a uniform definition of EP, and no global recommendations indicating the thermal comfort characteristics that should be utilized to identify EP. Most Internet of Things (IoT)-based systems designed for EP identification measure energy consumptions (electricity and gas).
