Background: Physical exercise is crucial in type 2 diabetes management (T2D), and training in the aquatic environment seems to be a promising alternative due to its physical properties and metabolic, functional, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular benefits. Research on combined training in aquatic and dry-land training environments is scarce, especially in long-term interventions. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effects of combined training in both environments on health outcomes related to the management of T2D patients.

To compare the acute effects of aquatic walking/running versus dry-land walking/running on blood glucose and plasma renin activity (PRA) in individuals with type 2 diabetes, participants with type 2 diabetes performed deep-water or dry-land walking and/or running sessions in a swimming pool or on an athletics track, respectively. Both sessions comprised seven blocks of 3 min at 85-90% of the heart rate deflection point (HRDP), interspersed with 2 min at <85% HRDP, totaling 35 min, with a 48 h interval between sessions. PRA and blood glucose were assessed before and immediately after the sessions.

The aim of the study was to investigate how phase angle (PhA) is associated with subtotal and lumbar spine bone mineral density [BMD], lean soft tissue mass [LSTM], total body fat mass, android and gynoid in children and adolescents with HIV according to sex. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Florianópolis, Brazil, involving 64 children and adolescents vertically transmitted with HIV. Resistance and reactance values were obtained using bioelectrical impedance analysis, and PhA was subsequently calculated.

The aims of this study were to identify cross-sectional dietary patterns (DPs) in a representative sample of 7-10-year-old schoolchildren, to examine how scores for these DPs tracked over a time period of five years (from age 7-10 years to 12-15 years), and to investigate longitudinal associations between changes in DPs scores and changes in BMI (Body Mass Index) z-scores. Children aged 7-10-years were examined in 2007 ( = 1158) and a subset of the sample participated in a follow-up in 2012 ( = 458). Factor analysis (FA) was applied to derive DPs at baseline.

A polysaccharide (Sarg) extracted from the brown marine alga Sargassum stenophyllum was studied for its antivasculogenic effects in both in vivo and in vitro assays, as well as for its capacity to modify embryonic morphogenetic processes endogenously regulated by bFGF, a well-known angiogenic stimulator. The antivasculogenic activity of Sarg (6-1500 microg/implant) was evaluated in a chick yolk sac membrane assay and the embryonic morphogenesis was measured as the percentage cephalic length. Sarg alone (96-1500 microg/implant) and co-administered with hydrocortisone (HC; 156 microg/implant) decreased the vitelline vessel number by 23-100% and 54-100% respectively.

Antiangiogenic and antitumoral properties of a polysaccharide isolated from the seaweed Sargassum stenophyllum.

The potential antiangiogenic and antitumoral properties of SargA, a polysaccharide extracted from the brown marine alga Sargassum stenophyllum, were studied in assays carried out in chick embryos and mice. Gelfoam plugs containing SargA (2-1500 microg/plug) implanted in vivo into fertilized 6-day-old chicken eggs induced dose-related antiangiogenic activity in the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). By day 8, the highest dose of SargA alone decreased the vessel number in the CAM by 64%, but coadministered with hydrocortisone (156 microg/plug, which alone caused 30% inhibition) failed to potentiate its antiangiogenic effect.
