SOAT1 missense variant in two cats with sebaceous gland dysplasia.

Mol Genet Genomics

July 2023

Institute of Genetics, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, Bremgartenstrasse 109a, 3001, Bern, Switzerland.

Spontaneously arisen hereditary diseases in domestic animals provide an excellent opportunity to study the physiological functions of the altered genes. We investigated two 4-month-old sibling domestic short haired kittens with dry dark debris around the eyes, nose, and ears, dark crusting on the legs and a thin poor hair coat. Skin biopsies revealed abnormal sebaceous gland morphology with lack of normal sebocyte arrangement and differentiation.

Article Synopsis
  • A 3-month-old Chinese shar-pei puppy with ichthyosis displayed symptoms like scaling, hair loss, and issues with its footpads, indicating a skin condition.
  • Genetic analysis revealed a specific 3 bp deletion in the KRT1 gene of the puppy that likely affects protein function, but the puppy's parents exhibited no symptoms.
  • This study is significant as it documents the first known case of KRT1-related non-epidermolytic ichthyosis in domestic animals, suggesting a direct link between the genetic variant and the puppy's condition.

Cell adhesion molecules E-cadherin and CADM1 are differently expressed in canine inflammatory mammary cancer.

Res Vet Sci

December 2022

Department of Animal Medicine, Surgery and Pathology, Veterinary Medicine School, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain. Electronic address:

Human inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and canine inflammatory mammary cancer (IMC) are the most aggressive and lethal types of mammary tumors with specific characteristics such as exacerbated angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis and lymphangiotropism. E-cadherin expression is another specific feature of IBC not previously studied in canine IMC. In this study, the expression of E-cadherin and CADM1 (Cell Adhesion molecule 1) and their possible role as key molecules involved in the pathogenesis of IMC were immunohistochemically analyzed in 19 canine IMC and 15 grade III non-IMC cases.

Background: Over half a million newborn deaths are attributed to intrapartum related events annually, the majority of which occur in low resource settings. While progress has been made in reducing the burden of asphyxia, novel approaches may need to be considered to further decrease rates of newborn mortality. Administration of intravenous, intraosseous or endotracheal epinephrine is recommended by the Newborn Resuscitation Program (NRP) with sustained bradycardia at birth.

Management of , the causal agent of brown rot blossom blight in almond (), relies heavily on the use of chemical fungicides during bloom. However, chemical fungicides can have nontarget effects on beneficial arthropods, including pollinators, and select for resistance in the pathogen of concern. Almond yield is heavily reliant on successful pollination by healthy honey bees (); thus, identifying sustainable, effective, and pollinator-friendly control methods for blossom blight during bloom is desirable.

Secretary, California Association of Colleges of Nursing, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing University California Davis, Secretary 2020-2022 California Association of Colleges of Nursing, United States of America. Electronic address:

The California Association of Colleges of Nursing (CACN), representing California's baccalaureate and higher degree nursing education programs, has raised concerns for over two-years about the number, relevance, and legitimacy of nursing education regulations. Formal CACN letters to state regulators did not affect change. While California nursing education regulations require 75% direct patient contact for all clinical courses, meeting this requirement became impossible as clinical agencies closed to nursing students during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rationale: Oxygen (δ O) and carbon (δ C) isotope analysis of foraminifera and other CaCO samples has been a key technique for paleoceanographical and paleoclimatological research for more than 60 years. There is ongoing demand for the analysis of ever smaller CaCO samples, driven, for example, by the desire to analyse single specimen planktic foraminifera, or small samples of tooth enamel.

Methods: We present a continuous-flow mass spectrometric technique that uses cryo-focusing of sample CO to analyse CaCO samples in a weight range between 10 and 3 μg.

Exit Gluten-Free and Enter Low FODMAPs: A Novel Dietary Strategy to Reduce Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Athletes.

Sports Med

February 2019

Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, University California Davis, Davis, CA, 95616, USA.

Exercise-associated physiological disturbances alter gastrointestinal function and integrity. These alterations may increase susceptibility to dietary triggers, namely gluten and a family of short-chain carbohydrates known as FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols). A recent surge in the popularity of gluten-free diets (GFDs) among athletes without celiac disease has been exacerbated by unsubstantiated commercial health claims and high-profile athletes citing this diet to be the secret to their success.
