Genetic selection for growth rate has often been related with potential negative effects on various reproductive traits across different species. Using rabbit as a model, this study has evaluated for the first time how genetic selection for growth rate has affected feed efficiency, resource allocation, blood traits, reproductive performance and survival during five reproductive cycles in rabbit does. To this end, we used 88 reproductive rabbit females from two vitrified and rederived populations of the same paternal line, differing only in 18 generations of genetic selection for growth rate (n = 44 for R19V and n = 44 for RV37V).

In the field of computational chemistry, computer models are quickly and cheaply constructed to predict toxicology hazards and results, with no need for test material or animals as these computational predictions are often based on physicochemical properties of chemical structures. Multiple methodologies are employed to support in silico assessments based on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). This review introduces the development of computational toxicology, focusing on ML and DL and emphasizing their importance in the field of toxicology.

Hamstring muscle injuries are common in basketball and result in long periods of inactivity. To reduce their incidence, preventive protocols, including proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretches, have been proposed. The aim of this study is to compare the short-term effects of PNF and PNF + neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on hamstring extensibility and, secondarily, on vertical jump capacity in young basketball players.

Department of Animal Production and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Experimental Sciences, Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir, Valencia, Spain.

Vector-borne diseases represent various sicknesses that are increasingly significant in human and veterinary health. Among the zoonotic agents transmitted by ticks, infections caused by the intracellular pathogens from the Anaplasmataceae family and piroplasmids (Babesia/Theileria spp.) are particularly notable due to the substantial economic losses they cause in the livestock sector.

Background: Endoprosthetic knee replacement using megaprostheses has become a common strategy for preserving joint function in patients with distal femur tumors. While existing literature has primarily focused on surgical techniques, complications, and implants, recent improvements in patient survival rates have sparked increased interest in the long-term functional outcomes associated with this treatment.

Methods: This case-control study evaluated functional outcomes-Timed Up and Go (TUG), 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), knee flexor and extensor muscle strength, and sagittal knee range of motion-and health-related quality of life (SF-36) between patients with distal femoral megaprostheses (n = 31) and healthy controls (n = 48).

Sympathetic nervous system (SNS), endothelin 1 (ET-1) and angiotensin II (Ang II) are involved in the pathophysiology of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Valproic acid (VPA) is under study for the treatment against AMI due to its beneficial cardiac effects. However, the vascular effects of VPA on the activation of the SNS, ET-1 and Ang II after AMI are not fully studied.

The continuing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants challenges the durability of existing spike (S)-based COVID-19 vaccines. We hypothesized that vaccines composed of both S and nucleocapsid (N) antigens would increase the durability of protection by strengthening and broadening cellular immunity compared with S-based vaccines. To test this, we examined the immunogenicity and efficacy of wild-type SARS-CoV-2 S- and N-based DNA vaccines administered individually or together to K18-hACE2 mice.

Seasonal-calving pasture-based systems characterize Irish dairy production. During the dry period, cows are housed and offered predominantly grass silage, providing unique transition cow management opportunities. This study aimed to describe transition period disease incidence and management strategies reported by farmers, and to evaluate their associations with herd size and calving pattern to inform and guide research activities and national advisory.

Background: It has been hypothesized that insulin resistance is pivotal in mediating amyloid and tau dysregulations in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Objective: To investigate the impact of different antidiabetic agents, their daily dosage intake, and treatment duration on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AD biomarkers among patients with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: This cross-sectional study selected patients between 50 and 80 years with diabetes and CSF AD biomarkers screened between 2017 and 2023 in the VALCODIS Cohort.

Maternal smoking, including both traditional cigarettes and electronic ones, is a significant modifiable risk factor associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, especially in twin pregnancies. This narrative review aims to explore the impact of maternal smoking on obstetric and neonatal outcomes in twin pregnancies, which inherently carry a higher risk of complications. A literature search was conducted using the PubMed and EMBASE databases, selecting studies published between January 1994 and October 2024.

The Effect of the Combination of Two Postbiotics on Anxiety-like Behavior in Animal Models.

Cells

December 2024

Cell Biology Area, Molecular Biology Department, Campus de Vegazana s/n, Universidad de León, 24071 León, Spain.

With increasing evidence showing the connections between the microbiome, neurophysiology, and behavior, our research endeavors to investigate whether the consumption of a combination of two postbiotics with antioxidant effects can affect behavior regulation in model species. Here, we worked with a combination (1:1 ratio) of heat-treated subsp. ES1 (CECT7347) and BPL15 (CECT8361) as a dietary supplement.

The gut microbiota of the pig is being increasingly studied due to its implications for host homeostasis and the importance of the pig as a meat source and biomedical model of human diseases. However, most studies comparing the microbiome between different breeds do not consider the influence of maternal environment during the colonization of the microbiota. The aim of the present study was to compare the gut microbiota during postnatal growth between two pig genotypes (purebred Iberian vs.

Improved embryo recovery through increased flushing media volume and the impact on unintended pregnancies in a single subject donor mare.

J Equine Vet Sci

November 2024

Equine Fertility Group, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera, CEU Universities, Carrer Lluís Vives 1, Alfara del Patriarca, Valencia 46115, Spain.

The case report discusses the implications of using different volumes of flushing media during embryo flushing (EF) procedures in a single donor mare that experienced multiple unintended pregnancies following negative EF outcomes. The study involved two sets of EF experiments over two years on a non-lactating Spanish purebred mare. The initial experiments (group 1, n = 6) used 1 L of flushing medium (Ringer´s Lactate), and subsequent tests (group 2, n = 5) increased the volume to 2 L, to assess whether a larger volume could enhance embryo recovery rates.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how cocoa polyphenol extract (CPE) affects myogenic differentiation in C2C12 murine myoblasts exposed to hydrogen peroxide (HO), showing that HO reduces cell viability and damages mitochondria.
  • - Treatment with CPE prior to HO exposure helps protect myoblasts from oxidative damage, improves the number and function of mitochondria, and supports better cell survival and differentiation over time.
  • - Results suggest that CPE supplementation not only preserves mitochondrial health but also aids in maintaining the ability of damaged myoblasts to differentiate, highlighting potential benefits for nutritional interventions.
