Studying the ecology of photosynthetic microeukaryotes and prokaryotic cyanobacterial communities requires molecular tools to complement morphological observations. These tools rely on specific genetic markers and require the development of specialised databases to achieve taxonomic assignment. We set up a reference database, called µgreen-db, for the 23S rRNA gene.

Acute leukemia during pregnancy is rare (1 for 100000 pregnancies). The association of arsenic trioxide (ATO) and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is known as the best therapy in standard-risk acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). We describe the first case of a pregnancy with ATRA and ATO reported in the literature.

A high level of variability in the capacity of visually impaired children to accurately identify tactile images is reported in the literature, with on average rather low percentages of correct naming responses. However, most of these studies used raised-line drawings as stimuli to be explored and named. The present experiment investigated whether blind children of 3 to 8 years of age would demonstrate a satisfactory ability to name the elements making up tactile images when tested in an experimental setting similar to their natural reading conditions.

Introduction: Perioperative chemotherapy is the standard strategy for localized gastric cancers. Nevertheless, this strategy seems to be inefficient, if not deleterious, for patients with tumors harboring microsatellite instability (MSI) and/or mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR), a tumor phenotype predictive for the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICKi).

Aim: The GERCOR NEONIPIGA single-arm phase II study (NCT04006262; EUDRACT 2018-004712-22) aims at evaluating the efficacy of a peri-operative strategy with nivolumab and ipilimumab in neoadjuvant setting, then nivolumab alone after surgery for patients with resectable MSI/dMMR gastric cancer.

March 2020

Department of Hepato-Gastroenterology, Inserm U954, University Hospital of Nancy-Brabois, Université Henri Poincaré, 1, Allée du Morvan, 54511, Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, France.

Despite increasing use of immunosuppressants and anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents, approximately half of Crohn's disease (CD) patients still require surgery within 10 years after diagnosis. Surgery is not curative as postoperative relapse is very frequent in the absence of prophylactic treatment. Screening for known risk factors for postoperative recurrence allows patients to be stratified in order to consider appropriate therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • A study on 88 hospitalized Crohn's disease patients found that altered body composition, specifically sarcopenia and visceral obesity, is common but often goes undetected by BMI assessments.
  • Sarcopenia was identified in 58% of patients; of these, many had normal or high BMI, yet they experienced significantly more complications like abscesses and surgeries compared to non-sarcopenic patients.
  • The research concluded that both sarcopenia and visceral obesity are linked to worse clinical outcomes in Crohn's disease, highlighting the limitations of traditional nutritional assessments like BMI.

Self-biases are well described in adults but remain poorly understood in children. Here, we investigated in 6-10 year-old children (N = 132) the self-prioritization effect (SPE), a self-bias which reflects, in adults, the perceptual advantage for stimuli arbitrarily associated with the self as compared to those associated with other persons. We designed a child-friendly adaptation of a paradigm originally introduced in adults by Sui, He, and Humphreys (2012) in order to test whether the SPE also occurs in children and if so, to determine its evolution with age.

The local immune response during Echinococcus granulosus growth in a quantitative hepatic experimental model.

Sci Rep

December 2019

State Key Laboratory of Pathogenesis, Prevention, Treatment of High Incidence Diseases in Central Asia, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, Urumqi, Xinjiang, China.

The local immune mechanisms responsible for the establishment and development of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto infection in the liver, have been little explored. We developed a suitable experimental model that mimics naturally infected livers using portal injection of protoscoleces. Opposite to Echinococcus multilocularis infection which is dose-dependent, fully mature hydatid cysts can be established in the liver whatever the injection dose; although most of the infection sites were seen at the establishment phase as inflammatory granulomas associated with fibrosis, they never matured into cysts.

Ecdysteroids are critically important for the formation of the insect exoskeleton. Cholesterol is a precursor of ecdysone and its active form 20-hydroxyecdysone, but some steps in the ecdysteroid biosynthesis pathway remain unknown. An essential requirement of glutathione (GSH) transferase GSTE14 in ecdysteroid biosynthesis has been established in Drosophila melanogaster, but its function is entirely unknown.

Stressors experience early in life by animals may have carry over impacts on life-traits over the life cycle. Accelerated telomere attrition induced by stress during development and growth could play a role in such delayed effects. Among stressors, exposure to chemicals may modify telomere dynamic but, to date, the trends evidenced between exposure and telomere shortening remains inconsistent.

Environmental mitigation hierarchy and biodiversity offsets revisited through habitat connectivity modelling.

J Environ Manage

February 2020

Univ. Grenoble Alpes, Irstea, UR LESSEM, 2, rue de la papeterie, BP 76, F-38402, Saint-Martin-d'Hères Cedex, France.

Biodiversity loss is accelerating because of unceasing human activity and land clearing for development projects (urbanisation, transport infrastructure, mining and quarrying …). Environmental policy-makers and managers in different countries worldwide have proposed the mitigation hierarchy to ensure the goal of "no net loss (NNL) of biodiversity" and have included this principle in environmental impact assessment processes. However, spatial configuration is hardly ever taken into account in the mitigation hierarchy even though it would greatly benefit from recent developments in habitat connectivity modelling incorporating landscape graphs.
