Background: Studies have shown disparate results on the consequences of morphine use in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). No study has evaluated alternative treatments that could be at least non-inferior to morphine without its potentially damaging consequences for myocardial function and platelet reactivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether nitrous oxide/oxygen plus intravenous acetaminophen (NOO-A) is non-inferior to morphine to control chest pain in STEMI patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how both existing and newly diagnosed hypertension affects cognitive abilities in middle-aged people over a decade, while also exploring the role of antihypertensive medications.
  • At the 10-year follow-up, participants with existing hypertension demonstrated significantly lower cognitive performance compared to those without hypertension, with similar results seen in those who developed hypertension during the study.
  • The findings highlight the negative impact of both untreated and poorly controlled hypertension on cognitive function, suggesting that managing blood pressure may help protect brain health in middle-aged individuals.

The efficacy and safety of protein-restricted diets in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is still a matter of debate. However, several studies have clearly demonstrated the beneficial effects of such diets on the outcome of patients with stage 3-4 CKD. This point has been confirmed by 4 recent studies.

Background: The consequences of a supplemented very-low-protein diet remain a matter of debate with regard to patient outcome before or after the onset of renal replacement therapy.

Objective: We evaluated the long-term clinical outcome during maintenance dialysis and/or transplantation in patients who previously received a supplemented very-low-protein diet.

Design: We assessed the outcome of 203 patients who received a supplemented very-low-protein diet for >3 mo (inclusion period: 1985-2000) and started dialysis after a mean diet duration of 33.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) a chlorodihydro-isocoumarin linked through an amide bond to phenylalanine, is a mycotoxin found as a contaminant in foodstuffs and shown to be nephrotoxic, teratogenic, immunosuppressive, genotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic in rodents. Ochratoxin A is known to induce teratogenic effects in neonates (rats and mice) exposed in utero, characterised by microcephaly and modification of the brain levels of free amino acids. Since OTA has been found to accumulate in the brain according to the duration of exposure to doses in the range of natural contamination of feedstuffs, experiments were designed to determine more precisely the structural target of OTA in the brain.

Laryngomucocele as an unusual late complication of subtotal laryngectomy. Case report.

Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol

August 1998

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Pellegrin Hospital, University Bordeaux II, France.

We report an unusual case of laryngomucocele occurring after subtotal laryngectomy. Laryngoceles generally have a congenital origin in a long-preexisting saccule, and their association with laryngeal carcinoma is well known. Laryngocele is usually favored by the increase of intraglottic pressure caused by the laryngeal carcinoma.

Dietary management of cardiovascular diseases.

Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids

October 1997

INSERM, Unit 330, University Bordeaux II, France.

Since cholesterol was discovered in atherosclerotic plaques and was able, when given in diet, to induce the same type of lesions in animals, the aim of previous dietary changes was to reduce serum cholesterol as much as possible. For this purpose, the intake of saturated fats was decreased and replaced by linoleic acid, the main fatty acid lowering cholesterol. Nevertheless, this type of diet in primary or secondary prevention did not succeed in reducing satisfactorily cardiovascular and total mortality unless the intake of fish (DART and Hjermann trials) i.

The case presented here is a 27-year-old patient who was born with common atrium and left superior vena cava (LSVC). Construction of interatrial septum and intraatrial baffle with pericardium was performed 16 years ago. Radionuclide angiocardiography (RAC) showed that a substantial amount of blood flow from the LSVC was directed to the inferior vena cava through the hemiazygos vein (HAV).
