Global knowledge flows and the psychiatric encounter in Indonesia.

In this article, we examine the clinical encounters of people diagnosed with a severe mental illness (SMI). Drawing on more than 1-year of ethnographic research and interviews in Indonesia, we show that instances of moral self-reflection occurring in the process of acquiring and appropriating clinical insight emerge at the intersection of heterogeneous discursive regimes. When biomedical notions of health and illness dominate these discourses, they reimagine pre-existing notions about spirituality and religion.

Both Kernberg's model of personality organization and the alternative model for personality disorders (AMPD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5th edition provide a multidimensional framework for assessing personality pathology, while having a dual focus on general and specific personality pathology. The present study was the first to investigate the empirical convergence between measures of personality organization and the AMPD (personality functioning and pathological personality traits), considering general and specific personality pathology. A mixed clinical sample completed self-reports for personality organization, personality functioning and pathological personality traits, as well as an interview for personality organization.

Allopregnanolone (AlloP) is an example of neuroactive steroids (NAS), which is a potent allosteric activator of the γ-aminobutyric acid A (GABA) receptor. The mechanisms underlying the biological activity of AlloP and other NAS are only partially understood. Here, we present intrinsically fluorescent analogs of AlloP (MQ-323) and its 3β-epimer, epi-allopregnanolone (E-AlloP) (YX-11), and show, by a combination of spectroscopic and computational studies, that these analogs mimic the membrane properties of AlloP and E-AlloP very well.

We analyzed spin polarization dynamics in a two-dimensional system of spin 1/2 charged particles with spin-orbit interaction in perpendicular magnetic field in the presence of external noise. It was shown that spin polarization reveals quantum oscillations, collapses, and revivals. The hierarchy of time scales corresponding to quantum oscillations, collapses, and revivals was identified and analyzed.

We study the impact of bursts on spike statistics and neural signal transmission. We propose a stochastic burst algorithm that is applied to a burst-free spike train and adds a random number of temporally-jittered burst spikes to each spike. This simple algorithm ignores any possible stimulus-dependence of bursting but allows to relate spectra and signal-transmission characteristics of burst-free and burst-endowed spike trains.
