Psoriasis improves when IL-17 is blocked. Anti-TNF drugs reduce the IL-17 signaling pathway, and anti-IL-17 drugs are being developed to treat moderate-to-severe psoriasis. We analyzed three SNPs in IL-17A (rs2275913 and rs10484879) and IL-17F (rs763780) to look for an association with psoriasis and/or with response to anti-TNF drugs or ustekinumab.

Bioequivalence studies of drugs with a long half-life require long periods of time for pharmacokinetic sampling. The latest update of the European guideline allows the area under the curve (AUC) truncated at 72 hr to be used as an alternative to AUC0-t as the primary parameter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of truncating the AUC at 48, 24 and 12 hr on the acceptance of the bioequivalence criterion as compared with truncation at 72 hr in bioequivalence trials.

We characterized the ionic currents underlying the cellular excitability and the Ca(2+) -channel subtypes involved in action potential (AP) firing of rat adrenal chromaffin cells (RCCs) preserved in their natural environment, the adrenal gland slices, through the perforated patch-clamp recording technique. RCCs prepared from adrenal slices exhibit a resting potential of -54 mV, firing spontaneous APs (2-3 spikes/s) generated by the opening of Na(+) and Ca(2+) -channels, and terminated by the activation of voltage and Ca(2+) -activated K(+) -channels (BK). Ca(2+) influx via L-type Ca(2+) -channels is involved in reaching threshold potential for AP firing, and is responsible for activation of BK-channels contributing to AP-repolarization and afterhyperpolarization, whereas P/Q-type Ca(2+) -channels are involved only in the repolarization phase.

One of the major components of some geraniums is geraniin, described by its discoverer as crystallizable tannin, well known as an excellent antioxidant, and also found in fruits such as pomegranate. Recently, natural antioxidants have attracted great attention from consumers over the world due to their lower toxicity than synthetics. But geraniin is not a stable compound, and also is difficult to obtain, that is why in the present study we obtained acetonylgeraniin from Geranium schideanum (Gs), a stable acetone condensate of geraniin.

Until about 20 years ago, sperm assessment in the laboratory was focused on motility, morphology and acrosomal integrity. Then came the gradual realisation that, because the main objective of a spermatozoon is to deliver an intact genetic payload of DNA to the egg, being able to check DNA quality of spermatozoa would be equally important, if not more so. Research over the last two decades has therefore led to the development of several techniques for reliably detecting DNA strand breaks, and the more recent focus has been directed towards understanding the fertility implications of DNA damage.

Objective: To assess the concordance between patients' preferred role in clinical decision-making and the role they usually experience in their psychiatric consultations and to analyze the influence of socio-demographic, clinical and personality characteristics on patients' preferences.

Methods: 677 consecutive psychiatric outpatients were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey and 507 accepted. Patients completed Control Preference Scale twice consecutively before consultation, one for their preferences of participation and another for the style they usually experienced until then, and locus of control and self-efficacy scales.

The development of Arabidopsis thaliana was dramatically altered within few hours following boron (B) deprivation. This effect was particularly evident in the apical root meristem. The essentiality of boron in plants has been clearly linked to its structural role in the cell wall, however the diversity and rapidity alterations of plant organogenesis when the micronutrient is absent suggest that B deficiency could also affect gene regulation during plant development.

In particular, it is focused on advanced characterization of the relative amount of TO accumulated within the fouling layers formed on the membranes.

Motivation: Structural information of macromolecular complexes provides key insights into the way they carry out their biological functions. Achieving high-resolution structural details with electron microscopy requires the identification of a large number (up to hundreds of thousands) of single particles from electron micrographs, which is a laborious task if it has to be manually done and constitutes a hurdle towards high-throughput. Automatic particle selection in micrographs is far from being settled and new and more robust algorithms are required to reduce the number of false positives and false negatives.

In the present study, porous silicon with ~100 nm in pore diameter, so-called medium-sized pores, was used as template electrode for gold electrodeposition. The role of postsynaptic nicotinic receptors for acetylcholine (nAChRs) in mediating fast neurotransmission processes in the CNS is controversial. Here we have studied the modulation of synaptic transmission by an agonist (choline) and an allosteric modulator (5-OH-indole) of alpha7 nAChRs in rat hippocampal neuronal cultures. Choline evoked a fast inactivating inward current, causing neuron depolarization and action potential discharge, thereby enhancing the spontaneous postsynaptic current activity (sPSCs).

In this work, we have analysed the tendency of two beta-carboline derivatives, harmane and norharmane, in the formation of hydrogen bonds. We obtained the (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of different mixtures of these derivatives with acetic acid (AcOH) in CDCl(3). A cyclic 1:3 complex is proposed between harmane and AcOH, while a 1:2 complex is proposed for norharmane.

We have used the streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus pregnant rat as a model of maternal nonthyroidal illness. We measured the effects of different degrees of diabetes mellitus on maternal body weight, the outcome of pregnancy, circulating glucose, insulin, T4, T3, rT3, and TSH in mother and fetus, T4 and T3 in maternal and fetal tissues, and iodothyronine deiodinases in liver, lung, and brain. All of the changes in thyroid hormone status typical of nonthyroidal illnesses were observed in the mothers and were related to the degree of the metabolic imbalances.
