Methods Mol Biol

October 2024

Department of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and The RNA Institute, University at Albany, Albany, NY, USA.

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell physiology understanding has advanced very rapidly in the past few years with incredible improvements in long-read sequencing, improved resolution, and increased computational power. Multiple parental lines have been sequenced and the resultant pan-genome can be leveraged to increase our understanding of the diverse pathways CHO cells can take to get high-productivity phenotypes. The same improvements in workflows have complemented transcriptomic studies.

Associations of exposure to PM and its compounds with carotid intima-media thickness among middle-aged adults.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Department of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University at Albany, State University of New York, Rensselaer, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM), particularly black carbon (BC), is linked to an increased thickness of carotid arteries, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
  • The study analyzed data from 3,257 participants, examining how one-year exposure to various PM compounds affects carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) through linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression models.
  • Results indicated a significant correlation between higher BC exposure and increased cIMT, suggesting that specific PM compounds like BC may be better indicators of adverse cardiovascular health than just overall PM mass.

Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), a plasticizer found in a wide range of consumer products including vinyl flooring, carpet backing, food packaging, personal care products, and children's toys, is an endocrine-disrupting chemical linked to impaired reproduction and development in humans. Despite evidence that BBP exposure perturbs the integrity of male and female gametes, its direct effect on early meiotic events is understudied. Here, using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, we show that BBP exposure elicits a non-monotonic dose response on the rate of X-chromosome nondisjunction measured using a high-throughput screening platform.

Article Synopsis
  • Research has focused on opioid use disorder (OUD) in older adults (65+), but the impact of migration between metro and nonmetropolitan areas on OUD risk is still not well understood.
  • The study uses fixed-effects modeling on data from older Medicare beneficiaries who migrated between 2013 and 2018, revealing that those who moved had a higher risk of developing OUD.
  • The findings support the drift hypothesis more strongly, suggesting that individuals prone to OUD are more likely to migrate to areas that increase their risk, especially when moving from urban to rural settings.

Electronic waste (e-waste) poses significant environmental and health risks in Thailand due to both domestic production and international imports. A notable portion of this waste is processed in small-scale, community-based workshops, often located in poorer regions, where safety regulations are improperly enforced or entirely ignored. This study focuses on the Kalasin province in Northern Thailand, a region with numerous such workshops, where no comprehensive analysis of exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and dechlorane plus (DP) has been conducted.

Can micro-expressions be used as a biomarker for autism spectrum disorder?

Front Neuroinform

October 2024

Department of Computer Science, University at Albany, Albany, NY, United States.

Introduction: Early and accurate diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is crucial for effective intervention, yet it remains a significant challenge due to its complexity and variability. Micro-expressions are rapid, involuntary facial movements indicative of underlying emotional states. It is unknown whether micro-expression can serve as a valid bio-marker for ASD diagnosis.

Objective: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is diagnosed by a combination of three features: hyperandrogenism (biochemical and/or clinical), ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian morphology, usually detected by ultrasonography. Our study aimed to determine the need for androgen measurements by using hirsutism to establish hyperandrogenism for diagnosing PCOS in a medically unbiased population.

Materials And Methods: We utilized a pre-existing cohort of unselected (medically unbiased) females aged 18-45 years.

Background: Traditional treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often show limited success with high dropout. Ketamine, an -methyl-D-aspartate antagonist known for rapid antidepressant effects, has decreased PTSD symptoms in some studies but not in others. Administering ketamine in ways that parallel psychedelic-assisted treatments-including preparatory, integration, sensory immersion, and psychotherapy sessions-could decrease PTSD symptoms meaningfully.

In this work, we analyzed the electrophoretic behavior of a double crossover (DX) DNA motif in various counter ions. The influence of the type and concentration of counter ions on electrophoretic behavior is different for the DX motif compared to a duplex of the same molecular weight. Higher concentrations of divalent ions Mg and Ca in the gel and running buffer reduce the electrophoretic migration of the DX motif.

JAMA Netw Open

October 2024

Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in China to explore the relationship between maternal serum folate levels during early to midpregnancy and the risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in offspring, amid ongoing debates about folate supplementation.
  • The research involved matching 129 cases of CHD with 516 controls based on maternal age, analyzing data from serum levels of folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine measured around 16 weeks of gestation.
  • Results indicated a U-shaped correlation between maternal folate and CHD risk, where both low and high levels of folate were associated with increased odds of CHD, suggesting potential exacerbating effects from vitamin B12 deficiency or elevated homocysteine levels.

p53motifDB: integration of genomic information and tumor suppressor p53 binding motifs.

bioRxiv

September 2024

Department of Biological Sciences and The RNA Institute, University at Albany, State University of New York, Albany, NY 12222.

The tumor suppressor gene encodes the DNA binding transcription factor p53 and is one of the most commonly mutated genes in human cancer. Tumor suppressor activity requires binding of p53 to its DNA response elements and subsequent transcriptional activation of a diverse set of target genes. Despite decades of close study, the logic underlying p53 interactions with its numerous potential genomic binding sites and target genes is not yet fully understood.
