Introduction: Asthma and bronchiectasis appear to be two related diseases and in their complex inflammatory interaction, the cysteinyl leukotriene/cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 1 (cysLT/cysLTR1) axis appears to play an important role given its involvement also in the neutrophilic pathway. To our knowledge, few studies have been conducted so far to evaluate the role of the leukotriene cysLT/cysLTr1 axis in the management of clinical and inflammatory outcomes within a population of patients with severe asthma and bronchiectasis. The aim of our study was to verify in this population the effect of leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) therapy in clinical and inflammatory control before and after 6 months of introduction of biologic therapy.

Spinal arteriovenous shunts (sAVSs) are an uncommon disease, constituting 3 to 4% of intradural lesions; 70% of these lesions are spinal arteriovenous fistulas (sAVFs), whereas spinal arteriovenous malformations (sAVMs) are rarer. Both share the problem of their classification due to the heterogeneity of their angioarchitecture. The aim of this study is to report a series of sAVSs treated in the neurosurgery department of the Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara during the 2018-2020 period and to present an overview of the current literature on sAVS classification.

Assessment of body composition: Intrinsic methodological limitations and statistical pitfalls.

Nutrition

October 2022

Section of Medical Statistics, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Human Oncology, University of Bari Aldo Moro, Medical School, Bari, Italy.

Evaluation of body composition (BC) is crucial for an adequate assessment of nutritional status and its alterations, to ensure the optimal tailoring of nutritional therapies during several pathologic conditions. The need for feasible and reliable methods for BC measurement, which could be applied either in healthcare across the lifespan as well as in clinical research and epidemiologic studies, has led to the development of various techniques. Unfortunately, they have not always produced equivalent results due to the fact that they are based on completely different principles or suffer intrinsic biases related to specific conditions.

Pharmacol Res

August 2022

IRCCS Istituto Tumori Giovanni Paolo II, V.le O. Flacco, 65, 70124 Bari, Italy. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The V600E mutation in the BRAF gene in metastatic melanoma leads to increased activation of Erk1/2 and a better response to combinations of BRAFi (BRAF inhibitors) and MEKi (MEK inhibitors).
  • A rare tandem mutation involving BRAF, specifically V600 and K601, results in a different drug response and shows decreased sensitivity to the BRAFi Vemurafenib when tested in patient-derived organoids (PDOs).
  • By inhibiting Notch signaling alongside BRAFi and MEKi treatment, researchers observed an improved antitumor response in these specific cases, highlighting the importance of personalized treatment approaches for rare mutations in melanoma patients.

Several studies have exploited the face inversion paradigm to unveil the mechanisms underlying the processing of adult faces, showing that emotion recognition relies more on a global/configural processing for sadness and on a piecemeal/featural processing for happiness. This difference might be due to the higher biological salience of negative rather than positive emotions and consequently should be higher for infant rather than adult faces. In fact, evolution might have promoted specific adaptations aimed to prioritize the infant face by the attention system in order to foster survival during infancy, a rather long period during which the newborn depends entirely on adults.
