Nebulized aminoglycosides for ventilator-associated pneumonia: Methodological considerations and lessons from experimental studies.

Aminoglycosides are concentration-dependent antibiotics exerting a bactericidal effect when concentrations at the site of infection are equal to or greater than 5 times the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). When administered intravenously, they exhibit poor lung penetration and high systemic renal and ototoxicity, imposing to restrict their administration to 5 days. Experimental studies conducted in anesthetized and mechanically ventilated sheep and pigs provide evidence that high doses of nebulized aminoglycosides induce a rapid and potent bacterial killing in the infected lung parenchyma.

Does portal vein anatomy influence intrahepatic distribution of metastases from colorectal cancer?

Background: Other than location of the primary colorectal cancer (CRC), a few factors are known to influence the intrahepatic distribution of colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM). We aimed to assess whether the anatomy of the portal vein (PV) could influence the intrahepatic distribution of CRLM.

Patients And Methods: Patients with CRLM diagnosed between January 2018 and December 2022 at two tertiary centers were included and imaging was reviewed by two radiologists independently.

Health Planning in Times of COVID-19 in Burkina Faso: The Role of Its National Strategic Pandemic Management Committee.

Context: Presenting the COVID-19 crisis as a pandemic misleadingly implies a certain homogeneity between the regions of the Globe in terms of their burden and reactions. However, from the outset of the crisis, countries presented different epidemiological realities and sometimes adopted divergent, even opposing measures. Curiously, the heterogeneity of responses persisted as scientific evidence accumulated about COVID-19 and the strategies for dealing with it.

Idiopathic dilatation of the submandibular gland duct.

Lithiasis and stenosis may cause salivary duct dilatation due to the increased pressure in the duct upstream of the obstruction. Idiopathic dilatations, also called megaducts, with no associated increase in pressure, have only been described in the parotid gland. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of submandibular duct dilatation unrelated to lithiasis, stenosis, or an imperforate duct, to report the existence of submandibular megaducts.

Mandibular Titanium Miniplates Change the Biomechanical Behaviour of the Mandible in the Case of Facial Trauma: A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis.

Our study aimed to compare the biomechanical behaviour of mandibles with or without titanium miniplates when subjected to an impact after bone healing using a finite element model (FEM) of the human mandible. We simulated mandibular trauma on an FEM of a human mandible carrying or not two parasymphyseal miniplates and applying a concentrated force of 2000 N to four different areas, including the insertion area, the area straddling the edge of the miniplates and the adjacent bone, at a distance from the miniplates on the symphysis, and on the basilar border of the mandible below the miniplates. Then, we compared the Von Mises stress distributions between the two models.

Vaccination coverage in rural Burkina Faso under the effects of COVID-19: evidence from a panel study in eight districts.

Background: Improving infant immunization completion and promoting equitable vaccination coverage are crucial to reducing global under-5 childhood mortality. Although there have been hypotheses that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic would decrease the delivery of health services and immunization campaigns in low- and middle-income countries, the available evidence is still inconclusive. We conducted a study in rural Burkina Faso to assess changes in vaccination coverage during the pandemic.

Mapping the EORTC QLQ-C30 onto the EQ-5D-5L index for patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria in France.

To map patient-level data collected on the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC) QLQ-C30 to EQ-5D-5L data for estimating health-state utilities in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). European cross-sectional PNH patient survey data populated regression models mapping EORTC QLQ-C30 domains (covariates: sex and baseline age) to utilities calculated with the EQ-5D-5L French value set. A genetic algorithm allowed selection of the best-fitting between a set of models with and without interaction terms.

Interpreting mismatches between linguistic and genetic patterns among speakers of Tanimuka (Eastern Tukanoan) and Yukuna (Arawakan).

Northwestern Amazonia is home to a great degree of linguistic diversity, and the human societies in that region are part of complex networks of interaction that predate the arrival of Europeans. This study investigates the population and language contact dynamics between two languages found within this region, Yukuna and Tanimuka, which belong to the Arawakan and Tukanoan language families, respectively. We use evidence from linguistics, ethnohistory, ethnography and population genetics to provide new insights into the contact dynamics between these and other human groups in NWA.

Role of Intracellular and Extracellular Annexin A1 in MIA PaCa-2 Spheroids Formation and Drug Sensitivity.

Among solid tumors, pancreatic cancer (PC) remains a leading cause of death. In PC, the protein ANXA1 has been identified as an oncogenic factor acting in an autocrine/paracrine way, and also as a component of tumor-deriving extracellular vesicles. Here, we proposed the experimental protocol to obtain spheroids from the two cell lines, wild-type (WT) and Annexin A1 (ANXA1) knock-out (KO) MIA PaCa-2, this last previously obtained through CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system.

Does abolishing user fees for family planning increase contraception use? An impact evaluation of the national policy in Burkina Faso.

Background: Unmet needs for contraception constitute a major public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. Several mechanisms have been tested to reduce the financial barrier and facilitate access to family planning services, with inconclusive results. Based on the positive impacts following the introduction of free health care for pregnant women, Burkina Faso decided to extend its national policy and abolished direct payment for family planning services.

Detection of distant metastases and distant second primary cancers in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: comparison of [F]FDG PET/MRI and [F]FDG PET/CT.

Purpose: This prospective study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of []FDG PET/MRI and PET/CT for the detection of distant metastases and distant second primary cancers in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).

Methods: A total of 103 [F]FDG PET/MRI examinations immediately followed by PET/CT were obtained in 82 consecutive patients for staging of primary HNSCC (n = 38), suspected loco-regional recurrence/follow-up (n = 41) or unknown primary HNSCC (n = 3). Histology and follow-up > 2 years formed the standard of reference.

Hydrogen Storage in Pure and Boron-Substituted Nanoporous Carbons-Numerical and Experimental Perspective.

Nanoporous carbons remain the most promising candidates for effective hydrogen storage by physisorption in currently foreseen hydrogen-based scenarios of the world's energy future. An optimal sorbent meeting the current technological requirement has not been developed yet. Here we first review the storage limitations of currently available nanoporous carbons, then we discuss possible ways to improve their storage performance.

Protecting clinical trials in cystic fibrosis during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: risks and mitigation measures.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has disrupted clinical trials worldwide. The European Cystic Fibrosis Society-Clinical Trials Network (ECFS-CTN) has tracked clinical trial disruption by surveying its 58 trial sites across 17 European countries and collated information on measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic and ensure trial continuity. Here, we present recommendations on how to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 exposure to patients and trial staff by implementing remote trial visits where possible, using home assessments, video and phone calls, electronic consent, and home delivery of study drugs.

The Cellular and Biological Impact of Extracellular Vesicles in Pancreatic Cancer.

Deciphering the interactions between tumor and stromal cells is a growing field of research to improve pancreatic cancer-associated therapies and patients' care. Indeed, while accounting for 50 to 90% of the tumor mass, many pieces of evidence reported that beyond their structural role, the non-tumoral cells composing the intra-tumoral microenvironment influence tumor cells' proliferation, metabolism, cell death and resistance to therapies, among others. Simultaneously, tumor cells can influence non-tumoral neighboring or distant cells in order to shape a tumor-supportive and immunosuppressive environment as well as influencing the formation of metastatic niches.

Heterogeneity in the Prevalence of High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Infection in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Negative and Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men in West Africa.

Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. We assessed (i) the prevalence of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection and associated factors, and (ii) the prevalence of vaccine-preventable HPV infections in MSM in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Togo.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017-2018 among MSM ≥18 years old followed in community-based clinics.
