Department of Pneumology, Institut Clinic del Tórax, Hospital Clinic of Barcelona - Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), University of Barcelona - SGR 911- Ciber de Enfermedades Respiratorias (Ciberes), Barcelona, Spain.

Aminoglycosides are concentration-dependent antibiotics exerting a bactericidal effect when concentrations at the site of infection are equal to or greater than 5 times the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). When administered intravenously, they exhibit poor lung penetration and high systemic renal and ototoxicity, imposing to restrict their administration to 5 days. Experimental studies conducted in anesthetized and mechanically ventilated sheep and pigs provide evidence that high doses of nebulized aminoglycosides induce a rapid and potent bacterial killing in the infected lung parenchyma.

Health Planning in Times of COVID-19 in Burkina Faso: The Role of Its National Strategic Pandemic Management Committee.

Community Health Equity Res Policy

May 2024

Société d'Études et de Recherches en Santé Publique, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Context: Presenting the COVID-19 crisis as a pandemic misleadingly implies a certain homogeneity between the regions of the Globe in terms of their burden and reactions. However, from the outset of the crisis, countries presented different epidemiological realities and sometimes adopted divergent, even opposing measures. Curiously, the heterogeneity of responses persisted as scientific evidence accumulated about COVID-19 and the strategies for dealing with it.

Idiopathic dilatation of the submandibular gland duct.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

May 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, APHM, Conception University Hospital, Marseille, France.

Lithiasis and stenosis may cause salivary duct dilatation due to the increased pressure in the duct upstream of the obstruction. Idiopathic dilatations, also called megaducts, with no associated increase in pressure, have only been described in the parotid gland. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of submandibular duct dilatation unrelated to lithiasis, stenosis, or an imperforate duct, to report the existence of submandibular megaducts.

Our study aimed to compare the biomechanical behaviour of mandibles with or without titanium miniplates when subjected to an impact after bone healing using a finite element model (FEM) of the human mandible. We simulated mandibular trauma on an FEM of a human mandible carrying or not two parasymphyseal miniplates and applying a concentrated force of 2000 N to four different areas, including the insertion area, the area straddling the edge of the miniplates and the adjacent bone, at a distance from the miniplates on the symphysis, and on the basilar border of the mandible below the miniplates. Then, we compared the Von Mises stress distributions between the two models.

Background: Improving infant immunization completion and promoting equitable vaccination coverage are crucial to reducing global under-5 childhood mortality. Although there have been hypotheses that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic would decrease the delivery of health services and immunization campaigns in low- and middle-income countries, the available evidence is still inconclusive. We conducted a study in rural Burkina Faso to assess changes in vaccination coverage during the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • Memories of life episodes are crucial to individual stories, but understanding how episodic memory is formed and stored is challenging in both humans and animals.
  • A study using a new task in rodents demonstrates that rats can create and remember integrated remote episodic memories, showing variations in memory content and accuracy based on their emotional ties to specific odors.
  • Advanced brain imaging revealed that activated brain networks involved in recollecting these memories reflect their nature and content, highlighting the importance of both a cortico-hippocampal network for complete recollection and an emotional network related to odors for maintaining vivid memories.

Northwestern Amazonia is home to a great degree of linguistic diversity, and the human societies in that region are part of complex networks of interaction that predate the arrival of Europeans. This study investigates the population and language contact dynamics between two languages found within this region, Yukuna and Tanimuka, which belong to the Arawakan and Tukanoan language families, respectively. We use evidence from linguistics, ethnohistory, ethnography and population genetics to provide new insights into the contact dynamics between these and other human groups in NWA.

Among solid tumors, pancreatic cancer (PC) remains a leading cause of death. In PC, the protein ANXA1 has been identified as an oncogenic factor acting in an autocrine/paracrine way, and also as a component of tumor-deriving extracellular vesicles. Here, we proposed the experimental protocol to obtain spheroids from the two cell lines, wild-type (WT) and Annexin A1 (ANXA1) knock-out (KO) MIA PaCa-2, this last previously obtained through CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system.

In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), signaling from stromal cells is implicated in metastatic progression. Tumor-stroma cross-talk is often mediated through extracellular vesicles (EVs). We previously reported that EVs derived from cancer-associated stromal fibroblasts (CAFs) that are abundant in annexin A6 (ANXA6 EVs) support tumor cell aggressiveness in PDAC.

Laboratoire de Psychologie Cognitive CNRS_UMR7290; Institute of Language, Communication and the Brain, University Aix-Marseille, Aix-Marseille, France.

Human interactions are organized in sequence, which is a key component of Levinson's 'interaction engine.' Referring back to the field where it originated, conversation analysis, we discuss its relevance within the interaction engine, before moving on to show how sequence organization is actually oriented to not only humans in social interaction, but also to non-human animals. On the basis of video-recorded encounters between baboons (, we study canonical sequences constituting openings and, within them, greetings.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. Although neuroinflammation and oxidative stress are well-recognized features of AD, their correlations with the early molecular events characterizing the pathology are not yet well clarified. Here, we characterize the role of RAGE-TXNIP axis in neuroinflammation in relation to amyloid-beta (Aβ) burden in both in vivo and in vitro models.

INSERM, U1068, Cancer Research Center of Marseille, Institut Paoli-Calmettes, CNRS, UMR7258, University Aix-Marseille, 13009 Marseille, France.

Deciphering the interactions between tumor and stromal cells is a growing field of research to improve pancreatic cancer-associated therapies and patients' care. Indeed, while accounting for 50 to 90% of the tumor mass, many pieces of evidence reported that beyond their structural role, the non-tumoral cells composing the intra-tumoral microenvironment influence tumor cells' proliferation, metabolism, cell death and resistance to therapies, among others. Simultaneously, tumor cells can influence non-tumoral neighboring or distant cells in order to shape a tumor-supportive and immunosuppressive environment as well as influencing the formation of metastatic niches.
