Laboratory of Biology, Ecology and Health, Applied Botany team. Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University Abdelmalek Essaâdi Mhannech II, Tétouan, 2121, Morocco.

Olea europaea L. is an emblematic tree plantation of the Mediterranean basin and one of the main sources of allergenic pollen. In this study, we examined variations in airborne Olea pollen season, trends and built forecast models based on multiple regression analysis over a 13-year period (2008-2019, 2022) in NW of Morocco (Tétouan), focusing on start date of pollination (SDP), end date of pollination (EDP), peak date (PD), and pre-peak pollen Integral (PPI).

Laboratory of Applied Botany, Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University Abdelmalek Essaâdi, Mhannech II, Postal Code 2121, Tétouan, Morocco.

Olea pollen is considered one of the most critical causes of respiratory allergic disease in the Mediterranean region, contributing to different symptoms in allergic sufferers. Due to the high increase in the prevalence of olive pollen caused by the expansion of cultivated areas especially in the Mediterranean region, the aim of this study was to examine the Olea pollen sampling efficiency between gravimetric and volumetric pollen traps over the period 2018-2022. Our data demonstrated that Olea pollen season start-date was generally recorded earlier with volumetric trap than shown with gravimetric method.

Poaceae pollen is one of the most widespread sources of aeroallergens in the world. The aim of this study is to build predictive models for the pollen season start day (PSsd) and peak dates of the Poaceae pollen season and thus give an overview of the climatic parameters that have the greatest influence. In Tétouan, sampling was carried out using a volumetric spore trap of the Burkard Hirst type.

The Mediterranean is one of the most biodiverse areas of the Paleartic region. Here, basing on large data sets of single copy orthologs obtained from transcriptomic data, we investigated the evolutionary history of the genus Dugesia in the Western Mediterranean area. The results corroborated that the complex paleogeological history of the region was an important driver of diversification for the genus, speciating as microplates and islands were forming.

Exposure to Essential and Toxic Elements via Consumption of , , and Mushrooms from Southern Spain and Northern Morocco.

J Fungi (Basel)

May 2022

Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences, University of Cadiz, Agrifood Campus of International Excellence (ceiA3), IVAGRO, 11510 Puerto Real, CA, Spain.

The demand and interest in mushrooms, both cultivated and wild, has increased among consumers in recent years due to a better understanding of the benefits of this food. However, the ability of wild edible mushrooms to accumulate essential and toxic elements is well documented. In this study, a total of eight metallic elements and metalloids (chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se)) were determined by ICP-MS in five wild edible mushroom species (, , , and ) collected in southern Spain and northern Morocco.

Color indices are important quality traits that define the consumer visual acceptance and agroindustrial preferences. Little is known regarding these properties in the commercial almond cultivars grown in Morocco. This work aimed at investigating kernel color indices in five cultivars, namely, "Fournat de Brézenaud," "Tuono," "Ferragnès," "Ferraduel," and "Marcona.

Article Synopsis
  • Fat-spread products are water and vegetable oil emulsions with fat content varying from 10 to 90%, and their composition differs by country, necessitating methods to identify their geographical origin.
  • The study developed and optimized multivariate classification methods to differentiate fat-spread products from Spain and Morocco using instrumental fingerprints from HPLC-DAD analysis, requiring no sample treatment other than dissolution in n-hexane.
  • The results showed that 100% of samples were accurately classified using partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) with data collected in reverse phase, demonstrating the effectiveness of the classification methods employed.

The development of an automated kinetic-catalytic spectrophotometric method for cobalt determination is presented. The method is based on the catalytic effect of Co in the oxidation of hydroxybenzoic acid by HO in basic media. The method has been automated using a multisyringe flow injection system coupled to a monolithic flow conduit called chip (chip-MSFIA).

The investigation of the hydrogen-bonding effect on the aggregation tendency of ruthenium compounds [(η--cymene)Ru(κNHR,κNOH)Cl]Cl (R = Ph (), Bn ()) and [(η--cymene)Ru(κNH(2-),κNOH)][PF] (), [(η--cymene)Ru(κNHBn,κNO)Cl] () and [(η--cymene)Ru(κNBn,κNO)] (), has been performed by means of concentration dependence H NMR chemical shifts and DOSY experiments. The synthesis and full characterization of new compounds , [(η--cymene)Ru(κNPh,κNO)] () and are also reported. The effect of the water soluble ruthenium complexes on cytotoxicity, cell adhesion and cell migration of the androgen-independent prostate cancer PC3 cells have been assessed by MTT, adhesion to type-I-collagen and recovery of monolayer wounds assays, respectively.

Introduction: The objectives of this study were to identify and assess the impact of capacity-building biosafety initiatives and programs that have taken place in the broader Middle East and North Africa (BMENA) region between 2001 and 2013, to highlight gaps that require further development, and to suggest sustainable ways to build cooperative regional biosafety opportunities.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with two aspects (1) thorough desktop review of literature for all biosafety/biosecurity-related activities in the study countries, such as seminars, conferences, workshops, policy documents, technology transfer, sustained scientific endeavors between countries, etc. and (2) an online survey of scientists in countries in the region to get first-hand information about biosafety and biosecurity initiatives and gaps in their country.

Airborne fungal spores of Alternaria, meteorological parameters and predicting variables.

Int J Biometeorol

March 2015

Laboratory of Diversity and Conservation of Biological Systems, Faculty of Sciences, Mhannech II, University Abdelmalek Essaâdi, Postal Code 2121, Tetouan, Morocco.

Alternaria is frequently found as airborne fungal spores and is recognized as an important cause of respiratory allergies. The aerobiological monitoring of fungal spores was performed using a Burkard volumetric spore traps. To establish predicting variables for daily and weakly spore counts, a stepwise multiple regression between spore concentrations and independent variables (meteorological parameters and lagged values from the series of spore concentrations: previous day or week concentration (Alt t - 1) and mean concentration of the same day or week in other years (C mean)) was made with data obtained during 2009-2011.

A monolithic flow conduit was especially designed and coupled to a multisyringe unit (MSFIA) in order to develop a kinetic analytical method. The new device, denoted CHIP, integrates different functions in a reduced size including confluent mixing, reaction coil, and thermostating, which allowed minimizing the dimensions of the entire analyzer system. The CHIP-MSFIA was satisfactorily applied to the determination of iodide using the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction.

Effect of meteorological parameters on Poaceae pollen in the atmosphere of Tetouan (NW Morocco).

Int J Biometeorol

March 2013

Laboratory of Diversity and Conservation of Biological Systems, Faculty of Sciences, University Abdelmalek Essaâdi, Mhannech II, Postal Code 2121, Tetouan, Morocco.

Poaceae pollen is one of the most prevalent aeroallergens causing allergenic reactions. The aim of this study was to characterise the grass pollen season in Tetouan during the years 2008-2010, to analyse the effect of some meteorological parameters on the incidence of the airborne Poaceae pollen, and to establish forecasting variables for daily pollen concentrations. Aerobiological sampling was undertaken over three seasons using the volumetric method.
