Background: Patients undergoing Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) are particularly susceptible to infections: 42% experience sepsis and 26% develop a nosocomial infection (NI). Whether antibiotic prophylaxis is effective in reducing mortality and its effects on the rate of NIs is currently unclear.
Research Question: Can antibiotic prophylaxis decrease 30-day mortality for patients on ECMO? Can antibiotic prophylaxis prevent the occurrence of NIs in these patients?
Study Design And Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted.

Objective: Precision Oncology requires deep changes in organizational settings but little evidence has been identified about the best strategy to guarantee the delivery of this innovation to patients. In the Italian health care system, high heterogeneity could jeopardize equal access opportunity for patients. Following a consensus method, we aim to define shared solutions to address these issues in clinical practice.

Objective: We assessed reproductive, obstetrical, and oncological outcomes in patients who underwent fertility-sparing treatment by including studies that adhere to the FIGO 2018 staging system.
Methods: Data on recurrence, mortality, pregnancy rate, live birth rate, and preterm delivery rate were collected.
Results: In patients with stages IA1, IA2, and IB1, the recurrence rate was 4.

Transient or persistent hypo-anosmia is common in SARS‑CoV‑2 infection but olfactory pathway late-term morphometric changes are still under investigation. We evaluated late olfactory bulb (OB) imaging changes and their correlates with the olfactory function in otherwise neurologically asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. Eighty-three subjects (mean-age 43 ± 14 yr; 54 females; time-interval infection/MRI: 129±68 d) were affected by asymptomatic to mild COVID-19 in 2020 and 25 healthy controls (mean-age 40 ± 13 yr; 9 females) underwent 3T-MRI and olfactory function evaluation through anamnestic questionnaire and Sniffin' Sticks.

We explored the functional outcome following awake surgery and Real-Time Neuropsychological Testing (RTNT) in the left insula. We carried out a longitudinal investigation by comparing the patients' language profile, and, in particular, the object-naming skills and the associated fMRI network, of pre-surgery and follow-up (i.e.

Aim: To investigate the optimum antiplatelet therapy regimen (APTR) for emergent carotid artery stenting following mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in stroke patients with tandem occlusion.
Methods: A literature search was performed on Pubmed/OVID/Cochran's CENTRAL database for studies from 2015 to 2022. Patient characteristics, antiplatelet regimen type, mTICI, 90 days-mRS, acute in-stent thrombosis (AIST), mortality, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), and sample size were recorded.

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) was originally developed to enhance prosthetic control in amputees. However, it has also serendipitously demonstrated benefits in reducing phantom pain and neuromas. As a result, it has emerged as a secondary treatment for chronic neuromas in amputees and holds promise for managing neuropathic pain in non-amputee patients, particularly those with neuromas.

Targeted drug delivery has emerged as a transformative approach in the treatment of periorbital skin malignancies, offering the potential for enhanced efficacy and reduced side effects compared to traditional therapies. This review provides a comprehensive overview of targeted therapies in the context of periorbital malignancies, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous gland carcinoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. It explores the mechanisms of action for various targeted therapies, such as monoclonal antibodies, small molecule inhibitors, and immunotherapies, and their applications in treating these malignancies.

Infectious diseases in older adults present a significant challenge to the healthcare system, marked by increased morbidity, mortality, and rising costs of care. Age-related changes (ARCs) in the immune system, including immunosenescence and inflammaging, contribute to heightened susceptibility to severe infections and reduced vaccine responsiveness. Additionally, alterations in the normal microbial flora due to aging and factors such as antibiotic therapy predispose older individuals to infections and age-related diseases.
