Background: Dietary protein adequacy is crucial for muscle health in aging individuals, posing a particular challenge for vegetarian seniors. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigates the impacts of protein-enriched lacto-vegetarian soup supplementation on body composition, physical performance and muscle strength functional assessment as well as cardiometabolic and inflammatory biomarkers in older adults.
Methods: We enrolled 100 participants ≥65 years at risk for malnutrition (MNA-SF ≤ 11) and at risk for sarcopenia (SARC-F ≥4 or SARC-CalF ≥11) in this RCT.

Controlling hypertension has become an important issue in the elderly population in whom neurological comorbidities are highly prevalent. Most of the large-scale trials focusing on hypertension management in older populations have excluded patients with comorbid neurological disorders. However, this population requires special considerations, as the benefits of antihypertensive agents are mostly uncertain and there is a higher risk of adverse events.

Nanoplastics are common environmental pollutants. As of now, research has yet to explore how exposure to nanomaterials during gestation might influence the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) in offspring. Throughout the research, we assessed the AD pathology in adult offspring of mice prenatal 80 nm polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) exposure.

Hypoxia, a condition that enhances tumor invasiveness and metastasis, poses a significant challenge for diverse cancer therapies. There is a pressing demand for hypoxia-responsive nanoparticles with integrated photodynamic functions in order to address the aforementioned issues and overcome the reduced efficacy caused by tumor hypoxia. Here, we report a hypoxia-responsive supramolecular nanoparticle SN@IR806-CB consisting of a dendritic drug-drug conjugate (IR806-Azo-CB) and anionic water-soluble [2]biphenyl-extended-pillar[6]arene modified with eight ammonium salt ions (AWBpP6) the synergy of π-π stacking interaction, host-guest complexation, and hydrophobic interactions for synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and chemotherapy (CT; , PTT-PDT-CT).

Immune functions decline with aging, leading to increased susceptibility to various diseases including tumors. Exploring aging-related molecular targets in elderly patients with cancer is thus highly sought after. Here we find that an ER transmembrane enzyme, sterol O-acyltransferase 2 (SOAT2), is overexpressed in regulatory T (Treg) cells from elderly patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), while radiomics analysis of LSCC patients associates increased SOAT2 expression with reduced immune infiltration and poor prognosis.

Background: The pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and diabetes mellitus (DM) is still unknown, despite clinical reports linking the two conditions. After investigating potential roles for DM-related genes in the pathophysiology of OSA, our goal is to investigate the molecular significance of the condition. Machine learning is a useful approach to understanding complex gene expression data to find biomarkers for the diagnosis of OSA.

Background: Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), a common cause of perioperative anaphylaxis, is frequently used for skin testing in allergy evaluations. Although CHX's maximal nonirritating concentrations are known, the stability of its dilutions for skin testing remains unexplored, particularly when sterile water for injection (SWFI) or normal saline (NS) are used as diluents.
Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the stability and precipitation of CHX when diluted with SWFI or NS for drug allergy skin testing.

Background: Inadequate tumour samples often hinder molecular testing in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Plasma-based cell-free DNA (cfDNA) sequencing has shown promise in bypassing these tissue limitations. Nevertheless, pleural effusion (PE) samples may offer a richer cfDNA source for mutation detection in patients with malignant PE.

Prostate cancer is the most common type after the age of fifty. It affects males and affects the prostate gland, which protects the function of sperm by producing semen. The current study was designed to evaluate prostate cancer infection effects on some biomarkers such as irisin, Tumor necrosis factor-TNF-α, prostate acid phosphates -PAP, Glutathione-GSH, malondialdehyde-MDA, urea, and creatinine.

Interpreting heavy metal variations in sedimentary records is an important approach to understand historical pollution. However, few studies have investigated the reliability of different heavy metals in sedimentary records for reconstructing historical pollution. This study retrieved two adjacent lakes' sediment cores from a remote area in North China and investigated their temporal changes in excessive metal fluxes.

Burns are dynamic injuries characterized by an initial zone of necrosis that progresses to compromise surrounding tissue. Acute inflammation and cell death are two main factors contributing to burn progression. These processes are modulated by Connexin43 (Cx43) hemichannels and gap junctions in burns and chronic wounds.

Gut bacterial metabolism of dietary flavonoids results in the production of a variety of phenolic acids, whose contributions to health remain poorly understood. Here, we show that supplementation with the commonly consumed flavonoid quercetin impacted gut microbiome composition and resulted in a significant reduction in atherosclerosis burden in conventionally raised (ConvR) Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) knockout (KO) mice but not in germ-free (GF) ApoE KO mice. Metabolomic analysis revealed that consumption of quercetin significantly increased plasma levels of benzoylglutamic acid, 3,4 dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-DHBA) and its sulfate-conjugated form in ConvR mice, but not in GF mice supplemented with the flavonoid.

Doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapeutic agent utilized in the management of cancer, provokes cardiotoxicity although effective remedy is lacking. Given that DOX provokes oxidative stress and cell death in cardiomyocytes, this study evaluated the possible involvement of cuproptosis, a newly identified form of cell death, in DOX-instigated cardiac remodeling and contractile dysfunction, alongside the impact of the heavy metal scavenger metallothionein (MT) on DOX cardiomyopathy. Cardiac-specific MT transgenic and wild-type (WT) mice were treated with DOX (5 mg/kg/wk.

Aim: Identifying the common functional single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that can both affect the susceptibility to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and silicosis.
Methods: We first integrated the genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of IPF and silicosis to obtain the shared SNPs. Following this, functional expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL)-SNPs were identified by the GTEx database.

Hierarchical structures are essential in natural adhesion systems. Replicating these in synthetic adhesives is challenging due to intricate molecular mechanisms and multiscale processes. Here, we report three phosphorylated peptides featuring a hydrophobic self-assembly motif linked to a hydrophilic phosphorylated sequence (pSGSS), forming peptide fibril nanoframeworks.
