Artificial intelligence applied to time-lapse microscopy may revolutionize embryo selection in IVF by automating data collection and standardizing the assessments. In this context, blastocyst expansion dynamics, although being associated with reproductive fitness, have been poorly studied. This retrospective study (N = 2184 blastocysts from 786 cycles) exploited both technologies to picture the association between embryo and inner-cell-mass (ICM) area in µm, the ICM/Trophectoderm ratio, and the zona pellucida thickness in µm (zp-T) at sequential blastocyst expansion stages, with (i) euploidy and (ii) live-birth per transfer (N = 548 transfers).

The Comparative Psychotherapy Process Scale (CPPS) is an instrument designed to measure therapist interventions in a psychotherapy session. The scale includes 20 items divided into two subscales: the PI (psychodynamic-interpersonal) scale, which describes psychodynamic-interpersonal techniques; and the CB (cognitive-behavioural) scale, which includes cognitive-behavioural interventions. The aim of the study was to examine the psychometric properties of the CPPS, comparing the PI and CB subscales with the psychodynamic, cognitive and STTP prototypes, as described by the Psychotherapy Process Q-set(PQS).

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is associated with a high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease. Among the well-known pathophysiologic factors, crucial roles are played by endothelial dysfunction (caused by oxidative stress and inflammation hyperglycemia-linked), increased activity of nuclear factor kB, altered macrophage polarization, and reduced synthesis of resident endothelial progenitor cells. As consequence, a potentially rapid progression of the atherosclerotic disease with a higher propensity to unstable plaque is arguable, finally leading to significantly increased cardiovascular mortality.

Molluscs have been widely utilized to evaluate the effects of estrogenic compounds, one of the most widespread classes of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals-EDCs. However, knowledge on steroid signaling and metabolism in molluscs has considerably increased in the last decade: from these studies, a considerable debate emerged on the role of 'natural' steroids in physiology, in particular in reproduction, of this invertebrate group. In this work, available information on the effects and mechanisms of action of estrogens in molluscs will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on bivalves that, widespread in aquatic ecosystems, are most likely affected by exposure to estrogenic EDCs.

Purpose: To assess the transferability of the reference intervals (RI) of testosterone (T), cortisol (C), human growth hormone (hGH), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, calculated on a normal healthy population, to a population of female elite volleyball players. Secondary aim of this study is the evaluation of the T/C ratio as predictive tool of overtraining during the annual regular season.

The aim of this study was to examine the stability of the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Therapist Response Questionnaire (Betan, Heim, Zittel Conklin, & Westen, 2005; Zittel Conklin & Westen, 2003), a clinician report instrument able to measure the clinician's emotional reactions to the patient in psychotherapy. A national sample of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists (N = 332) of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral orientation completed the Therapist Response Questionnaire, as well as the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure-200 (Westen & Shedler, 1999a, 1999b), to assess personality disorders and level of psychological functioning, regarding a patient currently in their care. They also administered the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (Derogatis, 1994) to the patients.

What does matrix metalloproteinase-1 expression in patients with breast cancer really tell us?

Molecular and biochemical expressions of matrix metalloproteinases in breast cancer tissue and cells offers promise in helping us understand the breast cancer microenvironment, and also in the future it is hoped this will improve its detection, treatment and prognosis. In a retrospective study recently published in BMC Cancer, microenvironment predisposing to breast cancer progression, metastatic behavior and the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and its correlation with well-known biochemical, molecular and clinicopathologic factors in breast cancer cells and cancer-associated stromal cells was examined; this study also analyzed patient survival in different breast cancer subtypes. The positive correlation in breast tumor and stromal cells between MMP-1 expression and several markers of tumor grade and stage provide us with some useful new insights into important questions about the molecular profiling of the stromal microenvironment in metastatic breast cancer.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), known as matrixins, are Ca- and Zn-dependent endoproteinases involved in a wide variety of developmental and disease-associated processes, proving to be crucial protagonists in many physiological and pathological mechanisms. The ability of MMPs to alter, by limited proteolysis and through the fine control of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases, the activity or function of numerous proteins, enzymes, and receptors suggests that they are also involved in various important cellular functions during development. In this review, we focus on the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (including those of the myoblastic, osteoblastic, chondroblastic, neural, and apidoblastic lineages) and the possible, if unexpected, biological significance of MMPs in its regulation.

5-(2-Ethyl-phenyl)-3-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-1H-[1,2,4]triazole (DL-111-IT) and related compounds were extensively studied as anti-gestational agents and some of these molecules were also described as inhibitors of ornithine decarboxylase. Polyamine depletion has been frequently related to the induction of apoptosis and consequently we investigated DL-111-IT and analogs for this effect in myeloid (HL60), neuroblastic (SK-N-MC) and epithelial (BeWo) human tumor cell lines, by means of electron microscopy and DNA electrophoresis. HL60 and SK-N-MC appeared notably sensitive to apoptosis, whereas BeWo responsiveness was variable and frequently associated with necrosis.
