Objectives: Many studies have shown that socio-economic status (SES) contributes to health inequalities, with nutrition as one of the major risk factors. Iodine intake entirely depends on external sources, and deficiencies are known to be more prevalent in lower social groups, especially in countries with limited access to iodized salt. This study aimed to determine the influence of SES on iodine status and iodine availability from household salt in North Macedonia.

: In centers with limited resources, a high flow nasal cannula is not available, thus we assess if preoxygenation with 15L flow of O2 available from anesthesia machines can prolong the safety period of induction of anesthesia before intubation and provide more time for securing the airway. Moreover, we compared the preoxygenation with standard 6L vs. 15L O2 through a facemask or a nasal cannula.

: The administration of high doses of opioids during surgery can lead to higher postoperative pain scores at rest and when coughing. Multimodal analgesia may lower the need for opioids during surgery and the suffering of postoperative pain. Multimodal analgesia can be achieved by providing non-opioid drugs (lidocaine, ketamine, and magnesium sulfate), three different types of drugs.

Is Multimodal Anesthesia Effecting Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

Pril (Makedon Akad Nauk Umet Odd Med Nauki)

July 2022

University Clinical Center "Mother Teresa" Skopje, University Clinic for Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Medical Faculty - Skopje, University ″Ss. Cyril and Methodius″ Skopje, RN Macedonia.

: Multimodal anesthesia represents a technique that can improve analgesia and lower the occurrence of opioid side effects in the postoperative period, such as postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). It can be achieved by providing different types of medication during the intraoperative period which can decrease the need for opioids. PONV happens more often in patients who have received large amounts of opioids during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Introduction: Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare inherited lysosomal storage disease characterized by multi-system impairment. One of its main features is the over-expressed chronic stimulation and activation of the immune system, which may play a crucial role in the development of some malignancies associated with GD.

Case Description: We describe a young woman diagnosed with GD type 1 in early adulthood who developed early-onset colorectal cancer shortly after GD diagnosis and the initiation of enzyme replacement therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies showed a rise in cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting this evaluation of hospitalization and mortality rates comparing the pandemic year (2020) to the year prior (2019).
  • A cross-sectional study analyzed data from 171 stroke centers worldwide, focusing on CVT admissions and associated mortality from January 2019 to May 2021, revealing no significant differences in overall CVT volume or mortality between 2019 and 2020.
  • However, the first five months of 2021 saw a notable increase in CVT admissions compared to 2019 and 2020, with higher mortality rates linked to COVID-19-positive patients and instances of vaccine-induced immune

Rehabilitation aims to increase the independence and physical function after injury, surgery, or other trauma, so that patients can recover to their previous ability as much as possible. To be able to measure the degree of recovery and impact of the treatment, various functional performance tests are used. The Eight Hop Test is a hop exercise that is directly linked to the rehabilitation of people suffering from tendon and ligament injuries on the lower limb.

April 2022

Population Genomics Group Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Department of Veterinary Sciences LMU Munich Munich Germany.

The contribution of domestic cattle in human societies is enormous, making cattle, along with other essential benefits, the economically most important domestic animal in the world today. To expand existing knowledge on cattle domestication and mitogenome diversity, we performed a comprehensive complete mitogenome analysis of the species (802 sequences, 114 breeds). A large sample was collected in South-east Europe, an important agricultural gateway to Europe during Neolithization and a region rich in cattle biodiversity.

A Comprehensive Review of Methods and Equipment for Aiding Automatic Glaucoma Tracking.

Diagnostics (Basel)

April 2022

Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Tecnologia e Ciência, 3200-465 Porto, Portugal.

Glaucoma is a chronic optic neuropathy characterized by irreversible damage to the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), resulting in changes in the visual field (VC). Glaucoma screening is performed through a complete ophthalmological examination, using images of the optic papilla obtained in vivo for the evaluation of glaucomatous characteristics, eye pressure, and visual field. Identifying the glaucomatous papilla is quite important, as optical papillary images are considered the gold standard for tracking.

The human gut microbiota is the microbial ecosystem in the small and large intestines of humans. It has been naturally preserved and evolved to play an important role in the function of the gastrointestinal tract and the physiology of its host, protecting from pathogen colonization, and participating in vitamin synthesis, the functions of the immune system, as well as glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism, among others. Mounting evidence from animal and human studies indicates that the composition and metabolic profiles of the gut microbiota are linked to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, particularly arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure.

The dataset presented in this paper presents a dataset related to three motionless activities, including driving, watching TV, and sleeping. During these activities, the mobile device may be positioned in different locations, including the pants pockets, in a wristband, over the bedside table, on a table, inside the car, or on other furniture, for the acquisition of accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, GPS, and microphone data. The data was collected by 25 individuals (15 men and 10 women) in different environments in Covilhã and Fundão municipalities (Portugal).

Large-scale labeled datasets are generally necessary for successfully training a deep neural network in the computer vision domain. In order to avoid the costly and tedious work of manually annotating image datasets, self-supervised learning methods have been proposed to learn general visual features automatically. In this paper, we first focus on image colorization with generative adversarial networks (GANs) because of their ability to generate the most realistic colorization results.
