Ketone bodies (KBs) are an alternative energy source under starvation and play multiple roles as signaling molecules regulating energy and metabolic homeostasis. The mechanism by which KBs influence visceral white adipose tissue physiology is only partially known, and our study aimed to shed light on the effects they exert on such tissue. To this aim, we administered 1,3-butanediol (BD) to rats since it rapidly enhances β-hydroxybutyrate serum levels, and we evaluated the effect it induces within 3 h or after 14 days of treatment.

Life sustains itself using energy generated by thermodynamic disequilibria, commonly existing as redox disequilibria. Metals are significant players in controlling redox reactions, as they are essential components of the engine that life uses to tap into the thermodynamic disequilibria necessary for metabolism. The number of proteins that evolved to catalyze redox reactions is extraordinary, as is the diversification level of metal cofactors and catalytic domain structures involved.

Here, we tested that standard eyes-closed resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms may characterize patients with mild cognitive impairment due to chronic kidney disease at stages 3-4 (CKDMCI-3&4) in relation to CKDMCI patients under hemodialysis (CKDMCI-H) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVMCI). Clinical and rsEEG data in 22 CKDMCI-3&4, 15 CKDMCI-H, 18 CVMCI, and 30 matched healthy control (HC) participants were available in a national archive. Spectral rsEEG power density was calculated from delta to gamma frequency bands at scalp electrodes.

Among inflammatory cytokines, Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of the major activators of acute phase response and is also involved in immune response and cancer progression. IL-6 is involved in the up-regulation of enzymes and growth factors acting on the extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling components in physio-pathological processes. IL-6 enhances the expression of metalloproteases (MMP-)2/9, enzymes that play a key role in ECM degradation and therefore contribute to the process of tumor metastasis.

GNSS has become ubiquitous in high-precision applications, although the cost of high-end GNSS receivers remains a major obstacle for many applications. Recent advances in GNSS receiver technology have led to the development of low-cost GNSS receivers, making high-precision positioning available to a wider range of users. One such technique for achieving high-precision positioning is Precise Point Positioning-Real Time Kinematic (PPP-RTK).

Although physical activity has positive physical and mental health outcomes, particularly among adolescents, a significant percentage of young people maintain a largely sedentary lifestyle. Considering that the youths spend the greater part of the day at school, this is considered an ideal setting to foster active and healthy living. Consequently, this study is intended to investigate the connection between physical activity, self-efficacy and academic achievement in normal-weight and overweight adolescents.

The high-resolution Campania Regional Ocean Model (CROM), coupled with an online Lagrangian particle tracking algorithm, is used to investigate the horizontal and vertical behavior of different (in terms of size and density) plastic polymer types during February and August 2016 in the Gulf of Naples. The transport of passive particles is evaluated based on the three-dimensional Eulerian velocity fields provided by the ocean model. The virtual particles are released in several hot spot areas in the Gulf of Naples where most of the marine debris is supposed to come from.

Altered self-awareness or anosognosia may impact patients' everyday life by interfering with their safe and independent functioning. Symptom awareness has been linked to executive dysfunctions caused by damage to frontal regions. Apathy is a frequent neuropsychiatric manifestation of Parkinson's disease (PD) and is considered a consequence of altered functioning of cortico-subcortical circuitries connecting the prefrontal cortex (PFC) with the basal ganglia.

The meadows represent a fundamental biological indicator for the assessment of the marine ecosystem's state of health. They also play an essential role in the conservation of coastal morphology. The composition, extent, and structure of the meadows are conditioned by the biological characteristics of the plant itself and by the environmental setting, considering the type and nature of the substrate, the geomorphology of the seabed, the hydrodynamics, the depth, the light availability, the sedimentation speed, etc.

Sialyl Lewis X (sLe ) antigen is a fucosylated cell-surface glycan that is normally involved in cell-cell interactions. The enhanced expression of sLe on cell surface glycans, which is attributed to the upregulation of fucosyltransferase 6 (FUT6), has been implicated in facilitating metastasis in human colorectal, lung, prostate, and oral cancers. The role that the upregulated FUT6 plays in the progression of tumor to malignancy, with reduced survival rates, makes it a potential target for anticancer drugs.

The functional organization of the brain is usually presented with a back-to-front gradient of timescales, reflecting regional specialization with sensory areas (back) processing information faster than associative areas (front), which perform information integration. However, cognitive processes require not only local information processing but also coordinated activity across regions. Using magnetoencephalography recordings, we find that the functional connectivity at the edge level (between two regions) is also characterized by a back-to-front gradient of timescales following that of the regional gradient.
