We investigate the energy spectra and optical absorption of a 3D quantum dot-double quantum ring structure of GaAs/AlGaAs with adjustable geometrical parameters. In the effective mass approximation, we perform 3D numerical computations using as height profile a superposition of three Gaussian functions. Independent variations of height and width of the dot and of the rings and also of the dot-rings distance determine particular responses, useful in practical applications.

Advances in radiotherapy, particularly the exploration of alternative radiation types such as carbon ions have updated our understanding of its effects and applicability on chondrosarcoma cells. Here we compare the optical effects produced by carbon ions (CI) and X-rays (XR) radiations on chondrosarcoma cells nuclei and set an automated method for evaluating the radiation-induced alterations without the need of chemical marking. Hyperspectral images (HSI) of SW1353 chondrosarcoma line carry detectable optical changes of the cells irradiated either with CI or XR compared to non-irradiated ones (REF).

Infectious diseases are acknowledged as one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Statistics show that the annual death toll caused by bacterial infections has reached 14 million, most of which are caused by drug-resistant strains. Bacterial antibiotic resistance is currently regarded as a compelling problem with dire consequences, which motivates the urgent identification of alternative ways of fighting bacteria.

This study aimed to obtain and characterize a mortar with perlite aggregate and thermal-treated materials that could substitute for Portland cement. First, the thermally treated materials were obtained by calcinating old Portland cement (OC-tt) and concrete demolition waste (CC-tt) at 550 °C, for 3 h. Second, plastic mortars with a perlite: cement volume ratio of 3:1 were prepared and tested for water absorption, mechanical strength, and thermal conductivity.

With the increasing use of invasive, interventional, indwelling, and implanted medical devices, healthcare-associated infections caused by pathogenic biofilms have become a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Herein, we present the fabrication, characterization, and evaluation of biocompatibility and anti-biofilm properties of new coatings based on FeO nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with usnic acid (UA) and ceftriaxone (CEF). Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) was employed as a stabilizer and modulator of the polarity, dispersibility, shape, and anti-biofilm properties of the magnetite nanoparticles.

Adhesive joints are widely used for structural bonding in various industrial sectors. The performance of bonded joints is commonly attributed to the cleanliness of the substrate and the pre-treatment of the surfaces to be bonded. In this study, the Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) deposition technique was used for surface modification of aluminum (Al) plates by the deposition of poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) (PPG-NH) of different number average molecular weights (Mn) of 400 g mol, 2000 g mol, and 4000 g mol, respectively.

New gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-strontium-doped nanosize hydroxyapatite (SrHA) composite hydrogel scaffolds were developed using UV photo-crosslinking and 3D printing for bone tissue regeneration, with the controlled delivery capacity of strontium (Sr). While Sr is an effective anti-osteoporotic agent with both anti-resorptive and anabolic properties, it has several important side effects when systemic administration is applied. Multi-layer composite scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration were developed based on the digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technique through the photopolymerization of GelMA.

This paper explores the latest advancements in aerogel technology for antimicrobial therapy, revealing their interesting capacity that could improve the current medical approaches for antimicrobial treatments. Aerogels are attractive matrices because they can have an antimicrobial effect on their own, but they can also provide efficient delivery of antimicrobial compounds. Their interesting properties, such as high porosity, ultra-lightweight, and large surface area, make them suitable for such applications.
