Iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using a vortex microfluidic system and subsequently functionalized with a primary shell of salicylic acid, recognized for its ability to increase the stability and biocompatibility of coated materials. In the second stage, the vortex platform was placed in a magnetic field to facilitate the growth and development of a porous silica shell. The selected drug for this study was micafungin, an antifungal agent well regarded for its effectiveness in combating fungal infections and identified as a priority compound by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Eco-Friendly Hydrogel Beads from Seashell Waste for Efficient Removal of Heavy Metals from Water.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnologies, National University of Science and Technology Politehnica of Bucharest, 1-7 Polizu Street, 011061 Bucharest, Romania.

The objective of this study is to develop a calcium carbonate-based adsorbent derived from seashells, incorporated into a sodium alginate matrix (Na-Alg@CTs) to form hydrogel beads, for the efficient removal of Cu (II) and Zn (II) heavy metals from aqueous solutions. XRD, SEM/EDS, and FTIR analysis confirm the successful synthesis and characterization of the fabricated adsorbent. The adsorption study of Cu (II) and Zn (II) onto Na-Alg@CTs hydrogel beads revealed that the Langmuir model was the most suitable for characterizing the adsorption isotherms, suggesting monolayer coverage.

From rock to living systems: Lanthanides toxicity and biological interactions.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

December 2024

The Research Institute of the University of Bucharest, ICUB, Bucharest, Romania; Microbiology-Immunology Department, Faculty of Biology, University of Bucharest, Bucharest 050095, Romania.

Since the discovery of lanthanides, the expanding range of applications and the growing demand for lanthanides in different aspects of life have escalated their dispersion in the environment, raising concerns about their impact on the living world. This review explores the interaction between lanthanides and different groups of living organisms (bacteria, algae, lichens, plants, invertebrates, and low vertebrates), reflecting the current state of scientific knowledge. We have aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of relevant studies, highlight existing gaps, and suggest potential areas for future research to enhance the understanding of this topic.

This study investigates the potential of combining Cerium-doped bioactive glass (BBGi) with Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to enhance the properties of titanium (Ti) implant surfaces using the Matrix-Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) technique. The primary focus is on improving osseointegration, corrosion resistance, and evaluating the cytotoxicity of the developed thin films towards host cells. The innovative approach involves synthesizing a composite thin film comprising BBGi and PVP, leveraging the distinct benefits of both materials: BBGi's biocompatibility and osteoinductive capabilities, and PVP's film-forming and biocompatible properties.

The skin, known as the largest organ of the body, is essential for maintaining physiological balance and acts as a barrier against the external environment. When skin becomes damaged and wounds appear on the skin's surface, a complex healing process, involving multiple types of cells and microenvironments, take place. Selecting a suitable dressing for a wound is crucial for accelerating healing, reducing treatment costs, and improving the patient's overall health.

The primary aim of this study was to synthesize and characterize polyurethane (PUR) foams derived from the depolymerization products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and MXenes (NbAlC). The depolymerized PET products were produced through a zinc acetate-catalyzed glycolysis process using diethylene glycol (DEG) as solvent. These glycolysis products were then reacted with 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), commercial polyols, and MXenes to produce the PUR foams.

In the transition to zero waste and sustainable development, it becomes essential to use phase change materials and recycled cement in construction projects to improve energy efficiency and encourage sustainable building practices. The primary goal of this study is to determine how the properties of expanded perlite mortars are affected when Portland cement is partially replaced with recycled cement, produced by thermally treating concrete waste at 550 °C. Recycled cement substituted Portland cement in various percentages (10 %, 30 %, and 50 %).

Given the constant increased number of nosocomial infections in hospitals, especially associated with prolonged usage of inserted medical devices, our work aims to ameliorate clinical experience and promote faster healing of patients undergoing urinary catheterization by improving the properties of medical devices materials. Within this research, nine different composites were prepared based on polyvinyl chloride, using three different plasticizers (di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, Proviplast 2646, and Proviplast 2755), and two different antimicrobial additives containing silver nanoparticles. The prepared materials were analyzed, and their physicochemical properties were determined: water absorption, relative density, plasticizer migration, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity by contact angle measurement, Shore A hardness, tensile strength, and elongation at break.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the high-temperature deformation behavior of UNS S32750 Super Duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) at temperatures between 1050 to 1200 °C, using an up-setting method with varying impact energy to assess deformability.
  • - Key findings indicate that higher deformation temperatures and increased impact energy result in a greater degree of deformation, while deformation resistance and mechanical work tend to decrease with increasing temperatures.
  • - Microstructural analysis reveals that all samples exhibit intensely deformed grains, with grain elongation primarily occurring in the rolling direction, and a notable increase in grain deformation intensity as deformation temperature rises.

Coronavirus-infected cells contain double-membrane vesicles (DMVs) that are key for viral RNA replication and transcription, perforated by hexameric pores connecting the vesicular lumen to the cytoplasm. How pores form and traverse two membranes, and how DMVs organize RNA synthesis, is unknown. Using structure prediction and functional assays, we show that the nonstructural viral membrane protein nsp4 is the key pore organizer, spanning the double membrane and forming most of the pore lining.

This article aims to test, measure and evaluate the quality of voice calls made in a mobile cellular network. A set of drive tests were conducted, during which logs were collected using specialized measurement terminals equipped with a dedicated voice evaluation application. Three different scenarios were considered: the first scenario consisted of a series of mobile-to-mobile calls in a circuit-switched (CS) domain over the GSM network, the second scenario involved similar calls using the VoLTE service in a packet-switched (PS) domain of a 4G network, and the third scenario employed an over-the-top (OTT) media service type via the WhatsApp application in the same PS domain of the 4G network.
