Diabetes has emerged as a prevalent disease, affecting millions of individuals annually according to statistics. Numerous studies have delved into identifying key genes implicated in the causal mechanisms of diabetes. This paper specifically concentrates on 20 functional genes identified in various studies contributing to the complexities associated with Type 2 diabetes (T2D), encompassing complications such as nephropathy, retinopathy, cardiovascular disorders, and foot ulcers.

Translational research for the evaluation of physical activity habits and lifestyle modifications based on nutrition and exercise has recently gained attention. In this study, we evaluated the effects of serum samples obtained before and after a 12-week home-based lifestyle intervention based on nutrition and exercise in breast cancer survivors in terms of modulation of the tumorigenic potential of breast cancer cells. The home-based lifestyle intervention proposed in this work consisted of educational counselling on exercise and nutritional behaviors and in 12 weeks of structured home-based exercise.

Anthropogenic contribution, transport, and accumulation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in sediments of the continental shelf and slope in the Mediterranean Sea.

Chemosphere

March 2024

Institute for Marine Biological Resources and Biotechnology (IRBIM), National Research Council (CNR), Largo Fiera della Pesca 2, 60125, Ancona, Italy; University of Camerino, School of Science and Technology, Geology Division, Via Gentile III da Varano, Camerino, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • - A multidisciplinary study utilized geochemical, sedimentological, and oceanographic methods to analyze the distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the heavily populated region of the marginal Adriatic Sea.
  • - The research explored how factors like sediment grain size, biogeochemical properties, oceanographic processes, and river inputs affected PAH distribution.
  • - Findings showed PAH concentrations in marine surface sediments ranged from 4 to 235 ng/g, with higher levels associated with clay-rich sediments in deeper areas of the Middle Adriatic Depression.

Despite increasing interest, a lack of comprehensive knowledge regarding the efficient design and implementation of carbon farming schemes remains. These schemes must efficiently achieve higher carbon sequestration, incentivize farmers, and increase farmers' participation in global carbon markets. Our study systematically reviews, describes, and maps available evidence related to carbon farming contracts to assess different incentive mechanisms for carbon farming.

Introduction: Tachidino is a web-based platform for remote treatment of reading and spelling disorders. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the possible impact of different clinical conditions on the efficacy of treatment. The focus was on possible ADHD comorbidity-related effects on the outcomes of the Tachidino treatment, and the impact of previous treatments, such as speech and language therapy or the repetition of the same Tachidino program.

is an ascomycete that forms ectomycorrhizal (ECM) symbioses with a wide range of host plants, producing edible fruiting bodies with high economic value. The quality of seedlings in the early symbiotic stage is important for successful truffle cultivation. Numerous bacterial species have been reported to take part in the truffle biological cycle and influence the establishment of roots symbiosis in plant hosts and the development of the carpophore.

Old and new strategies in therapy and diagnosis against fungal infections.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2024

Department of Biomolecular Sciences, University of Urbino Carlo Bo, 61029, Urbino, PU, Italy.

Fungal infections represent a serious global health threat. The new emerging pathogens and the spread of different forms of resistance are now hardly challenging the tools available in therapy and diagnostics. With the commonly used diagnoses, fungal identification is often slow and inaccurate, and, on the other hand, some drugs currently used as treatments are significantly affected by the decrease in susceptibility.

The MexXY-OprM multidrug efflux pump (EP) in aminoglycosides resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the major resistance mechanisms, which is often overexpressed in strains isolated from pulmonary chronic disease such as cystic fibrosis. In this research, we focused on the design of potential efflux pumps inhibitors, targeting MexY, the inner membrane component, in an allosteric site. Berberine has been considered as lead molecule since we previously demonstrated its effectiveness in targeting MexY in laboratory reference strains.

The lack of economic funds commonly represents a limiting factor in scientific research and prevents scientists from developing brilliant ideas. Indeed, a new project may involve using appropriate scientific instruments and concurrently dealing with the costs before pursuing new research fields. The innovative concept of investigating the effects of electric fields, as a simulation of marine electrical pollution, on benthic organisms such as foraminifera (marine protozoa) has been recently explored by our research group.

Several studies have reported the high bioindication capacity of Isopoda (Crustacea, Oniscidea), which is related to their important ability to accumulate contaminants, usefulness in soil ecotoxicology and bioindication activities. Any change in the isopod population, diversity and life cycle can indicate relevant pollution levels. The analysis of target tissues, such as the hepatopancreas, is another emerging approach (from a cytologic/histological level) to detect contaminant accumulation from different sources.

Useful Access to Uncommon Thiazolo[3,2-]indoles.

J Org Chem

January 2024

Department of Biomolecular Sciences, Section of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies, University of Urbino "Carlo Bo", Via I Maggetti 24, 61029 Urbino (PU), Italy.

A practical and environmentally benign protocol for the assembly of poly substituted-thiazolo[3,2-]indoles from 3-alkylated indoline-2-thiones and 2-halo-ketones has been developed. This metal-free approach consists in a complete chemo/regioselective formal [3 + 2] annulation that occurs in air, at 60 °C, and in water as the sole reaction medium. The opportunity to vary the substitution pattern up to six different positions, odorless manipulation of sulfurylated compounds, very easy product isolation, and mild reaction conditions are the main synthetic features of this method.

Hypoxic ischemic brain injury: animal models reveal new mechanisms of melatonin-mediated neuroprotection.

Rev Neurosci

April 2024

Department of Chemistry, Life Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, University of Parma, Parco Area delle Scienze 11/A, 43124 Parma, Italy.

Oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation play a key role in the development of hypoxic-ischemic (H-I) induced brain damage. Following H-I, rapid neuronal death occurs during the acute phase of inflammation, and activation of the oxidant-antioxidant system contributes to the brain damage by activated microglia. So far, in an animal model of perinatal H-I, it was showed that neuroprostanes are present in all brain damaged areas, including the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and striatum.

Introduction: Pure hereditary spastic paraplegia (SPG) type 4 (SPG4) is caused by mutations of gene. This study aimed to analyze variants in SPG4 patients to highlight the occurrence of splicing mutations and combine functional studies to assess the relevance of these variants in the molecular mechanisms of the disease.

Methods: We performed an NGS panel in 105 patients, analysis for splicing mutations, and minigene assay.

The histone deacetylase sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) has been endowed with anti-cancer capabilities in many tumor types. Here, we investigate the impact of SIRT6-overexpression (SIRT6-OE) in Delta16HER2 mice, which are a bona fide model of HER2-positive breast cancer. After an initial delay in the tumor onset, SIRT6-OE induces a more aggressive phenotype of Delta16HER2 tumors promoting the formation of higher number of tumor foci and metastases than controls.
