Helicobacter pullorum is recognized as an emerging food-borne pathogen that may colonize the intestinal tract and the liver of avian species and humans causing several gastrointestinal and liver diseases. However, not all strains are reported to be capable of causing clinical disease, thus making poultry as reservoir for the zoonotic transmission of the infection through carcass contamination of broilers at slaughter. In poultry, the prevalence of this bacterium could be underestimated and the available data mainly refer to conventional rearing systems, whereas free-range and organic breedings have been poorly investigated.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent forms of neurodegenerative disorders. Previously, we have shown that in vivo administration of an IL-17 neutralizing antibody (IL-17Ab) rescues amyloid-β-induced neuro-inflammation and memory impairment, demonstrating the pivotal role of IL-17 in AD-derived cognitive deficit. Recently, AD has been recognized as a more intriguing pathology affecting vascular networks and platelet function.

Background And Aims: Atherosclerosis is widely accepted to be an inflammatory disease driven by lipid accumulation and leukocyte recruitment. More recently, galectins, a family of β-galactoside binding proteins, have been shown to play a role in leukocyte recruitment among other immunomodulatory functions. Galectin (Gal) -9, a tandem repeat type galectin expressed by the endothelium in inflammatory environments, has been proposed to promote leukocyte recruitment.

Objective: In the frame of the Uric Acid Right for Heart Health (URRAH) study, a nationwide multicenter study involving adult participants recruited on a regional community basis from all the territory of Italy under the patronage of the Working Group on Uric Acid and Cardiovascular Risk of the Italian Society of Hypertension, we searched for the cut-off values of the ratio between serum uric acid (SUA) and serum creatinine (sCr) able to predict cardiovascular (CV) events.
Methods: Among 20 724 participants followed-up for 126 ± 64 months, after detecting cut-off by the receiver operating characteristic curves, we calculated by Cox models adjusted for confounders having CV events as dependent variable the hazard ratio (HR) of SUA/sCr > cut-off. We also verified if the role of cut-off varied with increasing SUA/sCr.

Cyanobacteria produce a plethora of structurally diverse bioactive secondary metabolites, including cyanotoxins which pose a serious threat to humans and other living organisms worldwide. Currently, a wide variety of mass spectrometry-based methods for determination of microcystins (MCs), the most commonly occurring and studied class of cyanotoxins, have been developed and employed for research and monitoring purposes. The scarcity of commercially available reference materials, together with the ever-growing range of mass spectrometers and analytical approaches, make the accuracy of quantitative analyses a critical point to be carefully investigated in view of a reliable risk evaluation.

Structural, functional, and molecular alterations in excitatory spines are a common hallmark of many neurodevelopmental disorders including intellectual disability and autism. Here, we describe an optimized methodology, based on combined use of DiI and immunofluorescence, for rapid and sensitive characterization of the structure and composition of spines in native brain tissue. We successfully demonstrate the applicability of this approach by examining the properties of hippocampal spines in juvenile KO mice, a mouse model of Fragile X Syndrome.

The latest studies identified the histone deacetylase (HDAC) class of enzymes as strategic components of the complex molecular machinery underlying inflammation in cystic fibrosis (CF). Compelling new support has been provided for HDAC6 isoform as a key player in the generation of the dysregulated proinflammatory phenotype in CF, as well as in the immune response to the persistent bacterial infection accompanying CF patients. We herein provide in vivo proof-of-concept (PoC) of the efficacy of selective HDAC6 inhibition in contrasting the pro-inflammatory phenotype in a mouse model of chronic P.

Several studies indicate a relationship between maternal gut microbiota alteration and increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in offspring. The possibility of compensating for such metabolic dysfunction at a very early stage of disease via maternal treatment has not been enough explored. Here, we examined in BTBR mouse model of ASD the effect of maternal treatment with the gut microbial metabolite butyrate (BUT) on the behavioral and synaptic plasticity deficits in juvenile and adult offspring.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are two conditions that coexist in many multifactorial diseases and the discovery of antioxidants is an attractive approach that can simultaneously tackle two or more therapeutic targets of the arachidonic acid cascade. We report that the simple structural variations on the 4-aryl-benzene-1,2-diol side-arm of the scaffold significantly influence the selectivity against 5-LOX vs 12- and 15-LOX. Derivatives 4 a-l were evaluated for their antioxidant activity, using the DPPH, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods.
