Adaptive immunity relies on the efficient recruitment of T cells from the blood into peripheral tissues. However, the current understanding of factor(s) coordinating these events is incomplete. Previous studies on galectin-9 (Gal-9), have proposed a functionally significant role for this lectin in mediating leukocyte adhesion and transmigration.

Countless expectations converge in the multidisciplinary endeavour for the search and development of effective and safe drugs in fighting cancer. Although they still embody a minority of the pharmacological agents currently in clinical use, metal-based complexes have great yet unexplored potential, which probably hides forthcoming anticancer drugs. Following the historical success of cisplatin and congeners, but also taking advantage of conventional chemotherapy limitations that emerged with applications in the clinic, the design and development of non-platinum metal-based chemotherapeutics, either as drugs or prodrugs, represents a rapidly evolving field wherein candidate compounds can be fine-tuned to access interactions with druggable biological targets.

Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in breast cancer survivors. Chemotherapy contributes to this risk. We aimed to define the mechanisms of long-term vascular dysfunction caused by neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and identify novel therapeutic targets.

Background And Aim: Total mesorectal excision (TME) remains the treatment of choice in T2N0 tumors. However, evidence suggest that one-size-fits-all approach is not always beneficial for this group of patients. The aim of this study is to synthesize data on long-term outcomes after neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) followed by local excision (LE) in T2N0 rectal cancer patients in the perspective of a rectal-preserving strategy.

The role of HS in urothelial carcinoma (UC) is still unclear. Here we have evaluated the expression of HS producing enzymes as well as the effect of endogenous and exogenous HS on human bladder UC cells. In human UC cells the expression of cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST); is significantly lower as compared to healthy cells.

Background: Although the laparoscopic approach is considered the gold standard for elective splenectomy, it is still debated whether the underlying disease affects postoperative outcomes. Given the importance of good patient selection in the early stages of the learning curve for laparoscopic splenectomy (LS), this study aimed to compare the postoperative outcomes following LS for malignant diseases and benign diseases (MDs and BDs).
Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent LS was performed at 2 different institutions between January 2013 and September 2020.

Carnosol possesses several beneficial pharmacological properties. However, its role in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced inflammation and cardiomyocyte cell line (H9C2) has never been investigated. Therefore, the effect of carnosol and an NF-B inhibitor BAY 11-7082 was examined, and the underlying role of the NF-B-dependent inflammatory pathway was analyzed as the target enzyme.

Benefits for vitamin E intake in diseases with inflammatory components have been described and related in part, to endogenously formed metabolites (long-chain metabolites, LCM). Here, we have evaluated the role of LCM in relieving asthma features. To this aim, the endogenous vitamin E metabolite α-13'-carboxychromanol (α-T-13'-COOH) that acts as potent 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor has been administered either intraperitoneally or by oral gavage to BALB/c mice sensitized by subcutaneous injection of ovalbumin (OVA).

Background: Spasticity and chronic neuropathic pain are common and serious symptoms in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). These symptoms increase with disease progression and lead to worsening disability, impaired activities of daily living and quality of life. Anti-spasticity medications and analgesics are of limited benefit or poorly tolerated.

Formyl peptide receptor type 2 (FPR2/ALX) belongs to the formyl peptide receptors (FPRs) family clustered on chromosome 19 and encodes a family of three Class A of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). A short N-terminal region, an NPXXY motif in transmembrane (TM) region 7 and an E/DRY motif that bridges TM3 and TM6 stabilizing inactive receptor conformations characterize this class of receptors. In recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), FPRs play a crucial role in innate immune responses.

Breast cancer is one of the major causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in women worldwide. During the past three decades, several improvements in the adjuvant treatment of hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer have been achieved with the introduction of optimized adjuvant chemotherapy and endocrine treatment. However, estimating the risk of relapse of breast cancer on an individual basis is still challenging.

Emerging evidence suggests that perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) has a relevant role in the control of vascular tone in physiology and pathology. Healthy PVAT has anticontractile, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative actions. Accumulating data from both human and experimental animal models indicate that PVAT dysfunction is conceivably coupled to cardiovascular diseases, and it is associated with vascular inflammation, oxidative stress, and arterial remodeling.

Phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts obtained from the Turkish plant Centaurea kotschyi subsp. persica led to the isolation of nine sesquiterpene lactones belonging to the guaiane class, including the undescribed kotschyols A and B, a monoterpene lactone (daphnauranin E), four known lignans (matairesinol, matairesinoside, arctiin and arctigenin) and an undescribed dihydrobenzofuran neolignan (4-O-glucosylcrataegifin A). The structures of these compounds were defined by spectroscopic analysis, including ECD and 1D/2D NMR, and chemical conversion.

Oxygen levels are key regulators of virtually every living mammalian cell, under both physiological and pathological conditions. Starting from embryonic and fetal development, through the growth, onset, and progression of diseases, oxygen is a subtle, although pivotal, mediator of key processes such as differentiation, proliferation, autophagy, necrosis, and apoptosis. Hypoxia-driven modifications of cellular physiology are investigated in depth or for their clinical and translational relevance, especially in the ischemic scenario.

Phenylpropanoid glycosides are a class of natural substances of plant origin with interesting biological activities and pharmacological properties. This study reports the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of calceolarioside A, a phenylpropanoid glycoside previously isolated from various Calceolaria species. In models of acute nociception induced by thermal stimuli, such as the hot plate and tail flick test, calceolarioside administered at doses of 1, 5, and 10 μg in the left cerebral ventricles did not modify the behavioral response of mice.

Laryngeal squamous cell cancer (LSCC) accounts for almost 25-30% of all head and neck squamous cell cancers and is clustered according to the affected districts, as this determines distinct tendency to recur and metastasize. A major role for numerous genetic alterations in driving the onset and progression of this neoplasm is emerging. However, major efforts are still required for the identification of molecular markers useful for both early diagnosis and prognostic definition of LSCC that is still characterized by significant morbidity and mortality.

In a million years, under the pressure of natural selection, hominins have acquired the abilities for vocal learning, music, and language. Music is a relevant human activity, highly effective in enhancing sociality, is a universal experience common to all known human cultures, although it varies in rhythmic and melodic complexity. It has been part of human life since the beginning of our history, or almost, and it strengthens the mother-baby relation even within the mother's womb.
