Plasmacytomas can be divided into multiple, solitary osseous and solitary extraosseous/extramedullary plasmacytomas. Intracranial plasmacytomas of the dura, leptomeninx and cerebrum are well known from the literature. They are manifestations of multiple myeloma, intracranial extramedullary plasmacytoma or metastatic disease of extramedullary plasmacytoma in distant locations.

Serum concentrations of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyrotropine were measured in 34 patients with nonseasonal affective disorders before and after 1 week of light treatment. Nineteen of these patients received bright white light (2500 lx) and 15 dim red light (50 lx) for 2 hours daily in the mornings over a 1-week period. Slight but significant reductions in the rating scores for the depressive symptomatology were found for both the bright-and dim-light groups, but there were no significant differences between the two groups.

The structures of two kinds of small RNA hairpin loops were investigated. As an example of four-membered loops the family of GNNA-loops was chosen, and the influence of a variation of the two middle bases on the rather uncommon G-A base pair was examined. Comparison of the resulting structures showed surprisingly little dependence on the sequence for the overall structure and for the G-A base pair geometry.

The physiologically active metabolite of vitamin D, 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol), induces gap junctional intercellular communication in human skin fibroblasts 161BR at a concentration of 10(-7) M. In human skin fibroblasts, FIB5, devoid of a functional nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR), there is no effect on gap junctional intercellular communication. Parallel to the increase in cell-cell communication, we observed a VDR-dependent increase in connexin43 protein and connexin43 mRNA levels.

The detection of thrombi in the left atrium and left atrial appendage by transesophageal echocardiography has significant diagnostic and therapeutic value. However, it requires high method accuracy in routine evaluation. In order to record the percentage of false positive findings, a reevaluation was performed by two experienced examiners using the video recordings of 51 patients, in whom a thrombus has been diagnosed during the routine evaluation.

Objective: We tested whether immunohistochemical detection of oestrogen and progesterone receptor (ER, PR), the oestrogen-dependent protein pS2, the growth hormone receptors p 185neu and EGF-R, the tumour suppressor protein p53, the tissue proteases Cathepsin D and Urokinase, and the proliferation marker PCNA are of prognostic relevance in breast cancer patients.

Methods: Expression of the proteins listed above was evaluated in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded sections of 311 primary breast cancer specimens using modified Avidin-Biotin-Complex methods. Results were correlated to clinical and morphological parameters (age, menopausal status, nodal status, tumour size, tumour grade), and clinical course of disease (complete follow-up in 301 women, median observation time 62 months) utilising univariate and multivariate statistical analyses.

The effect of zinc ions on carbohydrate metabolism and intracellular Zn2+ was studied in hepatocytes from fed rats. The addition of ZnCl2 to the medium led to an almost 3-fold increase in lactate production and an increase in net glucose production of about 50%. Half-maximal rates occurred at about 40 microM ZnCl2.

[The 16th October 1846 and its outcome].

Anaesthesiol Reanim

April 1997

Universittsklinik für Anaesthesiologie und Intensivtherapie, Medizinischen Fakultät der Otto-von-Guericke-Universitt Magdeburg.

Morton's first successful public demonstration of ether anaesthesia for a surgical operation, performed on October 16, 1846 in Boston/Massachusetts, had far-reaching consequences. The first effect was the surprisingly fast propagation of the new way of preventing pain to nearly all parts of the globe. Anaesthesia made it possible to perform operations previously considered impossible under conditions now acceptable for the patient.

Proliferation parameters for pituitary adenomas.

Acta Neurochir Suppl

November 1996

Neurochirurgische Klinik, Universitt Erlangen-Nürnberg, Federal Republic of Germany.

In this review, the value of assessing proliferation parameters in surgically resected pituitary tumour tissue is analyzed. Histological examination of basal dura biopsies identifies invasive growth even when intraoperatively not apparent to the surgeon. Determination of DNA-polymerase activity, Ki-67 immunohistochemistry and DNA-flow-cytometry shows a clear difference in the proliferative potential of enclosed and invasive pituitary adenomas.

In psycho-oncology, the concept of a "cancer-prone personality" has gained some attention. This notion means that persons who try to stay pseudo-normal in spite of severe life stress, suppress negative emotions, particularly anger, and sacrifice themselves for other people without uttering any personal demands, are at a high risk to develop cancer. However, it has been demonstrated by previous research that features of the cancer-prone personality could only be found if the ill person was convinced to suffer from cancer, irrespective of what the factual diagnosis was.

Identity dissociation signifies: there seem to exist two identities in one personality that take turns-apparently without knowing about each other. Descriptions of this rare state are often spectacular. As scientifically proven they depend on culturally specific conditions and iatrogeneous influences.

According to German law, delinquents who are considered either not fully responsible or not responsible at all for their actions because of a mental disorder receive no punishment or a lesser degree of punishment in criminal trials. They may, however, be sentenced to psychiatric treatment either in a psychiatric hospital or in an addiction centre, if the risk of them committing such offenses in the future is considered to be high. This article reviews the current situation of mentally ill offenders in hospitals and explores possible developments in forensic psychiatry.
