Weight-inducing psychotropic treatments are risk factors for age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, which are associated with both inflammation and telomere length shortening. With a longitudinal design, the present study evaluates telomere length trajectories after 1 year of weight-inducing psychotropic medication, accounting for weight changes and the inflammatory biomarker high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (CRP). Among 200 patients, an overall median telomere shortening of -41.

The unique medical and socio-economic situation in each country affected by TB creates different epidemiological contexts, thus providing exploitable loopholes for the spread of the disease. Country-specific factors such as comorbidities, health insurance, social stigma or the rigidity of the health system complicate the management of TB and the overall outcome of each patient. First-line TB drugs are administered in a standardized manner, regardless of patient characteristics other than weight.

The dearth of approved products to treat oral lichen planus (OLP) compels off-label use of dermatological corticosteroid formulations not optimized for indications in the oral cavity. The aims of this study were to develop aqueous micelle based formulations of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) and fluocinonide (FLU), using D-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate, and to investigate corticosteroid delivery to the epithelium-lamina propria junction region - the anatomical target for OLP treatment - in comparison to that from marketed products. Total mucosal deposition of TA after application of Kenacort® A Orabase® (0.

Background: The radiation exposure of nuclear medicine personnel, especially concerning extremity doses, has been a significant focus over the past two decades. This study addresses the evolving practice of NM, particularly with the rise of radionuclide therapy and theranostic procedures, which involve a variety of radionuclides such as Ga, Lu, and I. Traditional studies have concentrated on common radioisotopes like Tc, F, and Y, but there is limited data on these radionuclides, which are more and more frequently used.

Thanks to impressive advances in the field of oncology over the last 30 years, there has been a significant rise in cancer survivors. Nowadays, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in this patient population. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major problem due to shared risk factors, an aging population and in many cases induced and/or accelerated atherosclerosis by antitumoral treatment during and even decades after the end of cancer therapy.

How does plant closure affect the employment and well-being of displaced workers? This article presents the results of two surveys of workers at five manufacturing plants two and 11 years after mass layoffs. After two years, two-thirds of displaced workers had been re-employed, one in five workers was still unemployed, and one in 10 workers had retired. A decade after the plant closures, unemployment had fallen below 5%.

Background: Transfer to a post-acute care facility or hospital readmission after total joint arthroplasty represent additional costs and increased surgical and health care resource utilization. Accurate prediction of post-acute care factors could help providers to plan the patient's discharge destination and have a positive impact on postoperative outcomes and readmission rates.
Objective: To develop a risk assessment model to predict discharge care after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Dexamethasone (DEX) is currently the treatment of choice for patients with oxygen-dependent COVID-19. It has been observed, primarily in vitro, that dexamethasone induces the expression of CYP3A and the ABCB1 gene, which encodes P-glycoprotein (P-gp). This has raised concerns about potential interactions between DEX and substrates of CYP3A and P-gp, such as direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC).

Aims/hypothesis: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects 14% of all pregnancies worldwide and is associated with cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to exploit high-resolution wearable device time-series data to create a fine-grained physiological characterisation of the postpartum GDM state in free-living conditions, including clinical variables, daily glucose dynamics, food and drink consumption, physical activity, sleep patterns and heart rate.
Methods: In a prospective observational study, we employed continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), a smartphone food diary, triaxial accelerometers and heart rate and heart rate variability monitors over a 2 week period to compare women who had GDM in the previous pregnancy (GDM group) and women who had a pregnancy with normal glucose metabolism (non-GDM group) at 1-2 months after delivery (baseline) and 6 months later (follow-up).

Microtubules, composed of conserved α/β-tubulin dimers, undergo complex post-translational modifications (PTMs) that fine-tune their properties and interactions with other proteins. Cilia exhibit several tubulin PTMs, such as polyglutamylation, polyglycylation, detyrosination, and acetylation, with functions that are not fully understood. Mutations in AGBL5, which encodes the deglutamylating enzyme CCP5, have been linked to retinitis pigmentosa, suggesting that altered polyglutamylation may cause photoreceptor cell degeneration, though the underlying mechanisms are unclear.

When comparing the particle emissivity for different materials and/or mechanical activities, a serious methodological issue emerges due to the dynamic nature of solid aerosols. Particle size distribution and concentration depend on initial particle emission that constantly evolves due to aerodynamic collisions. In this context, we propose a methodological approach and an experimental setup that enables to assess the release of fine/ultra-fine particles maintaining a steady-state inhalable mass concentration, here chosen at the Swiss occupational exposure level value for biopersistent granular particles (OEL: 10 mg/m3) in a controlled ventilation chamber.

Background: The liver is a key metabolic organ, acting as a hub to metabolically connect various tissues. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder whereby patients have an increased susceptibility to developing dyslipidaemia and liver steatosis. It remains unknown whether fatty liver is due to an intrinsic or extrinsic impact of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein depletion.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but their impressive efficacy is seen in just a fraction of patients. One key mechanism of immunotherapy resistance is the paucity of dendritic cells (DCs) in liver malignancies. Here, we tested combination blockade of programmed death receptor 1 (PD1) and CXCR4, a receptor for CXCL12, a pleiotropic factor that mediates immunosuppression in tumors.

Aging involves complex processes that impact the structure, function, and metabolism of the human brain. Declines in both structural and functional integrity along with reduced local inhibitory tone in the motor areas, as indicated by reduced γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, are often associated with compromised motor performance in elderly adults. Using multimodal neuroimaging techniques including magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI as well as transcranial magnetic stimulation to assess short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI), this study explores whether these age-related changes can be mitigated by motor learning.
