Background: Leptospirosis is a water-related zoonotic disease. The disease is primarily transmitted from animals to humans through pathogenic bacteria in contaminated water and soil. Rivers have a critical role in transmissions, while co-infection potentials with other waterborne bacteria might increase the severity and death risk of the disease.

Sepiolite is a silicate mineral that improves the fire properties in solid wood when mixed with a water-based coating. The present study was carried out to investigate and evaluate the effects of sepiolite addition to acrylic-latex paint on the pull-off adhesion strength, as an important characteristic of paints and finishes used in the modern furniture industry and historical furniture as well for preservation and restoration of heritage objects. Sepiolite was added at the rate of 10%, and brushed onto plain-sawn beech (Fagus orientalis L.

The ever-increasing global population necessitates a secure and ample energy supply, the majority of which is derived from fossil fuels. However, due to the immense energy demand, the exponential depletion of these non-renewable energy sources is both unavoidable and inevitable in the approaching century. Therefore, exploring the use of polymer electrolytes as alternatives in proton-conducting batteries opens an intriguing research field, as demonstrated by the growing number of publications on the subject.

Article Synopsis
  • Nitrocellulose (NC) is derived from lignocellulose materials like cotton and wood pulp and is used in various applications, including biodegradable plastics and propellants, with this study specifically focusing on its production from recycled egg carton pulp.
  • Various nitration durations (40, 50, and 60 minutes) and KOH concentrations (0.6 M, 1.0 M, and 1.5 M) were tested to determine their effects on NC properties, revealing that 50 minutes led to the highest nitrogen content and desirable structural characteristics.
  • The addition of 50-minute nitrated NC as an accelerant in rice husk charcoal briquettes increased the calorific value significantly, demonstrating its potential for improving

Magnetorheological elastomer (MRE), which is capable of exhibiting magnetostriction in the presence of a magnetic field, has a great potential to be used for the development of sensor devices. Unfortunately, to date, many works focused on studying low modulus of MRE (less than 100 kPa) which can hamper their potential application in sensors due to short lifespan and low durability. Thus, in this work, MRE with storage modulus above 300 kPa is to be developed to enhance magnetostriction magnitude and reaction force (normal force).

Background: Adequate health literacy is necessary for individuals as it enables them to readily acquire information, process it, and apply it to health-related decisions. Various factors including geographical area will determine the disparity in health literacy status. Communities living in protected areas have limited health literacy and health status owing to a lack of access to infrastructure and medical facilities.

Pull-off strength is an important property of solid wood, influencing the quality of paints and finishes in the modern furniture industry, as well as in historical furniture and for preservation and restoration of heritage objects. The thermal modification and heat treatment of solid wood have been the most used commercial wood modification techniques over the past decades globally. The effects of heat treatment at two mild temperatures (145 and 185 °C) on the pull-off strength of three common solid wood species, i.

Strain localization is a significant issue that poses interesting research challenges in viscoelastic materials because it is difficult to accurately predict the damage evolution behavior. Over time, the damage mechanism in the amorphous structure of viscoelastic materials leads to subsequent localization into a shear band, gradually jeopardizing the materials' elastic sustainability. The primary goal of this study is to further understand the morphological effects and the role of shear bands in viscoelastic materials precipitated by strain localization.

The prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency is significant even in tropical countries such as Malaysia. Sun exposure is the primary source of vitamin D for most people due to limited intakes of food containing vitamin D and supplements. This study explored the perception of barriers towards sun exposure and strategies to overcome these barriers among vitamin D insufficient women workers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This study assessed knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) related to vitamin D and its relationship with vitamin D status among Malay female office workers. A total of 147 women aged between 20 and 55 years were recruited from a university in Kuala Lumpur. They answered questionnaires related to KAP on vitamin D, sun exposure, dietary vitamin D intake and physical activity.
