Isolation and characterization of a mo -reducing bacterium.

Appl Environ Microbiol

April 1993

Department of Biotechnology, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, 43400 Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

A Mo -reducing bacterium (strain 48), which grew on medium supplemented with 200 mM Mo, was isolated from stream water obtained from Chengkau, Malaysia. The chemical properties of strain 48 conform to the characteristics of Enterobacter cloacae. Under anaerobic conditions in the glucose-yeast extract medium containing phosphate ion (2.

Field isolates of herpesviruses recovered from falcon, pigeon, and psittacine birds were compared by restriction endonuclease (RE) analysis using four separate enzymes. Pigeon and falcon herpesviruses had strikingly similar DNA cleavage patterns, while DNA cleavage pattern of virus isolates from a double-yellow headed Amazon and an African grey parrot had different genomic patterns to both the pigeon and falcon herpesviruses. These findings support the field observations that pigeon herpesvirus causes a fatal herpesviral infection in the livers of pigeon-eating falcons.

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, 43400 UPM Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

A new lead(II) electrode has been constructed with poly(hydroxamic acid) (PHXA) as the active material and silicone rubber as the supporting material. The electrode gave near Nerstian response over the concentration range 4 x 10(-5)-1 x 10(-2)M lead(II). The detection limit of the electrode is approximately 4 x 10(-6)M and the electrode works well in the pH range 4.

Prevalence of malnutrition among children in an urban squatter settlement in Petaling Jaya.

Med J Malaysia

September 1992

Department of Nutrition and Community Health, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang Selangor Darul Ehsan.

In a study of mild to significant malnutrition in an urban squatter settlement, the weights for age of 297 children between birth and ten years, and the heights for age and weights for height of 197 children between two to ten years were analysed. Using NCHS standards, the overall prevalence of underweight was found to be 18.9%, stunting 15.

This study used path analysis to assess the chances of survival of babies in a neonatal intensive care unit in Lansing, Michigan, USA. Two paths to neonatal survival were identified and the variables accounted for 20% of the variance in gestational age. The first path showed that prior infant losses were negatively correlated with gestational age while in the second path, gestational age showed negative relationships with pre-pregnancy weight and household job worries.

Spectroscopic examinations of purified extracts of the rumen content of sheep intoxicated by Brachiaria decumbens revealed the presence of a mixture of sapogenins, identified as 3-spirostanols. These isomeric steroid sapogenins (C27H44O3) are believed the toxic principles in causing toxicity in sheep after feeding on B. decumbens.

Superovulation and egg recovery in goats in the tropics.

Vet Rec

February 1992

Department of Veterinary Clinical Studies, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor.

The superovulatory response to gonadotrophin treatment during different months of the year was investigated in Kambing kacang goats, a tropical breed, in Malaysia. Sixty-three cycling does, fitted with progesterone impregnated intravaginal sponges for 17 days, received two days before sponge withdrawal, an intramuscular injection of either 10, 15 or 20 mg of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) or 500, 1000 or 1500 iu of equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG). The dose of FSH was divided into four decreasing daily doses and each daily dose was subdivided into two and administered at 07.

Trypsin has been immobilized by adsorption onto Amberlite XAD-7 beads. The Michaelis constant (Km) of the enzyme was increased about sevenfold following the immobilization. Its rate of penetration into the porous beads was determined by staining the beads, which had been split, with naphthol blue black.

Department of Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor.

Liver fluke disease (fascioliasis) is an important parasitic disease found worldwide affecting sheep, goats, cattle and buffalo, as well as other domestic ruminants. The common causative agents are Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica which require various species of Lymnaea, fresh water snails, as their intermediate hosts.

Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor Darul Ehsan.

Three polycentric rumen fungi, LL, LC2 and Ruminomyces elegans (C2), isolated from the rumen of cattle were grown in six culture media. LL and LC2 were morphologically similar. Their characteristics resembled those of Orpinomyces and Neocallimastix joyonii, and they grew well and produced sporangia after 3-4 d growth in all the media.

Vaccination of chickens against Newcastle disease with a food pellet vaccine.

Avian Pathol

April 1990

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

The Australian, heat-resistant, a virulent V4 strain of Newcastle disease (ND) virus was selected for further heat resistance to give a variant designated V4-UPM. V4-UPM was sprayed on to food pellets which were fed to chickens in amounts calculated to give about 10(6) EID50 per chicken. Chickens vaccinated only once by feeding developed no haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies and were not protected against challenge with a viscerotropic velogenic strain of ND virus.
