Sesquiterpenes and alkaloids from Scorodocarpus borneensis.

Phytochemistry

October 2001

Department of Chemistry, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, 43400, Serdang, Malaysia.

A new sesquiterpene, scodopin, and a mixture of three tryptamine-type alkaloids, scorodocarpines A-C, were isolated from the fruits of Scorodocarpus borneensis, together with a known hemisynthetic sesquiterpene, cadalene-beta-carboxylic acid, which was isolated from the bark. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by interpretation of spectral data, especially tandem mass spectrometry for the alkaloid mixture.

Twenty goats of about 7 months of age were divided into five groups. The goats in groups 1 and 2 were exposed once, using an intranasal spray to 2 ml of an inoculum containing 10(6) colony-forming units/ml of living or dead Pasteurella haemolytica A2, respectively. The goats in groups 3 and 4 were similarly exposed twice at a 2-week interval.

Coccidial infections of goats in Selangor, peninsular Malaysia.

Vet Parasitol

January 1998

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia.

Article Synopsis
  • A study on coccidial infections in goats was conducted in Selangor, Malaysia, over a year, monitoring kids on 10 farms for faecal oocyst counts from birth to one year old.
  • Eimeria oocysts were found in 89% of samples, with nine species identified, the most common being E. arloingi, E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. christenseni, and E. alijevi.
  • Higher oocyst counts were noted in goats under four months old, primarily from non-pathogenic species, and poor hygiene conditions correlated with increased coccidial infections, although these infections did not relate to kid mortality rates.

The predominant microbial flora of a specific Malaysian food ingredient, chili bo (containing 9% ground dried chilies, 0.6% acetic acid, and 5 to 10% cornstarch, wt/vol) stored for up to 25 days at 28°C without added benzoic acid (product A) and with 7,000 ppm of added benzoic acid (product B) was examined. Aerobic plate counts for both products were initially 6.

Haruan, Channa striatus, is a snakehead fish consumed in many parts of the southeast Asian region. It is believed to promote wound healing, as well as reduce post-operative pain. In an attempt to establish the scientific basis for the alleged pain-relieving benefits of this fish, we studied the antinociceptive effects of whole fillet and mucus extracts from haruan in the mouse using the abdominal constriction and tail flick tests.

The growth of Vibrio cholerae O139 inoculated into (a mixture of coconut milk, brown sugar, and green jelly from rice flour), (prawn paste, sugar, soy sauce, spices, garlic, and peanut gravy), gravy, tofu, fried tofu, and wheat-flour noodles (all except gravy containing the natural microbial flora) was examined at four incubation temperatures (7, 15,25, and 35°C). V. cholerae O139 grew well in incubated at 25 and 35°C but not at 15°C or below.

Evaluation of five promoters for use in transformation of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.).

Plant Cell Rep

February 1997

Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, 43400 Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

The efficiency of GUS (β-Glucuronidase) gene expression in embryogenic callus and young leaflets of mature and seedling palm after microprojectile bombardment with five constructs (pEmuGN, pAHC25, pAct1-F4, pGH24 and pBARGUS) was evaluated to identify the most suitable promoter(s) to use in transformation attempts in oil palm. Expression of the GUS gene driven by theEmu, Ubi1, Act1 35S orAdh1 was assayed, both histochemically and fluorometrically, from a total of 200 plates of tissues in eight independent experiments two days after bombardment. A completely randomized experimental design was used for each experiment, and the data analysed by ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Cytotoxicity and electron microscopy of cell death induced by goniothalamin.

Planta Med

February 1997

Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia.

The cytotoxicity of goniothalamin was found to be strong towards both cancerous (HGC-27, MCF-7, PANC-1, HeLa), and non-cancerous (3T3) cell lines, especially in cases of dividing cells. Drug exposure studies indicated that the cytotoxic action of goniothalamin was time- and dose-dependent. At the ultrastructural level, goniothalamin-induced cytotoxicity revealed a necrotic mode of cell death towards MCF-7 cells.

Thirty, 4 month-old male Maim x Polled Dorset crossbred sheep were allocated into 6 groups of 5 animals each. Four groups of animals were stall-fed with basal diet of 90% palm kernel cake (PKC) and 10% grass (G) for 16 weeks. One group of the animal was slaughtered at the end of the 16 weeks feeding trial (PKC group), whilst the other three groups were further fed with either the same diet (PKC+PKC group) or fed with a new diet consisting of 30% corn and 10% fish meals (CF) and grass (60%) either with (PKC+CF+Zn group) or without (PKC+CF group) zinc supplementation (500 mg/g Zn as zinc sulfate) for another 16 weeks and were slaughtered at the end of the feeding trial, The other two groups which act as controls were fed with corn (30%) and fish meals (10%) and grass (60%), and were slaughtered at weeks 16 (CF group) and 32 (CF+CF group) of the trial.

Effect of mixed infection of Mycoplasma gallinarum and Newcastle disease virus (F strain) on the tracheal epithelium of village chickens.

Res Vet Sci

September 1996

Department of Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

The effects of a mixed infection of Mycoplasma gallinarum and Newcastle disease virus (F strain) on the tracheal epithelium of village chickens were investigated and observed by scanning electron microscopy. Day-old village chicks were vaccinated intranasally with F strain Newcastle disease virus and inoculated intratracheally on the same day with 10(8) colony forming units of M gallinarum. In another study the chicks were vaccinated and then infected with M gallinarum seven days later.

Preliminary analysis of the short-term impact of a running headlights intervention revealed that there has been a significant drop in conspicuity-related motorcycle accidents in the pilot areas, Seremban and Shah Alam, Malaysia. This paper attempts to look in more detail at conspicuity-related accidents involving motorcycles. The aim of the analysis was to establish a statistical model to describe the relationship between the frequency of conspicuity-related motorcycle accidents and a range of explanatory variables so that new insights can be obtained into the effects of introducing a running headlight campaign and regulation.

A total of 46 Lactobacillus isolates obtained from chicken intestine were assessed on their ability to adhere to the chicken ileal epithelial cell (IEC) in vitro. Twelve out of the 46 isolates showed moderate to good ability to adhere to the IEC. Temperature (between 4 degrees C and 42 degrees C) did not affect attachment.

Of the twenty microorganisms screened for metabolism of goniothalamin only Streptomyces aurofaciens ATCC 10762 and Nocardia species NRRL 5646 produced two metabolites, 3,4-dihydrogoniothalamin and 3,4,7,8 tetrahydrogoniothalamin. The identity of the isolated metabolites were established using TLC, HPLC, MS, IR, and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the substrate had been transformed into two unknown metabolites by Aspergillus niger ATCC 11394 and Septomyxa affinis ATCC 6737 in low yield.
