TWEAK and TNFɑ Pro-inflammatory Soluble Cytokines and their Specific Autoantibodies Secretion in Multiple Sclerosis Patients.

Inflammation

December 2024

Department of Neurology, CRC Sclérose en Plaques, CHU Montpellier, Univ Montpellier, INSERM, Montpellier, France.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex, chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, where immune dysregulation plays a critical role. We sought to explore the modulation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFɑ) and TNF-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK), along with their respective autoantibodies, TNAb and TWAb, and to decipher potential associations between these and clinical characteristics which could assist personalized therapy in MS. We also assessed the complementarity to leading candidate biomarkers in MS patient monitoring, namely, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and neurofilament light chain (NfL).

The benefits of screening for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy remain a topic of debate. To date, no randomized trial has compared the impact of screening versus routine management on the prevention of severe sequelae in newborns. Furthermore, it is unclear what actions can be taken in case of a positive screening given that there is limited evidence of effective interventions as no treatments showed significant effect on the frequency of congenital cytomegalovirus infections and, as additional challenge, the window for effective treatment initiation after maternal infection is narrow, estimated to be as short as five weeks.

Accurate genome inheritance during cell division relies on a complex chromosome segregation mechanism. This process occurs once all the kinetochores of sister chromatids are attached to microtubules emanating from the opposite poles of the mitotic spindle. To control the precision of this mechanism, the Chromosome Passenger Complex (CPC) actively identifies and corrects improper microtubule attachments.

The study of aquatic animal movements is a rapidly growing field of research, with tracking methodology ever developing and refining. Acoustic telemetry is arguably the most popular method used to study the movements of fish. Despite this method being able to elucidate many aspects of movement behavior, including residency, home range, and migration, among others, one aspect that remains challenging is the study and definition of connectivity, particularly within marine seascapes.

Article Synopsis
  • Caring for newborns limits mammalian females' ability to gather resources, especially during the energy-demanding early lactation period.
  • Different ungulates have developed various strategies for protecting their vulnerable newborns, from staying hidden to being mobile, which can influence their mothers' movement patterns.
  • A study of 54 populations of 23 ungulate species shows that maternal movements are affected by the resource availability and type of neonatal strategy, highlighting the importance of these tactics in understanding how species adapt to environmental changes.

Article Synopsis
  • Tumor-infiltrating memory T cell subpopulations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can be categorized based on various surface markers, with CD103 often used but not universally expressed.
  • In studies, multiparametric cytometry and multiplex immunofluorescence techniques were applied to analyze T-cell behavior in vaccinated mice and human NSCLC patients, revealing distinct subpopulations and their impact on clinical outcomes.
  • Results showed that a specific double-positive T cell subset (CD103+CD49a+) was more functional than a single-positive subset (CD49a+), with implications for predicting responses to immunotherapy, particularly relating to PD-1 treatment.

Service de Radiologie, Centre Hospitalier Lyon-Sud, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Pierre-Bénite, France; Creatis LRMN, CNRS UMR 5220, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, INSERM U630, Lyon, France.

Background: Currently, there are no available recommendations or guidelines on how to perform MRI monitoring in the management of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). The issue is to determine a valuable MRI monitoring protocol to be applied in the management of NMOSD and MOGAD, as previously proposed for the monitoring of multiple sclerosis.

Objectives: The objectives of this work are to establish proposals for a standardized and feasible MRI acquisition protocol, and to propose control time points for systematic MRI monitoring in the management of NMOSD and MOGAD.

How fast are viruses spreading in the wild?

PLoS Biol

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation, Rega Institute, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Genomic data collected from viral outbreaks can be exploited to reconstruct the dispersal history of viral lineages in a two-dimensional space using continuous phylogeographic inference. These spatially explicit reconstructions can subsequently be used to estimate dispersal metrics that can be informative of the dispersal dynamics and the capacity to spread among hosts. Heterogeneous sampling efforts of genomic sequences can however impact the accuracy of phylogeographic dispersal metrics.

During oncogene-induced senescence there are striking changes in the organisation of heterochromatin in the nucleus. This is accompanied by activation of a pro-inflammatory gene expression programme - the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) - driven by transcription factors such as NF-κB. The relationship between heterochromatin re-organisation and the SASP has been unclear.

From seedlings to adults: Linking survival and leaf functional traits over ontogeny.

Ecology

January 2025

AMAP (Botanique et Modélisation de l'Architecture des Plantes et des Végétations), Université de Montpellier, CIRAD, CNRS, INRAE, IRD, Montpellier, France.

As long-lived tropical trees grow into the multi-layered canopy and face different environmental conditions, the relationships between leaf traits and whole-plant survival can vary over ontogeny. We tested the strength and direction of the relationships between leaf traits and long-term survival data across life stages for woody species from a subtropical forest in Puerto Rico. Trait-survival relationships were largely consistent across ontogeny with conservative traits leading to higher survival rates.

Characterizing the Slow Dynamics of the Swap Monte Carlo Algorithm.

J Phys Chem B

December 2024

Laboratoire Charles Coulomb (L2C), Université de Montpellier, CNRS, 34095 Montpellier, France.

The swap Monte Carlo algorithm introduces nonphysical dynamic rules to accelerate the exploration of the configuration space of supercooled liquids. Its success raises deep questions regarding the nature and physical origin of the slow dynamics of dense liquids and how it is affected by swap moves. We provide a detailed analysis of the slow dynamics generated by the swap Monte Carlo algorithm at very low temperatures in two glass-forming models.
