Dyes are one of the common contaminants in industrial wastewater. Adsorption is the most widely method which used to treat dye-contaminated water due to their easy use, cost-effectiveness, and their efficiency was high. The aim of this study is the investigating of the utilization of the activated carbon which prepared from Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) as a low cost adsorbent for removing of cationic Methylene Blue dye (MB)from wastewater.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between exercise and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in individuals with overweight and obesity, amid concerns over the cognitive impacts of rising obesity rates.
  • A systematic review of 13 studies found no significant effect of exercise on resting BDNF levels, with most studies demonstrating a low risk of bias but showing consistent results across different participant ages and control conditions.
  • The authors recommend conducting more rigorous and larger-scale studies to better understand the role of BDNF in cognitive function related to obesity.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiometabolic diseases are linked to low-grade inflammation that starts early in life and can last into old age, providing a chance for early detection and lifestyle changes.
  • Current biomarker tests for early-stage inflammation are inconsistent, prompting advancements in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for more reliable metabolic profiling.
  • H-NMR technology can detect stable signals related to inflammation, such as GlycA and GlycB, which may outperform traditional inflammatory markers and have potential for predicting health conditions like prediabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Background: Evidence shows that negative symptoms of schizophrenia and underlying dysfunctional cognition are related to persistently low functioning and quality of life. However, despite the abundance of existing recovery programs for people with schizophrenia, few have examined whether and how the widely-adopted hope-motivation recovery pathway and the deficit-oriented cognitive pathway might converge to influence functioning and quality of life.

Methods: A cross-sectional, quantative survey recruited a convenient sample of adult outpatients with DSM-5 schizophrenia spectrum disorders and low social functioning (n = 124).

Aims: Novel cancer therapies leading to increased survivorship of cancer patients have been negated by a concomitant rise in cancer therapies-related cardiovascular toxicities. Sunitinib, a first line multi-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has been reported to cause vascular dysfunction although the initiating mechanisms contributing to this side effect remain unknown. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging regulators of biological processes in endothelial cells (ECs); however, their roles in cancer therapies-related vascular toxicities remain underexplored.

Mental object rotation based on two-dimensional visual representations.

Curr Biol

November 2022

Department of Experimental Psychology, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Otto-Behaghel-Strasse 10 F, D-35394 Giessen, Germany; Centre for Mind, Brain and Behaviour (CMBB), University of Marburg and Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany.

The discovery of mental rotation was one of the most significant landmarks in experimental psychology, leading to the ongoing assumption that to visually compare objects from different three-dimensional viewpoints, we use explicit internal simulations of object rotations, to 'mentally adjust' one object until it matches the other. These rotations are thought to be performed on three-dimensional representations of the object, by literal analogy to physical rotations. In particular, it is thought that an imagined object is continuously adjusted at a constant three-dimensional angular rotation rate from its initial orientation to the final orientation through all intervening viewpoints.

Few investigations have assessed the impact of short-term ambient temperature change on pneumonia risk. We aimed to study the relation of temperature variability (TV) with daily hospitalizations for pneumonia in China. We conducted a time-series study in 184 major cities by extracting daily hospital data between 2014 and 2017 from a medical insurance claims database of 0.

This paper threw some light on the behavior of Sodium N,N-Dimethyldithiocarbamate as an electrolyte. The effect of solvents on the conductance of this salt would be discussed via measurements of Λ, a and KA, since it can be assumed that the different solvents have a little chance to impose great variations on the solvation processes. The conductance method was chosen as a tool to illustrate the electrolyte-solvent interactions.

A Rapid, Simple, Inexpensive, and Mobile Colorimetric Assay COVID-19-LAMP for Mass On-Site Screening of COVID-19.

Int J Mol Sci

July 2020

Department of Microbiology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong 19/F, Block T, Queen Mary Hospital, 102 Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong.

To control the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent its resurgence in areas preparing for a return of economic activities, a method for a rapid, simple, and inexpensive point-of-care diagnosis and mass screening is urgently needed. We developed and evaluated a one-step colorimetric reverse-transcriptional loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay (COVID-19-LAMP) for detection of SARS-CoV-2, using SARS-CoV-2 isolate and respiratory samples from patients with COVID-19 ( = 223) and other respiratory virus infections ( = 143). The assay involves simple equipment and techniques and low cost, without the need for expensive qPCR machines, and the result, indicated by color change, is easily interpreted by naked eyes.

Cuprous halides, characterized by a direct wide band-gap and a good lattice matching with Si, is an intrinsic p-type I-VII compound semiconductor. It shows remarkable optoelectronic properties, including a large exciton binding energy at room temperature and a very small piezoelectric coefficient. The major obstacle to its application is the difficulty in growing a single-crystal epitaxial film of cuprous halides.

Explaining Health Disparities between Heterosexual and LGB Adolescents by Integrating the Minority Stress and Psychological Mediation Frameworks: Findings from the TRAILS Study.

J Youth Adolesc

September 2020

Department of Sociology/Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS), University of Groningen, Grote Rozenstraat 31, 9712 TG, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents experience elevated levels of internalizing problems and use more substances than heterosexual adolescents. The minority stress and psychological mediation framework are complementary theoretical frameworks that were developed to explain these disparities. However, limited empirical research has integrated both frameworks to study health disparities between heterosexual and LGB adolescents.
