Mid-water column turbulence has been shown to cause elevated vertical nutrient flux at the shelf edge in the northeastern North Sea. Here, we demonstrate that phytoplankton communities in this region tend to be dominated by larger cells (estimated from percentage of chlorophyll captured on a 10 μm filter) than beyond the shelf edge. F/F (PSII electron transport capacity) corrected for photoinhibition in the surface layer correlated in this study with the percentage of chlorophyll captured on a 10 µm filter (assumed to be large cells), suggesting that the phytoplankton community was responding to increased nutrients in the euphotic zone by increasing photosynthetic efficiency and altering community composition.

Our understanding of how low oxygen (O2) conditions arise in plant tissues and how they shape specific responses has seen major advancement in recent years. Important drivers have been (1) the discovery of the molecular machinery that underpins plant O2 sensing; and (2) a growing set of dedicated tools to define experimental conditions and assess plant responses with increasing accuracy and resolution. While some of those tools, such as the Clark-type O2 electrode, were established decades ago, recent customization has set entirely new standards and enabled novel research avenues in plant hypoxia research.

Onychophora are cryptic, soil-dwelling invertebrates known for their biogeographic affinities, diversity of reproductive modes, close phylogenetic relationship to arthropods, and peculiar prey capture mechanism. The 216 valid species of Onychophora are grouped into two families - Peripatopsidae and Peripatidae - and apart from a few relationships among major lineages within these two families, a stable phylogenetic backbone for the phylum has yet to be resolved. This has hindered our understanding of onychophoran biogeographic patterns, evolutionary history, and systematics.

Hemichordata has always played a central role in evolutionary studies of Chordata due to their close phylogenetic affinity and shared morphological characteristics. Hemichordates had no meiofaunal representatives until the surprising discovery of a microscopic, paedomorphic enteropneust Meioglossus psammophilus (Harrimaniidae, Hemichordata) from the Caribbean in 2012. No additional species have been described since, questioning the broader distribution and significance of this genus.

In recent years, research on flooding stress and hypoxic responses in plants has gathered increasing attention due to climate change and the important role of O2 in metabolism and signalling. This Collection of Functional Plant Biology on 'Flooding stress and responses to hypoxia in plants' presents key contributions aimed at progressing our current understanding on how plants respond to low-O2 conditions, flooding stress and a combination of stresses commonly found in flooded areas. The Collection emphasises the characterisation of diverse plant responses across different developmental stages, from seed germination to fully developed plants, and under different water stress conditions ranging from waterlogging to complete submergence, or simply low-O2 conditions resulting from limited O2 diffusivity in bulky tissues.

With recent progress in active research on flooding and hypoxia/anoxia tolerance in native and agricultural crop plants, vast knowledge has been gained on both individual tolerance mechanisms and the general mechanisms of flooding tolerance in plants. Research on carbohydrate consumption, ethanolic and lactic acid fermentation, and their regulation under stress conditions has been accompanied by investigations on aerenchyma development and the emergence of the radial oxygen loss barrier in some plant species under flooded conditions. The discovery of the oxygen-sensing mechanism in plants and unravelling the intricacies of this mechanism have boosted this very international research effort.

Rice production worldwide represents a major anthropogenic source of greenhouse gas emissions.
