Here, a phenomenon of efficient oxygen exchange between a silicon surface and a thin layer of tin dioxide during chemical vapor deposition is presented, which leads to a unique Sn:SiO layer. Under thermodynamic conditions in the temperature range of 725-735 °C, the formation of nanostructures with volcano-like shapes in "active" and "dormant" states are observed. Extensive characterization techniques, such as electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, synchrotron radiation-based X-ray photoelectron, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy, are applied to study the formation.

First principles of hydrazine electrooxidation at oxide-free and oxide-based palladium electrodes in complex media.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

April 2023

Institute of Biochemistry, Centre for Human and Molecular Biology (ZHMB), Saarland University, 66123 Saarbrücken, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how different types of palladium (Pd)-modified electrodes affect the electroanalytical detection of hydrazine in various fermentation media, focusing on their effectiveness in a significant concentration range.
  • The research finds that the efficiency of hydrazine detection is not influenced by factors like medium composition, oxygen presence, or electrode structure; instead, it mainly relies on the purity of the electrode surface from palladium oxides.
  • Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of hydrazine adsorption behavior on both oxide-free and oxide-based Pd-electrodes, providing insights for improving future nanoparticle-based electrodes for better performance in complex environments.

The composition and atomic and electronic structure of a silicon nanowire (SiNW) array coated with tin oxide are studied at the spectromicroscopic level. SiNWs are covered from top to down with a wide bandgap tin oxide layer using a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique. Results obtained via scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that tin-oxide nanocrystals, 20 nm in size, form a continuous and highly developed surface with a complex phase composition responsible for the observed electronic structure transformation.

In our paper, we discuss the results of a comprehensive structural-spectroscopic and microscopic analysis of non-stoichiometric nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (CHAp) with low carbonate anion content and biomimetic hybrid nanomaterials produced on its basis. It was shown that hydroxyapatite nanocrystals synthesized by chemical precipitation and biogenic calcium source mimic the properties of biogenic apatite and also have a morphological organization of "core-shell" type. The "core" of the CHAp nanocrystal is characterized by an overabundance of calcium Ca/P~1.

Current-Voltage Characteristics of Membranes with Different Cation-Exchanger Content in Mineral Salt-Neutral Amino Acid Solutions under Electrodialysis.

Membranes (Basel)

November 2022

Department of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and High Technologies, Kuban State University, ul. Stavropolskaya 149, 350040 Krasnodar, Russia.

Article Synopsis
  • * Key findings include the discovery that increasing resin content reduces the length of the limiting current plateau and the resistances in their current-voltage curves (CVCs) when using sodium chloride solutions.
  • * A unique aspect of the research is the identification of two limiting currents in CVCs when mixed with phenylalanine, suggesting that the amino acid participates in additional chemical reactions which generate H/OH ions at the membrane interface, a phenomenon not previously observed in similar systems.

modulation of enzyme activity heterogeneous catalysis utilizing solid electroplated cofactors.

Comput Struct Biotechnol J

July 2022

Institute of Biochemistry, Saarland University, 66123, Saarbrücken, Campus B 2.2, Germany.

During product isolation the received bioreceptors often do not exhibit a sufficient biochemical activity due to multistep dissociation and loss of cofactors. However, for bioelectrochemical applications the presence of cofactors is necessary for a successful oxidative or reductive conversion of the substrates to the products. Herein, we show how the immobilization of the required electroplated cofactors in a design of amperometric electrodes can assist the activity of apo-enzymes.

Methylene blue, a phenothiazine dye, that is widely used in medicine and is under clinical trials as an agent for treatment of Alzheimer's disease. One of the factors of the unique therapeutic effect of methylene blue is its redox properties, allowing implementation of alternative electron transport: the dye accepts electrons from reducing equivalents in mitochondria and transfer them to other components of the respiratory chain or molecular oxygen. Azure I, an -dimethylated metabolite of methylene blue, is potentially a more effective compound than methylene blue, but its ability for alternative electron transport has not been studied yet.

The results of complex studies of structural-phase transformations and magneto-optical properties of nanocomposites (CoFeZr) (MgF) depending on the metal alloy content in the dielectric matrix are presented. Nanocomposites were deposited by ion-beam sputtering onto glass and glass-ceramic substrate. By studying the spectral and field dependences of the transversal Kerr effect (TKE), it was found that the transition of nanocomposites from superparamagnetic to the ferromagnetic state occurs in the region of ~30 at%, that corresponds to the onset the formation of ferromagnetic nanocrystals CoFeZr with hexagonal syngony in amorphous dielectric matrix of MgF.

Competition between diffusion and electroconvection at an ion-selective surface in intensive current regimes.

Adv Colloid Interface Sci

September 2016

Institut Européen des Membranes, UMR 5635, Université Montpellier, ENSCM, CNRS, CC047, 34095 Montpellier Cedex 5, France.

Considering diffusion near a solid surface and simplifying the shape of concentration profile in diffusion-dominated layer allowed Nernst and Brunner to propose their famous equation for calculating the solute diffusion flux. Intensive (overlimiting) currents generate electroconvection (EC), which is a recently discovered interfacial phenomenon produced by the action of an external electric field on the electric space charge formed near an ion-selective interface. EC microscale vortices effectively mix the depleted solution layer that allows the reduction of diffusion transport limitations.
