A novel method for synthesizing 1,2,4-triazole- and tetrazole-containing 4-thiopyrano[2,3-]quinolines using a new combination of the thio-Michael and aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman reactions was developed. Target compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicities and antiviral activities against influenza A/Puerto Rico/8/34 virus in MDCK cells. The compounds showed low toxicity and some exhibited moderate antiviral activity.

Urosporid eugregarines (Apicomplexa: Urosporidae) are unicellular eukaryotic parasites inhabiting the coelom or the intestine of marine invertebrates such as annelids, molluscs, nemerteans, and echinoderms. Despite the availability of published morphological and phylogenetical analyses of coelomic gregarines, their long-term survival in the host body cavity and dispersal routes into the marine environment remain unclear. Here, we focus on Urospora gametocysts and oocysts with sporozoites, which were found viable inside the so-called brown bodies floating in the body cavity of the polychaete Travisia forbesii.

New developments in the field of Lewis acidity are highlighted, with the focus of novel Lewis acids and Lewis superacids of group 2, 13, 14, and 15 elements. Several important basics, illustrated by modern examples (classification of Donor-Acceptor (DA) complexes, amphoteric nature of any compound in terms of DA interactions, reorganization energies of main group Lewis acids and the role of the energies of frontier orbitals) are presented and discussed. It is emphasized that the Lewis acidity phenomena are general and play vital role in different areas of chemistry: from weak "atomophilic" interactions to the complexes of Lewis superacids.

Structures and stability of mixed group 13-14-15 element hydrides PBEH (E = C, Si, Ge), their oligomers, and complexes with Lewis acids and Lewis base are computationally studied at the B3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory. Unsubstituted chain hydrides are unstable and are expected to form cyclic oligomers. Cyclization can be prevented by the donor-acceptor complex formation.

Chemically synthesized carbon dots (CDs) have attracted a lot of attention as an eco-friendly and cost-efficient light-emitting material, and functionalization of CD surfaces with additives of different natures is a useful way to control their properties. In this study, we show how a post-synthetic treatment of CDs with citric acid, benzoic acid, urea and -phenylenediamine changes their chemical composition and optical properties. In particular, it results in the formation of carboxyl/imide/carbonyl groups at the CD surface, leading to the appearance of additional blue (or for CDs treated with phenylenediamine, blue and green) emissive optical centers on top of the remaining emission from the original CDs.

In the vast majority of Animalia genomes, the 5S rRNA gene repeats are located on chromosomes outside of the 45S rDNA arrays of the nucleolar organiser (NOR). We analysed the genomic databases available and found that a 5S rDNA sequence is inserted into the intergenic spacer (IGS) between the 45S rDNA repeats in ten species of the family Nototheniidae (Perciformes, Actinopterigii). We call this sequence the NOR-5S rRNA gene.

The formation of novel cationic mixed main group compounds is reported revealing a chain composed of different elements of group 13, 14, and 15. Reactions of different pnictogenylboranes REBH·NMe (E = P, R = Ph, H; E = As, R = Ph, H) with the NHC-stabilized compound IDipp·GeHBHOTf (1) (IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazole-2-ylidene) were carried out, yielding the novel cationic, mixed group 13/14/15 compounds [IDipp·GeHBHERBH·NMe] (2a E = P; R = Ph; 2b E = As; R = Ph; 3a E = P; R = H; 3b E = As; R = H) by the nucleophilic substitution of the triflate (OTf) group. The products were analysed by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry and for 2a and 2b also by X-ray structure analysis.

CLE (CLAVATA3/ENDOSPERM SURROUNDING REGION-related) peptides are systemic regulators of legume-rhizobium symbiosis that negatively control the number of nitrogen-fixing nodules. CLE peptides are produced in the root in response to rhizobia inoculation and/or nitrate treatment and are transported to the shoot where they are recognized by the CLV1-like (CLAVATA1-like) receptor kinase. As a result, a shoot-derived signaling pathway is activated that inhibits subsequent nodule development in the root.

Structural features and reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) formed by pyramidal group 13 Lewis acids based on 9-bora and 9-alatriptycene and bulky phosphines P Bu, PPh, and PCy are considered at the M06-2X/def2-TZVP level of theory. Classic FLP is formed only in the B(CMe)CH/P Bu system, while both FLP and donor-acceptor (DA) complex are observed in the B(CF)CF/P Bu system. Formation of DA complexes was observed in other systems; the B(CH)CH·P Bu complex features an elongated DA bond and can be considered a "latent" FLP.

The effects of prenatal hypoxia on neurodevelopment are predominantly associated with impaired maternal glucocorticoid stimulation of the fetus, which is "imprinted" in altered sensitivity of glucocorticoid reception in brain structures of offspring and can affect brain plasticity during lifespan. This study aimed to investigate response of the brain glucocorticoid system to mild stress (MS) in adult rats that survived prenatal severe hypoxia (PSH) on embryonic days 14-16. In response to MS the control (but not PSH) rats demonstrate increased corticosterone levels, a decrease in exploratory activity and increased anxiety.
